Male vs. Female?

Any thoughts on how the personalities of males and females differ, generally speaking? We are leaning towards getting a male because we read it will bond to the female owner better and is slightly more affectionate. My husband travels quite a bit and I will be the primary caretaker. I'd love to hear if your dogs' personalities play true to the typical "male" or "female" characteristics.

Oh my dogs do for sure. :D
My female Rags is bossy and independant and loving on her terms, but loves her Daddy big time. When she wants attention from Daddy she has a special "I want attention! dance." He's the only one to get the dance. Or she paws at us or bulldozes us with her head when she thinks it's time for her to receive some attention. If she doesn't want attention and you start petting her she gets up and walks away.

My male, Pepsi is a snuggle bug and just LOVES his Mommy. He is a very happy guy. He is definitely more affectionate with everyone, not just me. He is also usually not more than about 5 feet away from me.
Right now Pepsi is sitting on the floor two feet away from me. Rags is sitting in the other room about 10 feet away from her Dad.
I have to say all 3 OES girls were Daddys girls. Our rescue not oes but a boy is mine all mine!!! I guess it is up to you. Lets hear what others have to say.
I've only had one girl dog of my own compared with 3 males, all 4 OES.

The boys have all been more laid back and generally more affectionate. Sophie is very affectionate--on her terms. She's much more bossy and demanding, although Archie won't put up with any of it from her and Sherman puts up with little. She's particularly smart and resourceful.

Archie and Sherman seem more clownlike, but they are also very smart, in different ways than Sophie. They're more physical when we play, too.
All the furkids in my house are female so I can't speak for the male, but all of my animals are very affectionate. They all get extremely excited when Chuck gets home because I'm with them all day long. Violet/China lay at my feet most of the day and periodically go and lay other places. I don't really see a preferrence with either. Pearl the cat spends her days outside in the backyard hunting and such, she is to busy to spend any time in the house other then meals. Just look at the personality of the puppy and pic the one that fits your family the best. Good luck!
I have never had a male sheepdog so I can’t speak to how affectionate they are. Sydney was as affectionate as any dog I’ve known. She would lay beside us if we sat on the floor or sit near us if we were sitting on the couch. She would come up and put her head on our lap to be petted. Bella is affectionate but on her terms. If we sit on the floor she brings a toy to play toss or tug with. Rarely does she just come and lay beside us and never for long. However, if she feels ignored she will tell you and can become quite bossy.

Both dogs were/are “Velcro dogs”. After we settled on Bella for a name I was thinking that we should have called her “I lean”. The point I guess that I am trying to make is that both of our girls have had similar traits but different personalities. With Bella, depending on her mood she will be affectionate with either my wife or with me and sometimes just lay across both our laps at the same time but never for long.
I have had 4 boys and 1 girl OES and I definately prefer boys. They are sweeet and don't seem to realize they have a choice whether they obey or not. My females (I have a female std poodle now) always seemed to question authority. My latest boy, Nigel, is already a velco dog at 15 weeks. He gets very upset if I leave the house. I alway hear him barking when I leave, and feel sorry for whoever is watching him and listening to the ear-splitting puppy bark. LOL 8O
I have only been owned by a female sheepie....and two male Cockers. But.....when Roxy was living....she was "my" dog and she stuck to me like glue.....everywhere I was, she was. If I wasn't around...then maybe she would give my hubby a little attention....but as soon as I walked through the door....it was all about me. :D

The 2 Cockers (one deceased) have always been more my husband's dogs than mine.
In years past I have had a girl and a boy sheepie and both were more my dogs than hubby or kids . Now I have another girl and kids are gone but she still is more attached to me than hubby.the first two sheepies were quiet and biddable but Duchess is a right proper little madame , on the go all the time and very very bossy :D
I have only one real statement to make on boys vs girls. For girls, there's a reason they call them bitches!!
What does everyone mean when they say the females are bossy? :?
I guess that means you don't have a girl?

My girl literally pounds the snot out of the boys. She's a tiny sheepdog but litterally pushes them around. They can't rollover unless she says it's okay. If one of them gets up and didn't ask permission or whatever, she is up in a flash and will put them in their place. She's not mean in any way but she is an evil, conniving bitch! When I tell my mentors stories of her antics, they seem to act as if this is the most obvious information in the world.

Maybe controlling, dominating, planning to take over the world, is a better way to describe girls?

(Cue Lisa's rebuttle on why girl sheepdogs rock.)

Actually, we will have a girl, we just don't have her yet. If we only have 1 sheepdog, and it's a girl, will she probably behave alright? I'll be sad if she loves my husband more than me. :( :( :(

I'll back you up before Lisa can pop in. ;)

Lucy is 13 years old and about 55 pounds. If the boys (105 and 130 respectively) even walk by her wrong, they're pressed into the corner and she barks in their faces to tell them off. They run like babies to escape her wrath. There is nothing sadder than a giant Komondor running for cover from a frail little white fluffball!

My boys are my big babies. They're the cuddlers, the sweethearts and the clowns. Lucy, well, like Mandy said, they call them bitches for a reason!
I don't know...Barney is super-cuddly, but Maggie is too, so I'd have to call a tie in terms of affection in my experience.

I'm sure she'll "behave" just fine  My girl is all about behaving...its just that she expects everyone ELSE to too  ! Think of them more as strict matrons than wild troublemakers. Abby (my girl) loves both my husband and me....but she is very "daddy" focused. Which is sweet, actually. I love the fact that she adores him so much....I think he's pretty cool too! 8)
They are probably smarter as in all females...aren't we all amarter than our husbands?

Don't get mad Ron
Some of us can't type though!!!

:P :P :P JILL POP  :x

I'm queen of all bitches in this house.

At least mine don't hump things   And no dingle dangles to groom around or shampoo. 8) Or peeing on their legs with the missed aim :P The boys get pongier on the undercarriage quicker :? :P

Oh AND we can go for walkies without having to avoid every tree and post in the street, one squat and there off for their walk 8)

Sheepie girls rule. :cheer: Sheepie boys drool
Sheepie girls rock

Seriously both sexes are great, just make sure both mom and dad have a great nature and pup will too.

Kelsey is ALL mommas girl and brie is everyones, she'll take what she can get from who ever is close by, she is not fussy.

Suzi Rules, she is allowed too Mandy, she is the show queen and prima donna with her awards. A bitch with attitude WOO HOO go suzi girl, keep those males in line & under your paw & drooling
Lily is just a little girl, 6 months & 57 lbs and she pounces, play bites, taunts & sasses Benjamin whos's 2.5 yrs & 97 lbs. She has no fear & he just rolls over & lets her do it. However, at the end of the day Ben is the boss, he just has a tons of tolerance for his baby sister

Benjamin is a total momma's boy, he won't let me out of his sight for a moment & while Lily loves her mom, she is a bit more independant. Ben's my velcro :) Lily is, well, Lily

I don't really pick my pups when I'm looking, I let them come to me and pick me BUT, I think the next time around I might lean a bit more towards the boys.....................not that I don't adore & get a good laugh out of my girl, but I do prefer the boy over the girl....shhhhh don't tell her..........
Pita is Very Very affectionate.
She will lie next to you for hours until you get up to go to the bathroom... then she'll follow you to the toilet, squeeze into the tiny space between the toilet and the wall.... and hope that you scratch her body...
She even makes a tiny moan when you scratch the right spot.

She is quite a daddy's girl and ALWAYS craves his attention.
But if he's busy, she'll follow me everywhere.
Our female is my suck, thank goodness because it was me who wanted a oes. I just gor our male at the moment he is Sami's suck but I did notice that he follows my husband more then anyone, but when I get home from work he is now at the door waiting also for me, he does sleep at everyone feet(can not get on couch)
