Potty location choice

Ok, this is a somewhat odd question...but somebody on this forum always has an idea or two for any problem, so here goes :?

As those who have read my other recent posts know, We just spent 2 weeks at a large outdoor fair with our dogs. We have NEVER in the many years we have done this show had this kind of problem before, but due to one irresponsible dog owner, many of our fellow fair vendors/campers went on an anti-dog campaign this year :(

The problem had to do with dogs going pee/poo in the shared field behind our booths/camping areas. We have ALWAYS cleaned up instantly, and tried to be very careful about keeping clear of other peoples campsites, but this irresponsible dog owner did not, and I, as the only other owner of large dogs in our area, got much of the flack. He let his dog out after dark, when no one would see, whereas we were quite visible, as we take Abby out frequently due to some incontinence issues.

Having gotten VERY fed up with being constantly confronted and yelled at, Ive decided that next year we need to train our dogs to only go in a very specific area right by our campsite....the problem is, that they really dont want to go there! The dogs seem to (understandably) feel that that would constitute soiling their den area, and they stubbornly insist on wanting to cross the field and go there. The area they usually go isnt near anyones campsite, but it IS close to the food vendor's water hoses, and that was one of the things they were freaking out over  .

Sorry...didnt mean to have this devolve into a rant  ....anyhow....any suggestions on how to train my dogs to go EXACTLY where I want? Enzymes? Collecting some of their pee and "seeding"? :?

I saw a potty-training spray in the pet store that is supposed to help mark an area and make the dogs want to pee there... I forgot what is was called, but perhaps that could help?

I had a friend who made a frame with a screen at the bottom (the frame hight was about 2 inches), and laid sod inside the fram to make a little portable pee box. You could put it where they normally go at home and take it with you, although i am not sure about the best way to transport it, as my friend would just move it around to different places in their yard.
I completely understand why people get disgusted when dog doo is left
all over... especially if you step in it. I've felt the same way.

Then too, I've had people give me that accusatory glare and I tell them
it wasn't MY dog and show them the bags I carry to clean up.

It's not a pleasant feeling to be wrongly accused when you try so hard to be
conscientious. Sigh. You might try going to the festival people and tell
them that you're responsible about cleaning up after your dogs and always
will be. At least they'll know and possibly be able to diffuse any rumors.

I've often thought of making up a t-shirt for the dogs that says...
My dog,
MY poop.
And I clean it up!

I'd probably be banned from the festivities.

If you have any males you take use a pee-post at home then take it with you. The others might decide it's the spot to use too.

I've got all girls so I can't tell you how well it works :?
LOL... that would be a cool T-shirt.

sometimes being banned can be good fun
The breeder that we're getting Nanny from says she teaches the puppies to go on cedar shavings in a certain area of their sectioned off crates. She says, if you want, you can basically train them to go potty within a 3 square foot location. Obviously, I haven't tried it yet, but I was going to try and teach Nanny to go in a particular spot in the yard.

Maybe if you start training them to go in a particular area now, and associate something with the spot (cedar shavings?), you can help them feel comfortable going where you want them to at the campsite by placing the same association item there. And maybe if you help them feel that their "den" area is somewhere away from that spot, they'll be more compliant.

Again, I have no idea if that will work. I've been lucky with the potty training so far, since I just have a cat. (And I had a potty-trained rabbit once, but he taught himself. He ate my mom's potted plant and then only would go in the pot.) I can let you know in a few months how it's going with Nanny.
Hi I don't have any suggestions..but I do feel for you.
Take a pee pole that is a garden stake or something like that and put it in your yard and take the boys over and get them to cock the leg there. Do it on the lead with both of them firstly till they get the idea. They usually like to mark in the same area. Then they should later on just go to that area in the yard automatically to potty.

Then when away just a matter of taking a stake, putting it in an area that you can use for pottying the dogs and they should be use to pottying in that one area around the stake then.

It works the good ol Pee Pole.

Jaci I think you would make a fortune with those t-shirts Big bold writing on them
The pee post is something I think we might try, and 1st time oes mommy's idea about cedar shavings is a good one too! :D

We did go to the organizers and explained that it wasn't our dogs, and they said they actually knew that, since we had been there for years with no complaints till now. The vendor coordinator even offered to post a note in the daily newsletter stating that it wasn't us....but I found that idea way too embarrassing   My husband partially solved the problem by going to the biggest, most loud-mouthed gossip on the grounds and telling her the whole story, after helping her fix her internet connection! :P

That's a good way to spread the news.
Teach him to go potty on cue. To do this you take him on leash, and whne he starts to go potty you say "go pee" or whatever word you want to use, and give him a treat while he is going. Do this over and over, then start to say "go pee" or whatever, right when he starts, and give him a treat. Do this over and over, and then you can start just saying the word and he will go...Like Pavlov's dog.... Practice different places for the next few months. Next year he will be ready as he will potty when and where you want him to.

Good luck!
