KIDNEY FAILURE? HELP PLEASE!

It's been a while since I've posted - please forgive my absence. I read - but haven't posted. Anyway - today I had a very troubling day with Rosie. Rosie is my almost 3 year old OES. She'll be 3 on Tuesday. Anyway - last night Rosie and Max (my 4 yr. old male) were "playing" and I noticed that Rosie had a bloody face - So I looked her over and didn't see any "origin" of the blood but thought maybe she bit her tongue-it was brighter, cherry red. So I cleaned her up and didn't think anything else of it.

So this AM I woke up early and ran to a dr. appt. and when I returned at 11:00 AM my house had BIG PUDDLES of slimy drool all over and Rosie was DROOLING LIKE A FOUNTAIN AND PANTING HEAVY! She went outside and had some "loose" BM in the yard. I looked around in her mouth for something "stuck" in her gum or tooth, maybe a cracked tooth or something but found nothing. I gave her some pepto and tried to clean her up. She drank a lot of water too. So I put her in her room while I ran one more short errand. When I returned - she had thrown up in her room and more slimy drool. She went outside and drank a ton of water again. I then got a bit more concerned and called the vet. He squeezed me into his already double booked afternoon and when I took her down there - the drool & panting slowed down some (but she still was drooling more than usual). He looked at her and didn't see anything in her mouth either. Her temp was 103.7 but he said it may be up a little because she was so "excited" about being there. (what's even "normal" for a dog?) She is also getting ready to start going into heat and he did find some sores on her gums. Those could part of the drooling problem-but he seemed puzzled. So anyway - anytime the tech or anyone would try to lift her - she would pee on the floor some. She has always been a nervous pee-er, like when someone new comes into our house she and they reach down to pet her - she pees. But anyway, I suggested he do a urine to see if she had a UTI or something. He did and he came back and told me that her urine was "less concentrated" or something about her specific gravity being really low and that it may be a sign of kidney failure, liver failure, cushings disease or Diabetes. He suggested a blood test to help diagnose-which I agreed to. I won't have the results back now until probably Tuesday or a slight chance tomorrow.

I can't believe a dog that's not even 3 yet could have kidney failure - she is sitting here next to me totally exhausted from her day - she's stopped drooling, has eaten her dinner and kept it all down....seem perfectly NORMAL. She's even been out and played with Max. Needless to say - I have been so upset over this and just don't even know what to make of this all! Has anyone ever heard of anything like this in such a young dog? Any Vets out there?

Sorry to hear about your girl, I hope it is nothing too serious.

The other thing too I would of not let her gulp a ton of water as you would risk her bloating from doing that, even though she wanted the water, I would of just given it to her in small amounts often rather then let her consume tons in one go.

Link for Bloat, worthwhile read there. http://www.globalspan.net/bloat.htm

Does your vet have any suspisions there for maybe the start of low grade Pyometra happening there as she is intact and due in heat soon?

I hope it all works out OK and keep us posted as to what the results are with her. Hopefully all good there & not too serious.

Thinking of you both.
I don't have any experience with this but I have alot of sympathy. . . I am hoping for better news from the blood test. . .
Poor Rosie!

I hope she recovers completely before tomorrow.

WHY DO THINGS LIKE THIS ALWAYS HAPPEN OVER A LONG WEEKEND???

That is so true. My Macy got sick with her pyometra and pneumonia on a New Year's Eve, after 5pm of course!

I hope everything comes out well for Rosie.
Oh gosh you must be so worried :ghug:

Keep a really close eye on her, if there are any more problems I would get a 24 hour vet or second opinion in the meantime.
Definitely NOT a vet here...
As Lisa mentioned, pyometra could be a possibility... closed pyometra is said to be harder to diagnose.

She didn't get overheated...

or accidentally get into any medication?

If she drank A LOT of water, it seems this could have caused the urine sample to be diluted.

We were two days prior to starting a trial of meds for diabetes insipidus because Panda's urine was too dilute when I figured out the problem. Panda has an "issue" with our drinking water system where she would drink ungodly amounts of Culligan drinking water and of course pee in the house. The high water consumption resulted in her urine being very dilute. We combined both drinking water and well water and her urine concentrate returned to normal.

We're all just guessing until the vet calls with results. I'm very sorry you're going through this and I know the agony of having to wait. Please keep us posted on how Rosie's doing.
Well today was a good day for Rosie. She woke up like her old self and seems perfectly normal. I called the vet 3 times today to see if the bloodwork returned - but it didn't come back yet so - I guess I have to wait until Tuesday. It will be a long wait. I don't know what to make of all this at this point. I guess I have no choice but to wait and see what the blood shows. I was looking this up online and found a site that talks about this and one vet recommended taking multiple urine tests and taking a "first morning" urine would be most accurate - along with others thru the day. I think that if the blood comes back normal - I may just request that we try that to see what happens. But then again - maybe she was "sick" with something else like a tummy bug and I took her in and we found this out before it was too late and she can get some kind of treatment. That aweful drooling is completely gone and she's not doing that now - go figure :?

But for now - I have my good little girl back and she seems fine. I just pray that this is here to stay - I'll let you know what I find out when I hear from the vet. I'm watching her closely......

Thanks for all your support and help - just pray she's ok....she's our youngest baby!
So glad rosie is normal today and keeping positive thoughts there that all the blood work & urine samples are fine. :D

Sometimes you wish they could tell you what is going on with them like "Ma I feel Sick and my tummy hurts" Would make the guessing what is wrong with them so much better then for everyone & less stressfull.

Hugs to you and Rosie, positive thoughts flowing. :D

:ghug:
Glad to hear she's acting normal again. :D
I hope everything comes back good with the bloodwork.
How frustrating to wait so long!!

Good news that Rosie is acting more normal. I hope the rest of the weekend goes by just as well.
GOOD NEW EVERYONE! The Vet called this morning and said that the blood work came back good. Kidneys looks good along with the Liver function! PRAISE THE LORD! Her urine did have blood in it and showed a bacteria - something about "rods". And had very low specific gravity. We are going to start her on a sulfer based antibiotic tomorrow and in the mean time (since I can't get down there to get the meds until tomorrow afternoon) she's taking some amoxicillian that I have at home already. He said that should help but that she needs the sulfer based drug.

I think once she takes the full dose of antibiotic - I will request that he test a "first AM urine" and make sure all looks good. But thank goodness she's not having kidney failure. I was so upset! Thank you so much for your support! It really means a lot!
That is great news :clappurple: I am happy for you and your OES. Hugs to you both
I'm glad she's doing better!!
Wonderful news!!! :clappurple:
That's wonderful news!! :D
Thanks so much for the update.
Great News!!!!!! :yay: :yay: Congrats....
Good News!!!!!! Get better soon Rosie!
Wonderful! So glad your girl is okay. :D
What a horrible thing to go through and right before a long weekend. So glad of the happy outcome! :clappurple: What a relief.

I never knew dog's could have pepto. I went to read the box and it has artificial sweetener and also says not to give if you have diabetes. I think I read somewhere that dogs can't have artifical sweetener that they don't have whatever it takes for it to break down. Sorry just thinking out loud.

So glad your baby is OK!
