Scared of dog house?

We recently bought Mrs. Twigglesworth (Twiggy) an Igloo style dog house for the backyard. Problem is, she seems to be scared of it and wont use it!

We threw her outside toys in there, my husband even tried to crawl into it but it doesn't seem to work.

It's possible she's using it more than I know but, we've had a few days where in stormed during the day while we were at work and Twiggy was outside, we figured she'd go into her dog house to stay dry but sure enough she was soaking wet when we got home from work.

I"m thinking maybe the Igloo style is just too hot for the summer maybe? Or she's weird and hates it :( Which it wasn't cheap as I"m sure most of you know! :/

She is a sheepdog and therefore is most likely afraid of it. Put an irresistable treat or bone in there and praise her for going in there. Keep putting the treats in and see if you can't get her to do a down stay. Do not let her exit with the treat - encourage her to eat them in the igloo. She will get it eventually. I list of items that Harry was afraid of is too long to mention - including the bathroom at Therapy Dog class last night! I was just glad that none of the evaluators saw him flip out until I convinced him it was okay.

Good luck. She will be okay!
Two possible things: those things smell kinda weird when they're new so maybe she just doesn't like the stink. They have that new plasticy smell until they've aired out a little. Two, it may just be too warm in there right now. Those Igloos don't exactly let air flow freely (which makes them good in the cold) but they're pretty hot in the summer, which also intensifies the smell.

Yeah, I crawled into my friend's Igloo dog to check it out when he got one for his dog so I'm speaking from my experience more than dog, lol.
I thought it was only me who had sheepdogs who were afraid of their own shadows. I know Nigel is still a baby at 14 weeks, but every time I move something around the house, he freaks out and barks at it. The past few days it was my knitting bag. Today I ran the upright vacuum and he peed on the rug for the first time. He piddles when he gets really excited to see someone too. I guess I have a little pisher! LOL
it is probably too hot out.....panda wont even go in hers this time of year....what we did to get her to love her dog house was to bring the dog house into the laundry room, where she stayed at night, put her blankets and baby in there....once we knew that she was actually sleeping in it, we moved it to the yard.....brian did build a concrete pad for it to sit on, so that it isnt directly on the ground....

and yes, doing laundry WAS a pain in the butt for a while 8)
Yay! someone else who climbed in the dog house! I did the same thing with my 1st dog. I had just graduated from college, got my 1st real job and my 1st dog all of my own.

I had this nice dog house, and Jenny, my long-haired German Shepherd wouldn't go in it. I tried treats, her dog dish, toys - all no good. So, I crawled in and called her in with me.

As I was sitting in it petting my dog, my new boss pulled into the yard......
I was sooooo embarressed! I crawled out and he tried not to laugh. It took a long time to live that one down!
Mine have never gone into the igloo! What a waste of money. I shudder to think what the kittens did in there........at least I saw them in there from time to time.
If she never takes to the dog house should I be really worried about her this winter? My husband and I both work and she's out during the day. I come home at my lunch to give her cuddle time and let her in a bit but then's back outside till we get home from work.

When it's especially cold, of course we'll keep her inside in her crate. But I thought the igloo might be a nice warm alternative this winter.
oops! that last post was me :)
i dont know where you live, but i would place a bet that says if its cold enough outside and warm and inviting inside the igloo..shell use it.....

in the winter we put a down dog bed and 2 regular blankets in there....brian thinks its too much....but i dont want to chance her getting cold...

I'm not a fan of leaving dogs outside unattended ever but if you're in an area that gets really cold in the winter, yes, you should be worried. She has to have some kind of shelter outside if she's going to be an outside dog, preferable something that is insulated well and keep her dry and out of the wind. What is she using now to stay out of the rain while she's outside?

If she's not into the Igloo, take it back and maybe get something else or make something even? If you come home at lunch, I don't think it would a problem to keep her crated in the house during the winter instead. It would be safer all around and you wouldn't have to worry about her getting hurt or having something happen outside.
I agree with Jill, I would never leave a dog outside without being home. THere are just too many things that can happen :(

When Tasker was younger and I couldn't trust him alone in the house he was left in a crate, he did very well and actually loved his crate. Ty is crated during the day now (I don't leave them alone together because of the disparity in size), he too love his crate. In the morning when we are bustling around getting ready for work we often find him sitting in his crate patiently waiting for us to leave.
I too am very against leaving dogs outside when no one is home.
Awful things can & do happen to outside dogs.
My neighbor used to leave his St Bernard outdoors all the time.
The dog was struck by lightning & died.
I see my dogs as my children. Who would leave children outside when no one is home? Sorry, but I feel very strongly about this!
