Kids birthday Parties?

Is it getting ridiculous "Kids Parties"?

They just had a topic about this on TV here, hiring party planners, ipods for all in Party Packs, entertainment etc etc, some parents spending in excess of $5000 for 5-6 year old parties. 8O I was astounded 8O

The Beckhams just spent 20,000 pounds on one of their kids for a diamond earring for his 6th birthday. 8O Without the cost of his party on top of that. 8O

What ever happened to simply fun parties for kids, pass the parcel games, lollie bags and balloons? Running around playing, just being kids and having fun, mum making a simple cake & party food for all?.

It is becoming very fashionable to hire a party planner to organise a kids party.

Is this just getting way over the top when it comes to little kids parties?

I am so glad I am passed all this with little kids. It's like a contest, who has the best party and who can outdo others. I wonder if the kids really enjoy all of this?

Way, WAY over the top. People have too much dispoible income to be throwing so many fancy and crazy-expensive parties for their kids.

I think the parents would be better off saving for their kid's college or their own retirements.

I don't get it.
I agree. I couldn't believe it when I heard what people do to! How will you make their sweet 16 special if they're already getting parties that some only get when they get married!!!

Even $1000 seems excessive to me!
Shoot.. I would never spend more than a couple hundred on a party (not including presents), if that! 8)
No I don't get it either ron, just think what they would expect the following year too to top off the previous party. 8O

Boy oh boy, just ridiculous :?

Sweet 16 or 21st parties yeah sure you spend more & make it a special time for a special birthday, but the rest of the years I am astounded still. 8O
I'm with you! One of ours is turning 12 soon & when the subject of a party came up her friends made the comment that she has THE BEST parties!
which consist of a hot dog & marshmellow roast at my inlaws ,who live in the country.
We are 6 people living on one income, but I hope my girls are learning some values along the way!
Our 5 year old just celebrated w/ a cake& piniata at the local pool. It was perfect.
I think its absolutely ridiculous!! I think spending $200-300.00 is too much...especially when you realize that most kids get stuff throughout the year!!

I remember the coolest b-day party we had...mom let lisa and myself invite 3 girls each and then took us on a tour of Mcdonalds...with hamburgers and shakes afterward....it was really fun, until becky davis threw up her shake 8O ...
I so hope becky davis googles herself now!!!

hehehe.....she'll remember it well, maybe she will get a good laugh..actually i wonder if she is still willing to drink those shakes 8O .....i could tell you a story about me, the flu and stouffers lasgana
Come to think of it, I spent about $1000 on one party once here at the house... it was for 72 people (adults) and included chicken, steaks and beer and buying a picnic table or two if I recall.

How can someone spend so much for a kid's party? I don't mean in the financial responsibility sense, I mean it as in "what could you do to spend that much money?"

Have pony rides and a ferris wheel and a bouncy thing and 500 kids with cake from Montilios?

What's wrong with pony rides? Those were some of the funnest parties I went to or had as a kid!

okay, now im really jealous....ive been missing out on something!!
I didn't say anything was wrong with pony rides, just as an example of part of an excessive party.
My sons 21st was well under the $1000 mark and we had 80 there, hired a place, supplied food and drinks& alcolhol, had a cake made, hired juke box, decorated the place with helium ballons etc etc and I can't see how someone can spend $5000 + on a 5 years old party. Maybe the party planner gets a huge fee, maybe they hire live bands who knows, ipods must add up there as party gifts to all the guests :?

My sons friends went home with nothing just some cake as we fed and entertained the lot of them :P  Drove some of them home too after, so chauffer service as well
Wow!

Maybe we need to hire you to plan a party! :D :D :D
It's complete nonsense to spend that much money on a child's birthday party. It becomes about which parent can outdo the other and loses complete perspective about what is best/right for the children.

That aside, I can see where the money goes if you invite 75 kids and rent a property for the party, tables, chairs, tents, flowers, fountains, cater the food, gift bags for the attendees, etc. The cake like something from Ace of Cakes -not to mention hiring the rides or inflatables that most kids partys have now days. It adds up pretty quickly.
I would love to have an Ace of Cakes cake. I wanted to get one for Cam for either his 30th bday or graduating from med school, but the cakes START at $500...so I went to the grocery store and bought a yummy $10 cake! :D

But those Ace of Cakes are amazing looking.
i didnt have 75 friends to invite to my party...lol...

LOL... that was funny. I was thinking the same thing. I hired a "mad scientist" to do a bunch of cool science experiment style tricks for the kids for a birthday party, but it was only $100.00, and they made their own "goo" to take home so I didn't do party favors, and we had a cheap grocery store cake... but that's as fancy as I've ever gone (and almost none of the kids even showed up).

We usually throw one big party for all 3 kids around Halloween, and just make it a costume party, so then everyone gets to use their costume more than once. They have a "Boo at the Zoo" thing here where the kids can go to the zoo and go trick-or-treating. We usually have all the kids meet us at the house, do cake and ice cream, then presents, then we head off to the zoo. Everyone gets a bag full of candy from the trick-or-treating at the zoo, then we head home, and their parents pick them up (except each of my kids gets to pick one friend to spend the night). It never costs too much money, and everyone has a great time!

Did you see the beaver the other day?
I know one way to spend that much money on a kid's party. It startes when your "Smash Cake" costs over $200. What is a "Smash Cake", you might ask, as I did? It is a cake you buy for a baby/toddler that they get all to themselves to smash with their hands and destroy. My friend is a professional baker and cake decorator, and he gets asked to make these elaborate "Smash Cakes", that don't even get eaten! It's a crazy world.........

Oh my. I could never spend that much on something for a baby/toddler's party. We use cupcakes for his very own 'smash cake.'

However, I have always said that I don't blame anyone that does spend money on ridiculous things. Me spending 200 is equivalent to them spending 10,000. I won't have a dent in my pocket for spending that much, and neither will they.
My son was thrilled to go to a paint party today. And another subject my daughter who is turning 16 next summer thought it was LAW that parents buy them their first car. 8O I laught so hard I thought I was going to pee myself. Not this family, I told her to phone her papa and tell him I am still waiting for mine.
