Itchy Skin

For the last couple of weeks George has been scratching at his stomach and nibbling on at his bits.

At first we thought it was because his coat was dirty after being in the kennels and so we have had him clipped. However this has made no difference. He lies on the carpet and rocks backwards and forwards rubbing his belly!! :?

He has a red rash on his stomach and I noticed today that he has made himself bleed with all the scratching so we went to the vets who said skin problems can take a while to reslove but advised us to bathe him daily and use a cream on the rash and she has given us some steroids for him.

Hopefully this will clear up the rash and stop the scratching. He doesn't appear to be in any pain and he is still sleeping and eating normally.

We have been taking him to the beach recently which the vet said it could be the salt water or the sand, on the other hand it couldbe pollen or the washing powder I use or anything!! 8O

Has anyone else had a similar thing or have any idea what it could be???

Thanks in advance for any help!!

My sister's dog had an issue caused by the powdered carpet deodorizer they used. It was originally misdiagnosed as a serious condition (euthanasia was recommended) and later found to be contact dermatitis.

Since it's on his belly, it sounds like something he's laid on?? You can start by eliminating specific things to see if the condition improves... like carpet cleaners (thoroughly vacuum them up and don't use them again, at least for a while), maybe going to an unscented laundry soap/softener. Look to see what he's lying on and start there. Did he get a new bed or blanket recently? If he lies down outdoors, look to any lawn applications that might be the cause.

If the vet has advised bathing with an antibacterial soap, follow the instructions faithfully. Watch his tummy closely for any signs of infection... you don't want him to develop staph.

I hope his rash clears up soon... hugs to him!
one of my moms dogs were like that she used tea tree oil it worked great, helps with the ich also.
Could mats be causing my dog to scratch? My vet said itchy skin is common in big dogs. We use a lamb and rice dog food but this doesn't seem to help. You touch her and she goes crazy. The vet also suggested benydryl. She's even itchy after grooming (shave down) Any suggestions?
You can add tea tree to shampoo, just do not get it near their eyes also if you google emu oil, this is great for itchy anything and you can find emu shampoo for dogs.
This may sound like it is out of left field, but when Finnigan has full anal glands he scratches and digs his tummy and hindquarters. I know that isn't a typical presentation for the problem, but that's when I know he is having some issues "back there".
I hope for your sake it is something easy to remedy.
Good luck|!
