5 mos old cutie in Milwaukee, WI area

Just a heads up that SE Wisconsin has a five-six month old neutered little boy coming into rescue, so please help spread the word since he's a bit of a special needs boy.

He has what looks to be moderate hip dysplasia in one hip and is clinical at the moment (limping), yet surprisingly athletic (my vet's evaluation as he hopped onto the bench and climbed all over her  ) However, anyone who adopts him will need to know that he needs to be kept lean and well muscled and could potentially require surgery some day in the future. The orthovet who evaluated his x-rays evidently did not feel surgery would benefit him at this time, nor that it would be needed down the road for certain, but it is a possibility.

Two of the local OES breeders evaluated him - he had to be held because he's still recovering from a bout of kennel cough he contracted while at the shelter - and while we're all concerned about the dysplasia issue, they both fell so deeply in love with his personality that they agreed we have to give him a chance.

He's from a backyard breeder (take note! those of you looking for puppies - who feels that since she's only breeding for "pets", they need not be screened for things like dysplasia - my comments withheld).

He has two blue eyes, black on both ears. Though he hasn't been BAER tested, my vet feels confident he can hear (though he could be unilaterally deaf). I haven't met himself, but at this point, frankly, I'm dying to. The words cute, sweet and adorable were a regular refrain from the two breeders who have.

Please help spread the word if you know of anyone who might be considering a young, sweet boy with a bit of a disability. And PM me for contact info if needed.

Thanks so much!
Kristine

He sounds like a SUCH sweetie. :D
Got a picture you can share?

The lean, muscled part is extremely important when it comes to dogs with HD.
They learn to compensate for what's lacking in the back end. Mine has
done well in the two years since we adopted her from NEOESR...

Thanks for giving this little sheepie-boy the chance he deserves :clappurple:
WOW! You did GOOD! The change in Panda is incredible in and of itself, but I love the shape all of your dogs are in! They look fantastic.

Waiting to hear if we have picture of him or if I need to grab my digital camera and have an excuse to visit him :D That is, if Sybil hasn't eaten the camera yet... :P

Kristine
Yeah... she's done real well so far. Her two year anniversary is on Sunday and we have reason to celebrate :D She'll be 4 come the end of October.

I've got a soft spot in my heart for these special kids. Some do wonderfully with a little extra care and close monitoring of exercise, weight and gait. Panda's hip care hasn't cost us much over the past 2 years (the bladder defect, now THAT'S another story  ). We had x-rays done once and keep her on Cosequin DS twice a day along with one regular strength buffered aspirin and 1000mg of Ester C but that's it so far. But as you said, you've got to be ready for more care IF it should ever be needed to allow them to live a full life with as little pain as possible. And each dog responds to his/her condition differently... x-rays don't tell the complete story on how a dog does or will do. The ortho-vet's comments were very encouraging :D

I hope someone will consider bringing this sheepie-boy into their family. Please keep us posted on how he's doing? Now go get the camera out of Sybil's mouth so you can share a picture with us
He sounds precious. I hope he finds a great home. I look forward to seeing pictures of him.

Jaci - Panda looks terrific. I am amazed by her progress. Plus, I just love her coloring -she's so pretty. :D
ok jacki i hear your heart thinking what is one more lol !!! i was thinking he would be a good match for derby they can share their aches 8O
Now pictures yet, but they're springing him tomorrow afternoon and I asked that they take some. Will share as soon as I can.

Now, as for my camera that was mysteriously missing for 8 months, Sybil refuses to talk...

Jaci - I give my guys glucosamine etc and Ester C as well. At first I was only giving it to my older ladies, but when I mentioned that to my chiropractic vet, he said why would you wait until there are arthritic changes? Use it as a preventative!

I'm thinking for this little guy it's a blessing they figured this out fairly early so he can be started on something similar ASAP. My vet also thinks part of the reason he is symptomatic right now is his lack of muscle tone. It's amazing what a few rounds with the doggie version of a Thigh Master can do for a boy.

As soon as I read the post I told my husband about him. He's just a bad as me  We're so pathetic.
Just wanted to mention I've been thinking of you and Derby... the surgery's tomorrow? I'll keep watch for updates on your beautiful boy :hearts: Give him a hug and kiss for me!

When we chose to adopt a dog with HD, I have to say this was definitely not what we expected... though this was our first experience with HD. We had immediately checked into TPO surgery but she was no longer a candidate... so we planned to have FHO surgery done right away.

This is why I posted comparison pictures... just because this little sheepie-boy has been diagnosed with this condition it does not necessarily mean surgery. Is Panda the exception? I really doubt it. She's a good example of how hips can be pretty abnormal yet the dog does not require immediate surgical intervention. But... others will need help with surgery.

I'm not a vet but I think moderate exercise/play has been a major factor in Panda's improvement along with the supplements/aspirin (a prescription med should be used if needed). If this pup had an outgoing and playful dog to live with I wonder if it might encourage him to improve his muscle tone in a fun way? Humans can play with dogs but there is nothing like the wrestling and roughhousing two dogs can do together. If someone could get this little guy swimming I bet you'd see some improvement too.

Here are a couple of interesting articles...

I'm so glad you mentioned that. We had asked our vets a year or so ago if we should put the others on glucosamine and they said no. Well... I put the entire pack on it about a month ago along with vitamin C. I'd rather prevent a problem if at all possible too!

I'll be very interested in hearing more about this little boy. I sure there's a family out there for him that will gladly adopt him despite this condition.
I can't wait to see his picture and hear updates :D
Well, pictures should be a breeze since I'll be fostering the little dude. His intended foster home fell through and Wisconsin got two more rescues in just yesterday (yikes), in addition to what we already have, so I'm taking him even if I risk him having to be rehabilitated after exposure to Sybil's crafty ways.

I'm going to see if I can get him a consult with my chiropractic vet. He's wonderful when it comes to conservative management of orthopedic issues, which will help me get him off to a good start.

Fingers crossed for him. I hope my brood isn't too much for him. As if there wasn't enough upheaval in his life. Well, he's a puppy and I have three former mama dogs. Maybe one of them will take pity on him. Hopefully one who doesn't train future OES terrorists.

Oh, Coco...

I'll keep you posted.

Kristine
That's terrific Kristine! Sounds like a fun time at your house. :D
Thank you, Kristine, for taking the little guy in.

I can't wait to see the pictures!

It'll be good. It's like teaching him tough love... or something like that, lol!
:clappurple:
Hehehe... oh good for you!! :D

Now we'll get to see lots of pictures...
if you can manage to find the camera
If all else fails, I will take a picture on the way home from the nationals. :D
LeAnne and I and the dogs are once again taking advantage of Kristine's home for a stopover on the way home.
I have never seen Kristine with a camera, and she is way too busy to use it, let alone look for it or buy a new one!
Naw, I'm going to bathe him tomorrow and get some pictures. He's really not bad, just a little pee stained from kennel life. Not a lot of leg coat, and his coat is starting to change to gray so he needs a trim. But not matted or anything like that. Someone cared about this puppy.

My standards on temperament are incredibly strict and this boy is just passing with flying colors every step of the way.

He is under Grandma Belle's supervision. But, honestly, his dog skills are fabulous. My vet warned me he's an untrained little hellion, and, yes, he does things like pull on the leash (he's still so little though) and bounce around like an errant flea, but, no, uh-huh, someone put some basic work into this puppy.

I need to give him more time to show his naughty side, because right now he is just being too darn good. I'm sure things will come out.

He met the cat and was good with him (cat is very OES savvy, having raised several litters, and will not run) His piercing blue eyes take a little bit for me to get used to, but he has the standard sheepie grin and a butt wiggle to die for.

I only have him till Sunday when he goes to a foster home where he can get more one on one, but I can already tell it's going to be a pleasure.

Kristine and Rescue Rupert
Gosh he sounds like such a cute little devil! I can't wait to see those pictures. :P
Rescue Rupert - sounds cute.
Do they know how he ended up in the shelter - was he a stray or owner relinquished?
Can't wait to see pictures of the little guy. :D I bet he thinks he is in sheepdog heaven!
He's an owner turn-in. The reason given was that they were moving. No mention of his dysplasia. Maybe they didn't realize.

He's not limping, but his gait should have been a clue, and his rear is clearly not as strong as I would expect. He's a little cow-hocked, which could improve once he's in better condition. He's physically soft - could stand to lose the love handles and gain some musclemass. Of course, my definition of fit is probably a bit more extreme than most. I'm just surprised to see that kind of mushiness in a puppy. He runs and plays with my guys and I kind of have to watch it because I dont' think he has the sense to rate himself and my guys play rough.

Sybil has this incredible fascination with him. I've long known she has a maternal streak. She just lights up when she sees him. If he's in another room barking (he does NOT like to be left alone by the human - then again, that's not so unusal with dogs who have just been separated from their family and spent time in a shelter) she gets frantic trying to check on him. He slept in a crate in my bedroom last night (very nicely, in fact) and - I always scan the room for her at least once to make sure she's settled and not eating a lamp before I doze off - she was sleeping right up against the crate to be close to him. Pretty cute. I'll see if I can get a picture of that before he goes to his new foster dad.

Sigh... that is SO sweet.

Thanks for sharing him with us! :D
Getting to hear about his personality, it feels like we actually know him. The rest of us are kinda like virtual-fosters... but you get to do all the work

I like that - virtual fosters!

Good girl Sybil, look out for the little guy. :D
Awww.....Sybil sounds like such a sweetie...despite her penchant for eating anything & everything she comes across.
Still working on getting some nice pictures of him, but this is a start.

He was supposed to go to his new foster home today, but the gentleman was in a bad car accident on Friday, so he gets to stay with me until next Saturday. A terrible hardship, really.

Yeah, right!

Kristine & Roo
Adorable baby! And Roo seems to fit him too. He needs to grow into a name like Rupert. 8O
Oh thanks Kristine! :clappurple:
He is SO cute!
Just look at that smile :D
ohhhhhhhhh i want him just way too cute
Rupert is soo cute :D
What a great smile! He looks so perfectly silly & goofy - just a perfect sheepie face. :D

You know, our sheeps are so darn cute with those great big black noses, that beautiful hair, wonderful eyes, and floppy ears - but that sheepie smile just melts me - they all look like they are so happy. When Patch came to me she was scared to death this was just another short stop and not her home - after a few weeks she felt at home and has had that wonderful happy smile.
I'm in love with Rupert's smile and I haven't even met him yet. We have contacted Kristine and are hoping to set up a meeting. We've often wanted a brother for our Barkley and if Rupert needs an active lifestyle how does two days a week of puppy daycare and 2 walks a day sound to the forum???? We have a slender boy with a beautiful physique and would love to be able to provide Rupert with a furever home....
Doreen
OOHH! That sounds great, Doreen!! :D :clappurple:

I hope Barkley likes him. Little Dolan should definitely have 2 sheepdogs!
That would be WONDERFUL!!!
Please keep us posted :D

I echo that sentiment! They would have met him by now if I had my druthers and wasn't swamped with this specialty. All of my dogs are about to bring me up on charges of neglect. 8O

Rupert continues to do wonderfully though and keeps me laughing through the stress of it all. Some things happen for a reason. Hopefully that includes brothers named Barkley and Dolan...

Kristine & Roo
Just to report to the forum, we have an unofficial plan to meet Rupert and have our very own mini sheepiepalooza post nationals. Dawn, Leanne and gang will hopefully join us for the meeting on their way back to Minnesota...We are so excited....
Doreen, Dolan, Christopher and Barkley........
I hope the meeting goes great... after seeing that picture
of the little stinker I can't imagine that it won't! He just
looks like one of the world's happiest little sheepies.

Please keep us posted :D
Ohhhh!! This sounds exciting!! I hope the meeting goes well. :D
:P I live in Sheboygan, and am looking for another OES, female prefered as I have a 2-year old female now. Even if I am just a foster parent, that would be ok too. But I ultimatley want one to adopt for myself, preferably under the age of 2. Thanks
JPFondue@gmail.com
We had a great time visiting with everyone! We ended up meeting at vet Amy's home and had a great time with 11 OES and a basset! Rupert is just a little doll and is so cute. :D

It was so nice to see Doreen, Chris, Dolan and Barkley again. Pam and Simon made it too, so we really had a nice visit. I do have pictures, but just got home late last night and will have to get at least a start on the laundry and unpacking and eventually get to pictures too!
We had a great time with Dawn, LeAnn, Kristine and Amy and were so fortunate to meet baby Rupert. We are strongly considering adding him to our family. When my husband arrived at the meeting he was practically pile drived by sheepies, herded to the ground on his back and when the pack cleared there was baby Rupert laying on top of him and showering him with kisses. He sure knew what he was doing and how to pull at my husband's heart strings.
It was great to see everyone again, all of the sheepies and wonderful of Amy to open up her back yard for all to enjoy.
Rupert is an amazingly sweet dog with a great disposition, full of puppy energy and some killer piercing blue eyes.
We hope to see more of him soon.
Doreen, Christopher, Dolan and Barkley.
Here are some pictures of getting together to meet Rupert. I am sorry to say I actually only got 1 picture with the little guy in it! Mostly I have pictures of us and the dogs having fun running around. I know mine (basset Simon included) really loved the chance to run around after being cooped up all week with traveling and the show.

We had a great time getting together and thanks to Amy for volunteering her beautiful yard. We had a much more relaxed drive home after they ran off some of that pent up energy!
oh look like you all had a blast.. rupert looks like mom i want to go down and play..
I know this post is a little old... so I am sure Rupert is already adopted, but if not... I am VERY interested.
