Pet Insurance Con's and Pro's

I would love to let everyone know that VPI pet insurance is not the best insurance on the market these day's. They do not cover what they say they cover and they change the policys with out your knoweldge.
I was cover for one year with them, most of the things I needed was covered, but at $50.00 each time for deductible my owners were hurting.
Good example of what my owner is talking about:
Heartworm test $15.00
Comprehensive Health Panel $83.00
Neuter $ 236.59
Ineligible services $ 4.48 ( Heartworm med's)

Grand total $ 339.07

owner was paid $65.00

So out of pocket expense is more than what you get back,

Well I am sick now and this company canceled my insurance, but my owner has found me another insurance company that has the coverage I need to get well. :)

It might cost a little more, but the out of pocket expense will be less.

you compare for your self my owner is leaving a web site for all that would like to look at it and compare. Do your homework before applying for insurance.

This is one comapny that the McHerny animal hosptial in IL offers pet insurance and they are compared to VPI, Which mind you are the lowest rated comapny for dog insurance.

I liked the SPCA plans too. :D

Just to clarify... your SPCA policy was in effect prior to this illness? It appears the plan does NOT cover illnesses that present themselves within the first 30 days of the policy's effective date and preexisting conditions are excluded as are congenital defects. It's the same with most if not all insurance plans.

At a glance, the policies appear to be 80/20's meaning 80% of the covered services are reimbursed... the policyholder pays 20% plus the annual $100 deductible (always look for a policy with an annual deductible rather than a deductible that applies "per incident"). And read the exclusions... this policy of course has them too... note the word "some" is used here...

If anyone is considering insurance, it's always best to get it while a dog is young or at least healthy and before any conditions present themselves. Be sure to completely disclose all prior illnesses/injuries or you risk denial of a claim (or worse- insurance fraud).

4 out of 6 of mine have insurance but it was taken out with other companies about 4 years ago... two have congenital defects that make them uninsurable.

I hope your baby will be well soon.
I have reservations about the neutrality of this post...

I just want to make it clear to anyone reading this the necessary steps that are most likely required in order to get reimbursement. I may have missed an important step or two and am no longer licensed (was it really 25 years ago? 8O ) so ask questions before you buy not after.

It AIN'T going to happen in this order.
1. Dog gets sick.
2. I buy insurance.
3. I get reimbursed.

But it should happen in this order...
1. I buy insurance disclosing all preexisting conditions and pay the premiums on time.
2. Dog gets sick and it's a covered, non-excluded condition and it happens when the policy is in effect but after any imposed waiting period.
3. I get reimbursed.

I actually have had great luck with VPI. Many of you read my thread back in June when I was going through the surgeries and then unfortunate death of Georgie Porgie. Having two surgeries in 24 hours, as you can imagine, is very expensive. It did take awhile with VPI, but just yesterday I finally received my checks. The first claim I submitted was from his initial surgery with the regular vet and they paid me about 75% of the total amount. The second claim was from the emergency vet and they paid about 40% of that. I was pleasantly surprised with that because I wasn't expecting much seeing as how it was exploratory surgery the second time. I have already purchased VPI insurance for my new OES Harriet and I will definately keep it up. In my case, it was certainly worth it. Just wanted to put in my two cents. :D
I'm thinking the reason the claim in the original post wasn't paid is because the care provided was considered "wellness" care and not care required due to an illness or injury. It was probably specifically excluded from the policy. A policy must specifically include spay/neuter and wellness care in order for it to pay on them.
what about Canada?
well folks I am home with my owners, and still under the weather but doing better.

My owner did buy the first insurance when I was a puppy, with a pre-existing condition, which they knew I had.

The point that my owner's where making Ron was that VPI payments are base off fee Schedual

Ok off to bed I go. My owners are sleepy, So for the spelling error I am only 1yr old. and feeling sick.

My owner and I were not happy with the insurance or how they pay for wellness care.

So for all the owners out they, you want the best for us please do your homework and compare apples to pears.

Good nite all
Please don't think I was picking on you... it's just this needed to be clarified. I've had people say to me that their dog is sick or hurt and they're checking into a policy to cover the cost of treatment but it's way too late for a policy to cover the current condition.

We spent over $15,000 with the vet last year (that's NOT a typo 8O  ). This year promises to be a big year too  ...

January: One histiocytoma (benign) removed.
http://oesusa.com/Page94.html

February: One bladder defect surgically corrected, then emergency surgery the next morning when the sutures failed.
http://oesusa.com/Page97.html

March: One ear suture and benign lumps removed.
http://oesusa.com/Page101.html

June: One benign lump removed and teeth cleaning.
http://oesusa.com/Page108.html

June: Removal of 5 growths that turned out to be benign.
http://oesusa.com/Page111.html

Hoping we got the pack on the right track... especially Pandi-PP. Our vets always try to to be very accommodating and squeeze us in.

Emma's surgery in June was $906.15 and we were reimbursed $624.92 last week from the AKC insurance policy... a $125 deductible and the 20% copay. Two girls have "defects" that made them uninsurable (cleft palate, harelip, blind or hip dysplasia, congenital bladder defect).

If I were to get insurance again for another dog I think I'd seriously consider the SPCA's plan... I too think it's a good plan if people can afford the premiums. I had received something in the mail from them earlier this year so was familiar with it.

I hope Otis will be better soon.
I found one (Canada) for 2 dogs $65 monthly vet cost $20,000 for the life of 1 pet. Wondering if that is good?
hey I heard that you might be able to get free health care in Canada!!!!
The humans do I think.

J/K..... good luck in your search.
Thank you Jaci and the herd, I am feeling better, I return from the hosptial last night and gave my owner a big hug and lot's of wet kisses, I think I gave him a bath with out soap....LOL. Well i had a small tummy soreness last night, but this morning it went away, must be the meds I am getting ewwww.

Well off to bed I need my rest will check in again soon.

WE have to pay a monthly health care but lots is covered. If real ill (cancer etc) ya gotta pay extra. If lucky you work for companys that you pay into and so do they extra insurance. Hmmm I pay $88 for Alberta health care and I would have to pay $65 for my 2 dogs just does not seem fair.
I have pet insurance thru the AKC. A free trial was offered when I first registered my new pup...of course I didn't do it and of course needed it within the first few months of him home with me

Anyway, I now have it. they offer different plans for different amounts each month. I went with the middle ground that covers the more expensive things and not so much the well care. It covers meds, diagnostic tests and doctor visits but not annual shots, heartworm and any preexisting condition. I just submitted a claim of over 6 hundred dollars so I'll let you know how good it is then!
