Lactol.

When we first visited our new puppy the breeder said she was having Lactol (powdered milk substitute) and she would need it when she got home to us. So she has been having James Wellbeloved puppy kibble and lactol before she went to bed. Of course when we picked her up the breeder said she hadnt been having Lactol for 3 days but she liked it so as I had bought a tin I have been using it. Now my question is can I now give her cows milk before she goes to bed, full cream I suppose? She really does like her drink of milk. I am a bit loathe to pay out for another tin of Lactol if I dont have to.
Last night hubby was in the kitchen and made himself some cereal for supper. He heard Summer behind him and there she stood with her feeding dish in her mouth waiting. So she had rice krispies as well. The milk I use all the while is skimmed which isnt much good for her.

As far as I know, once a puppy is weaned, they no longer need milk in any form. At least that is what they tell us here in the States. :) I also thought that weaned dogs can't digest dairy (cow's milk), so my vet has always discouraged us from giving milk or cheese, or we risk a tummy upset and all the fun that entails.

Anyone else have any thoughts?

The lactose in cows milk can cause diarrhea in some dogs, there can be quite an intolerance there to lactose in dairy and if that happens well runny poops everywhere. :?

If she is on a good quality growth kibble she really does not need a milk substitute now.

If you want to still give her a warm drink of milk before bed then stick to one that is specifically made for dogs or otherwise you run the risk of upsetting the system there.

Go to a good pet shop, there is alternatives to Lactol that might be not so expensive so she can still enjoy her milk without breaking the purse.

My girls still have a milk drink on occassions, they love there milkies too.
I agree... once a healthy pup is completely weaned there should be no real "need" for milk. A premium puppy food probably has more calories and is better balanced for a growing pup.

I've heard of breeders in the USA supplementing nursing pups with goat's milk or a goat's milk formula when a litter is large or if pups need to be hand raised for any reason. But this is after they've gotten the first milk or colostrum from the mother and before they've been weaned.
That's what my girls have Goats Milk, brie and the litter she came from were supplemented with it as momma could not keep up the milk bar supply there with the big litter.

They still like a drink of it occassionally, Kelsey is 12 1/2 and loves it, Brie still likes it, but it is not the main part of the diet either, just a treat now and then.

All three of mine from Kaye drank fresh goat's milk... Kaytee I believe was raised almost entirely on it because she couldn't suckle (the cleft palate thing). And Emma and Darby came from a large litter. I bet they'd still like some if I could find me a goat :D I do supplement their diet with human foods it's just that regular cow's milk might give a young pup scours aka diarrhea. :(

I came across a puppy formula recipe the other day that recommends a goat's milk base. It's from the Leerburg site (they breed/train GSDs for police, security, protection) and it's said to be a good one but of course I've never tried it  But they've raised 350 litters of pups and fine tuned the formula on orphaned or sick pups. A vet would need to be consulted prior to feeding it to make sure it's appropriate.

Oops... I forgot to include the link! Here it is...
