If you could take one thing...

If you could take one thing to a new house that
would make it feel like home, what would it be?
I have been thinking about this all week. We are
not moving immediately into the new house but
I will be spending time there painting and stuff. I
want to start the transition to thinking of it as home
and I told the boys to pick one thing - anything - that
would make it feel like home, and we will take it
over to the new house.
I think I am taking my coffee pot. Nothing says home
to me like smelling the coffee brewing.

We go to closing in 1 hour! I am so anxious I can
hardly stand it.

Since my kids are grown, it would have to be a pictureof them. Can't go anywhere without my babies!
I'd have to say it would be the table we eat at together. (Hey, I just thought of something... when No-Good-Nick was around, I stopped eating at the table with the kids becasue it was only a 4 person table and started eating in my chair in the living room  ... it's so lovely to be back at the table where I belong).
I think I'm more comfortable with an empty house due to the excitement of something "new," but I'd not take but buy some fresh flowers to view while painting. Happy thoughts!

...but a coffee pot sounds like a good idea!
Well it would have to be two things:

The sheepdogs that's an easy one! They represent what truly is a home.

Next I'd have to agree that beverages and snacks if you're doing work and toilet paper 8O . And don't forget the music. :cheer:

Oh and I forgot drag along the hubby too! Not a home without him.
I would bring over a plant - I love my plants and that to me would make it feel like home. Good thread
The TV. No contest.
The computer....so you can check in with the OES forum!
Something comfy to sit and rest on during your breaks from cleaning, painting, etc.
I think some pictures would make it feel like home and definitely something to sit on.
You know what Elissa? I've been here almost a year and a half and STILL don't have pictures or curtains up  I keep saying I want to wait until I get the walls painted....

 You can always take the pictures and curtains down for painting and if you like the location of them you can leave the nail holes and put them back up when you are done. Otherwise you can fix the locations then.
Definately the TV and the DVD player, plenty of DVD's for the kids to watch while you are busy. Oh and TP too, that is a essential.
Well it's official - we own the house! YAY!

Vic and I went over after signing, just the two of us.
That moment of peace with him was priceless and rare.
I adore my husband and I am so lucky to have him -he
is one in a million.

It is so different than the old house in so many ways.
It is very very quiet. I think that is the biggest thing I
will have to get used to. Funny, I never thought I got
used to all the traffic noise on Main street, because that
was always my big complaint. But at the new house it is
a glaring silence I haven't had in so long - I guess I was
used to the noise!
Then we took the kids out. Gabe wanted his blanket, which
he dragged all over the house and yard and barn. Ian
didn't take anything out yet. I'm not sure if he's just being
a tough guy or if he hasn't chosen something to take. He is
thrilled though, and loves the house. Tomorrow he is
going to mark off his new room in the basement - the one
we are building for him.
I was so overwhelmed today with all we have to do, not to
mention the moving itself, I never did take my coffee pot.
I am taking it in the morning.

I have very few pictures of family and the ones I do have are
packed with my bedroom stuff. The only pictures I have on
display are of my dogs - how's that for priorities?

I am cleaning tomorrow, and filling holes in the walls before I
start painting. I swear there are about 150 holes.

I took the camping chairs and a box of cleaning supplies, and
a radio. I'm hoping the fridge arrives soon - that will help with
the transition.

I'm starting to feel the separation from the old
house, and that's a little scary. I feel uprooted and like no
place is quite 'home'. I did have two panic attacks today,
which freaked Vic out a little. We sold my mom's house a year
ago and that was always my touchstone. As childish as it may
sound, that is making it tough. And I'm missing her pretty bad
right now. It's so hard the 'firsts' you go through after losing
a parent. Who would have guessed that at 41 I'd need her
approval so badly. Oh well, keep moving forward.

It's 4am now. I slept for a while but I am ready to go again.
I don't want to crash and burn but I feel like if I keep pushing
I can get all this prepping and moving done and behind me.
I'm gonna have to pace myself. Both of my previous moves
landed me in the hospital. I really don't have time for that
now. I seem to recall saying those exact words to the Dr last
time!

Best wishes shellie, now your there take it step by step and don't over do it. You have years now to get it all how you want it.

It will feel like home when all your stuff is in :D

Congratulations on your new home sweet home. :D

I am sure your mom is so happy for you all and smiling down from heaven, still watching over you. :D

Look forward to seeing piccys too when you can.
Congrats Shellie, Vic & boys. You only bought a house, now you will make it a home.

As far as what to bring, I think you should bring some sheepdog dust bunnies and scatter them throughout the house.
I am so happy for you. May God bless your new home with love, good luck and lots of good memories. Hugs DEANA
I've very happy for you Shellie! I get teary eyed when we drive past the house I grew up in from ages 4-18.

I think I might be like your son, Gabe. If there was absolutely positively one item I could bring with me anywhere, it would be my blankie :D

As far as a "big" girl item, I'd be lost without the TV. I could use the comptuer at work :D
dogs, a bed and a t.v done lots of moving dogs make you feel at home, bed because you are going to need it and a t.v IT IS Sept and you do not want to miss any new shows.
