Should add a new pup?

Hi I have just added and new pup to our family our oes is 10 months old and is my suck. We added out new pup 1 week today and it has been great. Sami 10 months was a little jealous at first and just a little my husband thinks we should have named the pup SAMI PUPPY because they play all ther time, we do not get the cuddles as much as the first one (just like kids  ) but they sure do get along the funniest thing that happened is when my son is playing tug of war with rope Sami does not always share and Blue of course wants in sooo what does he do goes after Sami's tail and tug of war with that(Yes our sheepies have tails) I think is funny but I do not think Sami thinks so. Sami will even put a toy in her mouth to tease the pup to get him to play or get him outside. So I would get a second they make everything so much fun. |
oh ya my hub thinks we should have gotten another this guy loves sleeping on his foot when on the computer,like slippers I told him to what a month he will fit both feet then  |
| My recommendation would be to wait a year or so.
There was another post recently about someone who was considering getting 3 pups at the same time and many thoughtful suggestions were made. Not all apply to your situation but some do. I have usually had two dogs at a time throughout my life but they have always been seperated by 4 or more years. For three reasons. First I don't want to deal with two "puppies" at once, training and teaching a pup takes a huge amount of time and effort. Big dog tend to stay puppies for up to two years. I also believe that a young dog learns from a mature dog. Secondly, money may not be an object but have you ever added up the first year expenses of a puppy? I did with my last pup just for the heck of it and discovered that with all the routine, and not so routine vet cost associated with the first year (shots, neutering, incidental problems) the Vet cost was $1,000 dollars. After that the cost is more like 300-400 a year (until you reach the geriatric age). And finally, dogs that are young together will be old together. Which means you faces "geriatrica" expenses x's two. Tasker is 12 years old and his Vet bills this year have been sky high. The other problem is you face the potential for dealing with the illness' of aging and the heartbreak of death in two dogs at once. I have found that have one elder dog and one youngun to be a very good thing. The young dog keeps the old dog active and healthy and the older dog helps to teach the young one manners. Of course, none of those issues may concern you. But my personal preference is to keep at few more years between dogs. |
| My Mulligan has the following story:
His owner thought he was so wild and crazy at 1 year they decided that he needed some companionship; another dog with whom to spend energy. So they got him a puppy from the same breeder. 7 or 8 months later they were both in rescue. If you have the same motivation or hope that adding another will reduce the amount of time you need to spend with your dog, I don't think it would be wise. If you feel you aren't spending enough time with your dog and have room for another.... go for it! |
