(Almost) a really bad fall

Having Heart for 4 weeks, I find I am constantly almost tripping on her.
I guess it's a herding thing but she is always right in front of me when I walk. It makes matter worse since she is shin high, almost like, when I was a kid and someone put a rope across the walk to make ya trip, HAHAHAH...(not).

Yesterday, I was walking with an armload of laundry, couldn't see of course, and boom...on the floor..THANK GOODNESS the towels broke my fall.   AND Heart got out of the way quickly.

A little bruise on my knee, no harm done this time. I am really afraid of falling on her...how terrible would THAT be...

I'm tempted to put one of the bell training bells around her neck so I can hear her coming.....

Does anyone else have this problem or am I just a clumsy fool :excited:

I haven't walked a straight line in years! I'm always dodging dogs, walking around them or stepping over them. I've found training them to "beep-beep" helps them move, but you have to become more dog aware. Assume she is at your feet at all times, look constantly. I can't imagine walking with my head up, for nearly 40 years I've been looking down for sheepdogs, LOL! The bell would work if she is moving.....if she's on the floor asleep or just standing still, you'll hear bells as you trip over her again.

Last night I was trying on some new clothes (Labor day weekend shopping!) and I actually did fall over Bingley - right into the cat tree. It bruised my ego more than anything, but I was worried about ripping the new clothes! I love these dogs a lot but part of that loves means that THEY love to be right behind, in front, and to the side of you!! :D

I'm sorry you got hurt. I always worried about falling on one too. Anyone with sheepies has probably had this challenge... you're definitely NOT alone. I do a sho-sho command with my hand to "part the dogs". Of course it doesn't work with my mostly blind girl. The beep-beep command is a great idea :D

You might try the sheepie-shuffle

It takes a conscious effort but start out slow and drag/scuff your feet as you walk. You're sure not to step on any little feet (or tails) this way. I found myself doing this as I walked behind my husband at the grocery store the other day because I didn't want to step on his heels. 8O

A couple of the elderly ladies that have done wildlife rescue for decades had mentioned they always walk this way so instead of stepping on a little "someone" they simply push them out of the way.
Like Jaci said you learn to do the sheepie/lab/pyr/..... shuffle. Don't bother trying to step over because then they stand up and knock you of your feet. Just shuffle slowly and hopefully they will move. I not you nudge them and tell them to move. With 6 dogs sleeping in varieous places at any one time you learn to shuffle especially at night.
My whole life is about trying to navigate dog speed bumps.
Yesterday, Riley walked over to me and started making those gagging sounds. So I quickly started moving her away from the sofa and off the carpet. My husband ran over to help push her off the carpet - she such a petite 88 lb girl. 8O
Unfortunately, he pushed her forward - into the side of my left knee. I buckled, but didn't fall. I was nonweight bearing for 30 minutes. DH felt terrible.

But we did manage to get Riley to the tiled before she puked. :D
Ouch and eeeeuuuwww. I hope hubby cleaned up!

OMG!!! GREAT Idea

...Like when we go to Florida and we shuffle in the ocean for stingrays!!!! DUH!!!!!

THANK YOU
THANK YOU
THANK YOU
I will begin "training" immediately!!!!!

I just KNEW I could count on you guys for EXPERT advice....
Hi,

I think it's one of those things that becomes second nature (the sheepie shuffle) that comes after years of living with these guys.

I can't walk down my hallway without being flanked by Merlin and Panda and hip checked along the way. Good thing I live in Canada as I make a great hockey player!

Good luck to you!

Marianne

Amen to that... it seems every time we start to step over them they decide it's time to stand. You get caught off balance when this happens all the while trying not to accidentally kick them in the head.

We were talking about the laundry part of this post this morning and my husband mentioned Panda. She sits at the top of the steps and waits for us to come back up with the laundry. When we get near the top of the steps she starts throwing out her paw to shake. (She arrived with this hand shaking greeting/quirk). Once you do the "secret hand shake" she'll stand and allow us to pass while she attempts to steal a towel. Dogs...

Ah... the old directional-guidance-puke-maneuver  . We're familiar with that one too. I'm so glad to hear we aren't alone in this journey :D
I get a lot of use out of the stingray/sheepie/aussie shuffle. I was thinking about this the other night as I was navagating my bedroom at 3:00 am. I have a hard time sleeping through the night, so I get up and get out of the way so as not to wake my hubby. Both China and Violet sleep, usually on the floor in our room, but in the dark it is sometimes hard to tell. So I am very careful about where I put me feet in the dark. lol Violet will not get up for anything so I'm safe to climb over her, but as I've said in prior post, her hair is long and it is not uncommon for me to step on her hair. lol All and all no falls so far on the inside of the house. I have had many close calls though. I am only five feet tall so Violet does come up pretty high on me, but if I'm not paying attention....shakes me up a bit. Now when we take our walks, I've gone down a few times, the last was just before Easter, just before I came down with the shingles...hmmm I wonder if that is related? I guess April just wasn't my month this year. lol
Anyway, just becareful!!!!!!!!!!
My Sami was always herding under my feet, our new fellow is not as bad, I ws worried about 2 every where under my feet, but it got better Sami is to busy with the puppy and the puppy to busy either playing with Sami or hiding to get a break from her. They both now like to lay under the computer table, when Sami gets going (like after a BATH) Blue runs for cover.
My girls are always underfoot! I have a small galley-like kitchen and when I am in there, both girls are as well! One of them most likely is laying in front of the refrigerator door, and if I need to open it, I just open it and slide the Sheepdog with the door. They don't stand up, they just allow themselves to be slid. I trip over them in doorways and walking from one end of the house to the other always involves maneuvering around them either lying in the path or walking in front of me. My friends think I'm crazy that I just step over them and don't think anything about it.

Oops, forgot to log in again.

Ah! I need to tell my sons why they've turned out to be such great hockey players - the old secret dog-training.

Buffett belongs to the same secret society. Four steps from the top and he has his paw out.

I know the Sheepie shuffle well, that's why I like having hard wood floors. Static doesn't build up as much as carpet when you shuffle off to the bathroom at 3am.

The worst for me is excited Sheepies on the run. Several years ago three of them clipped my knee at full speed. I don't remember, but everyone there said the flip and flat back landing rated at least a 9.9 at any gymnastic event. 8O

Right off the plane she was doing that to strangers at the airport.

8O Oh my...

They can be down right scary if they're heading right at you at a high rate of speed. When Panda arrived, it was like she was living in an alien body. She had zero grace... she would bump into walls, step of everyone in the way instead of carefully placing her feet and she miscalculated stops. But we wonder if it was because she was over confined?? She's gotten better in her 2 years with us... maybe the saying, "With age comes grace" is true. :D
Do you ever get the feeling your furkids get your feet on purpose as the pass by in play come up for pets?. Our feet stay bruised from puupy nails digging in as they bank off of us or run past or come up for pets.
All I can say to Val is it is easier when they are grown...puppy size is shin high and invisible. I am always clipping Nigel with things, because he is always within a 1 foot radius. Vacuuming my room just made him pee on my rug. Whay are they always scared of the vacuum cleaner. I have never chased any animals with it, yet they all run and hide.
Mm~Let me see.,that's a serious problem!!`If you are careless,you'll hurt her~!(Maybe!) :( ,,,sooooo,,Just be careful about her!~haha~ :D

My German Shepherd used to do that.
He would always be in my way when I would be going somewhere. I would either do the "Beep, Beep!" or move it, move it. But I swear he would slow down when I said it.
Well I did'n fall over George but I skidded on a puddle on Friday evening, I landed on my knee cap absloute agony, I slid my hand down to my knee and realised that my knee cap was now on the side of my leg......ugh! Luckily Rob was home. Called ambulance....50 mins later they arrived, I was so in shock they couldn't give me IV pain relief so I had gas and air....got me in ambulance then the gas and air ran out......got to casualty and they gave me a tablet and waited for a while, then with some more gas and air the Dr popped it back aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaagggggggggggggghhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!!!..Any way here I am in a splint and cruches on bed rest till i see someone on Wednesday.
Puppies are great arn't they :D
OMG Lindy! I feel so bad for you! OUCH!!! I hope you are a quick healer. Plz keep us up to date on your healing progress.

Sheepie/Aussie hugs :ghug:
I am so sorry to hear about your fall, Lindy. We will be anxious to hear about your doctors appointment on Wednesday. Hoping for the best for you.
Thanks Mophead and Helen, thank goodnes for the forum and msn, what did we do before computers?????
Ow Lindy!!! They were pretty slow - 50 minutes for the ambulance?!
That happened to a friend when we were kids. We were riding our horses and Rich's horse went too close to a tree. Boy did he yell! I remember thinking his knee should NOT look like that!!
Hope your bedrest goes well. :)

oh no....hope you are ok. A great excuse to rest and enjoy forum.
Owwwwwwowwowwwowowowwowowooowwwwww

I am still wincing for you.

I hope your leg feels better right away!

I need to go take a deep breath now.
oooooh Lindy 8O :( that's horrible!

I hurt my right knee while playing "catch me if you can" with the sheepies in June (nothing like as bad as yours!), and when it STILL hurt in August, I finally went to a DR.....apparently I may need to have a BIG needle put in, and blood drained out from under the cap! 8O Im a sissy, so Im waiting to see if it'll drain on its own, now that fair season is done, and I'm not on my feet all the time.
