Tatoos

This morning I got up at 3:00 to drive my daughter to Charleston for her return flight to Utah. We have had a delightful week together, the best in years (some of you may remember the stress and tension of those "Christmas" visits). I've decided that I'm not going to encourage her to come home for Christmas anymore, it's just too stressful to share her with other family & friends. Here at the beach we get to spend quality time together without all the other "stuff".

She LOVES Utah so I expect she'll be staying there for some time. We are already making plans for next summer.

Only one thing happened that caused any difficulties. This is the first time in 3 years I have seen my daughter in "warm" (bathingsuit) weather. I discovered to my HORROR that she has spent a considerable amount of time and money aquiring tatoos on her back and legs.

I don't mean a small butterfly or rose here and there but an picture covering her entire back and thigh. I was devasted and not just a little nauseous. I knew at Christmas time that she had a tatoo but I didn't want to see it so did not know it's extent.

She thinks they are "artwork" and claims that since they are confined to her back and uper thigh that she will always be able to keep them covered when necessary. I think they are horrific and still cannot wrap my mind around my beautiful daughter defacing herself in such a way.

So I guess my question is, does anyone else have a tatoo addicted child?
Respond to this topic here on forum.oes.org
I don't call mine addicted, but both my girls have tatoos.

Lisa has a butterfly and words (forgot what they are - they are in Latin) that are in the small of her back. Mostly black, with a few muted colors. Sizewise, I think it's about 8" square. She had the butterfly 1st, added the words a few yrs later.

LeAnne has a set of 3 colored shooting stars with "fairy dust" trailing behind them - on her left foot. On the top outer side. Hers are smaller, about 5" or so. Our family doctor commented - "that's a tatoo even a mother can love"! - and made us all laugh!

They got theirs when they were 18 and in college. Son Travis wants one, but hasn't done one yet. He's 20 this month.
I have a tattoo addicted husband, does that count? He is not covered with them, four on one arm, two on the other, our son's name across his shoulder blades. He wants more, both arms to just above the elbow, which he's almost there already. He also wants a grim reaper we found on his ribs (ouch). None on his legs, he doesnt think they look right on guys legs, maybe on the back of the calf, but thats about it. Also wants to fill in his back.......he's my little freak, what can I say. Maybe its an army thing.....but then again, I see lots of tattoos everywhere now days. I on the other hand have none. I don't have any areas on my body that I want to draw the extra attention to. Now don't get me wrong, I've seen some very pretty flash (the tattoo drawings), but I'd rather have it put on a t-shirt! Maybe I am just overly self-consious (I know I am for a fact, lol.) I won't say what else my hubby has done, but lets just say, the men would say OUCH! 8O He is really into art, and says the tattoo and such are artwork and self expression. I just don't get it. But he's not hurting anyone other than himself. I don't really like all the tattoos, but he does, and I love him with all my heart. Just remember, under all that ink, your daughter is still there and love her just the same as always.
Hi, my husband has them all over except on his legs. For the longest time while we were dating he would wear long sleave shirts when we would go to my parents house. Finally my mom said ok I know you have them let's see them - so he took off his shirt and my mom said wow 8O
He told her that one day you won't even see them. It's true, she see's him for him and not what he has all over his body. I know it's a shock to see them on your daughter for the first time. I too have tatoo's now and no-one knows about them because you can't see them but I know they are there. I got them when I was 35 and my husband was with me. (my mom does know about the 1 I have.) She loves wearing the temperary tatoo's. Next time you see your daughter get some temperary tatoos she would get a kick out of it
I have never had anything that Ive wanted to look at forever....I mean I go thru shoes, fabric, hair color, etc...way to fast.... the only thing id even consider is the little ralph lauren polo guy....that size 8) and to me its just not worth it......

i understand your pain Ginny, when collie had her ears double pierced, I had a cow.....I cant imagine BIG tatoos....im just too conservative....

just remember though, its not your body and as beautiful as you know your daughter is, its her choice...and remember also to pick your battles...whats done is done....move on and refrain from commenting to her any further....she KNOWS you hate it!
It's hard ginny, my hubby has them on his arms (done as a teenager) and now older he hates them. Covers them for work etc now.

My sons wanted them and there dad talked them out of it, both sons have an ear pierced, I can cope with that as you can always take them out.

A tattoo is for life and as you get older and do not have the same muscle tone you did younger (I suppose you call it more wrinkles :P ) they never look as good then, they fade too and just not the same on you as when you were younger.

See what your daughter thinks of them in her 40's plus

It could be worse, they could be into drugs, booze and a bad crowd of friends, it a tatt is the worse they can do, well no comment from you, she is the one that has to grow older with them on her body permantly.
I think the worst part is that we just spent a week on a very conservative beach in SC....... her "artwork" brought ALOT of stares and many comments. I was embarressed. My daughter is a very pretty girl and I just don't "get it".

Luckily I was able to convince her to keep her T shirt on when we came back to the house, my 85 year old Father would NEVER understand. But I could tell she was pretty annoyed at having to do that.
I have to ditto Darcy's comments here. its your daughters choice, she might regret it when she's older she might not. its her body and as much as you don't like it, thats something you need to let drop for you own sanity really lol So I'm guessing that people weren't really staring too much, just the fact that you didn't like it and felt a little embarassed ? Sure everyone will have a look, but they might be looking thinking oh how nice. For a laugh go get yourself a stick on tattoo and show your daughter, you'll have a laugh about it.
I don't have any children. But I dislike tattos intensely. I see them as a disfigurement. Yeah, when you're 20 you think they're cool, but I bet the majority of women will regret them as they get older.
I personally love tatoos...just not on me.

I think some of them are wonderful pieces of art and since most of them have a sentimental meaning so they will live with that bond.

I can't wait to see aging grandmothers with full sleeves of tatoos though.
I don't care for them personally, but I have the image of my uncle, when he passed away, with those 40 year old tatoos that were so faded & blurred together that you couldn't even tell what they were or one from another, burned into my psyche. It's just not pretty.
VerveUp wrote:

With any luck I won't be around to see what her "grandmother" tats look like
OK,OK.. I have afew small ones. On the top left arm is a small 4 leaft clover,a butterfly, and the name my hubby has called me for 30 years, BABE.
Also on left breast low in the cleavage so not seen unless I have something very low cut on is a white single rose. AND YES I am a grandmother and great grandmother. They still look OK.
The clover is for my birthday on saint paddys day, the butterfly is when I was younger I would flutter around so much my hubby said I look like a butterfly.
i have 5, including a big one on my back. i wore a strapless dress to a wedding last week (showing all 5) and my mom made me show every single relative. my brother has a full sleeve on one arm and a half sleeve on another. my sister has 2 small ones.

i already have my next 3 planned!
Did you know they are trying to outlaw dog tatooing...?

I guess some feel that it is a disfigurement and a painful thing to put the animals through.

I was thinking of having Mulligan shaved down and have a really cool tatoo of a big bowl of dinner done on his right shoulder, and a nice tat of Joan on the left.
You go OES MOMMY!!!! As I said earlier, my hubby has several, and I have none, but I have considered it. It would have to be something really special...probably something I'd draw myself, or hubby could draw for me. The idea that has always been in my head is a frog sitting on a lilypad, catching a fly with its tongue, but the fly is really initials.....TJ2 ( it would look like TJ squared, like in math class) because those are my hubby's and my son's initials. I would have to really really think about it though. My biggest fear is that I'd be allergic to the ink. 8O I'm a freak as it is, I am allergic to silver....really makes the dr's look at you funny! Tasker's Mom, please remember, it really doesn't matter what anyone else thinks. Especially strangers. They are just people you will probably never see again, and they never knew you in the first place. It's taken me a while to get over worrying about what people think. I still have problems with it. If someone stares at your daughter, or mutters a comment, just look at them and give them the biggest smile you can possibly give. You are proud of your daughter, and her tattoos are a part of her. If the comment really upsets you, though, you can always use my favorite hand signal, especially when driving.....let the birdie fly......just kidding.....sorta..... :P
I am in the conservative corner here as well. And I am in complete agreement with Darcy about the permancy issue. IF these same young people getting tatoos were told they would have to wear the same earings or hairstyle for the rest of their life they would pitch a fit YET they will permanently mark up their body. Go figure.

However, as stated earlier, it is too late to do anything about it now and there are worse things she could be doing.

But Ginny, I would feel the same way as you. My niece expressed a desire for one and I told her she was too pretty to need that. As far as I know that was three years ago and she has never done it. Of course I know my input had nothing to do with it - she is probably afraid of the pain.

me too
I think what the tattoo is and the quality of it make all the difference. There's no doubt in my mind that all the idiots that have Winnie the Pooh on their butt, Taz on their arm or a dolphin anklet will look at it someday and go, "Oh, man, what was I thinking?" but I think a well thought out art piece is another. As a rule, if you saw it on the wall of the tattoo shop, chances are it's cheesy and not something you should put on your body for a lifetime!

Myself, I don't have any, but I respect a well done piece on someone. On my own body, I don't think there's much I would want on me forever but I've seen some beautiful ones that sometimes make me think! I used to have tons of piercings and I liked that because I knew they could come up out at any time with minimal scarring. I can only imagine my mother if I had decided to get tattoos instead-- she cried real tears when I got piercings in my face! As a birthday gift to her one year, I told her to choose one and I'd take it out. :)

That's what I think as well. One of my older friends really regrets her tattoo... but it's of a taz on her back. I would regret that move instantly. Most of the other tattoos on the wall are like that though. I think if a tattoo has a meaning behind it someone is less likely to regret it later.

I am working on my own tattoo (I want to get it right) that incorperates my first cat, Tigger's, paw print. I'm so mean - I made him step on an ink pad hehe. I plan on putting it on the small of my back - it's pretty solid and simple. :3
Im kinda on the fence about tattoos...

On one hand, I love the idea of the body as a canvas for artwork, but on the other, Im bothered by how trendy its become.

Id be more likely to get one if it weren't so common now!
It's generational for me: when I see tatoos, I think of 2 things--make that 3 things:

1. Holocaust survivors had numbers tatooed on their arms.

2. Sailors. IMO, a good tatoo is colorful and can do something, like wiggle her hips. These tatoos often marked some special milestone.

3. Bikers.

My oldest has several tatoos. I think they are ugly. He did not get them at the high point of his life. He still likes them. I hate them. We don't talk about it. Ever.
Generational is right................ I can see it now: Today's generation is going to grow old covered with tatoos. As a form of rebellion THEIR children will remain tatooless. The parents will be sitting around years from now wondering what is wrong with these kids that they don't indulge in body art
I'll just throw my two sense in here since I am of the younger population.

Never, ever would I get a tatoo. For many of the reasons that have already been discussed. I would never approve of my husband getting a tatoo, and if I have children, would be very disappointed if they got one.
BUT, that is why we are each intitled to our own opinions.

I just figure that when I get to be 50-60, and my skin is not weathered (I also do NOT tan), I have no tats, and I don't have holes all over my body, I will be much happier with myself.
well another 2 cents in this for me. I was not a kid when I had mine done. I was 35 yrs ols. Now in my mid 60.s as I had said they are fine. I don,t have saggie skin or do they look gross. As I said they are small enough that they are not seen. Only if I have a tank top on my arm shows. Only if I wear low cut tops but I don,t do that. I have many people say to me they are very tastefull. I do not like ones that show all over your body. If you work they should be covered. How many of you have periced ears, some has more than 1 on each lope. I have and love when I wear 2 sets one small and one like a loop.
Yep, two sets of holes in my ears, thought about getting three sets and wearing red, white, and blue studs....after 9/11 I wore red and blue....also an american flag heart pin, which I still have on my denim jacket. Hubby wants to get his ear redone, a no-no in uniform, but when he's off, no one would bother him, thats one of the good things about rank, lol. As I mentioned earlier, he has one other, uhhhh, piercing...haven't gotten to "experience" that one yet, as he had it done in Arizona while he's out there for school. He'll be home in mid-September. Everyone has thier opinions about all this stuff.....we will never all agree, but that's what makes us individuals! Oh, by the way, I was against hubby's recent endeavor, but I finally said, what the hey.....if you wanna torture yourself, go for it, lol.
As someone else stated, I have no problem with others getting tattoos ...just not anyone in my immediate family. I even think some are sexy in the right place; however, as a married woman with a child(ren), I don't want the labels that go along with some of those tattoos along with regretting it later especially if I'm in a bathing suit at a company picnic.

You are too much, Ron
I love tatoos! Don't have any myself and neither do my sons but I really like them.

Granted, I did talk my son out of getting one a few years ago, said wait until he's older to choose giving the opinion that he too has changed his mind regarding styles.

The only reason he listened to me is that my friend is a jewelery designer and years ago he really wanted a FUBU gold design for a chain. 7 years earlier, we had found some gold jewlery and turned it into the police. No one claimed it and after a few months it was returned to us. We always hoped to melt it down and have it made into something else.

She wouldn't do it for him, as she told him a custom piece had to mean something to him. He was upset at her but a few months later when FUBU had somewhat gone out of style he saw what she meant. I think he thought about that when thinking about a tatoo. So he's still thinking about it...

As for me , as a 15 year old I wanted a dainty butterfly tatoo on my shoulder...now I'd have a huge tiger covering my back if I decided to do it. Thinking at my age my back would never sag...LOL!
People show me their tattoos when I'm working my art booths all the time....occasionally even needing to pop around BEHIND the booth in order to disrobe enough to do so. 8O

I often really enjoy the stories these folks tell about why they decided to get the designs they did. My personal favorite was a gray haired lady with a huge, beautiful dragon covering her entire chest and shoulders. She explained that the dragon was a symbol of longevity, and she had it done on her 50th birthday as a celebration of having survived a bout with breast cancer.
Thats a nice story ravenmoonart
Note to self: Work at booths at local art shows.

OMG. I about fell off the chair laughing! Simon had to come see what was happening! (The cat under the computer never moved) :D

Ron, shame on you! hehehehe
While I have no tatoos, I am totally fascinated by them.
Not your basic tatoo, that everyone who ever thought
they were tough has, but classy, self designed, or
significant tatoos. The process, the mental and physical
and peoples' reaction to them, the stories they bring,-
it all fascinates me. I have recently been thinking about
getting one, and Vic is horrified.

Is it going to say "oes.org"?
My son came to visit last week & casually walked in (like he usually does).
I thought I saw a huge tattoo on his upper arm, but my brain told me, "no, this can't be!" Honestly, the room started to spin & I felt nauseous :(
He does indeed have a hammerhead shark disfiguring his arm :(
I said to him, Is it real? (hoping it was not)?". He said,"Yeah, do you like it?" I said, "no it's awful!" I know it is not the worst thing that can happen, but I hate it!!!!
He is an adult (32) but still my baby!
I too agree w/ Darcy & don't like anything permanent. I never even had my ears pierced for that reason.
Maybe we should have a tattoo poll?

I ABSOLUTELY feel for you, every time I look at my daughter's I get sick to my stomach!!! (where is the puking emoticon Ron??)
I have a tattoo.... used to have 2 of them. I have a very pretty orchid on my shoulder that I drew when I was 15 (also got the tattoo at 15), and it has not faded at all (probably because it is usually covered). I had a second tattoo that went across my forearm (from my inner elbow to my wrist), but I later had it removed. I liked it at the time, but later realized it was really UGLY, and I would have a hard time living in the professional world with it. I was debating having it removed by a lazer (which was extremely expensive and would be very painful and take years since it was a black ink tat), but ended up needing surgery on my arm (old pins from an old break were migrating and needed to be removed). So I asked the doctor to simply cut the tattoo out, and he did. So now I have a very long jagged scar down my forearm (I would have it anyway from the surgery, but it had to be lengthened 2 inches on either side to get all the tattoo).

It's a good lesson for my children. Hopefully they will realize that just because something looks really cool now, doesn't mean it will later. And with so many cool temporary tattoos, I don't see why they would opt for anything permanent (at least not in an openly visible place). I must admit though, I do love the tattoo on my shoulder. Even when I get old and wrinkly, the colors will look pretty, lol.
If there is an "up" side it's that my daughters tatoo is confined to her back (the entire back  ) and one thigh so she can easily cover it. She is in school to be a teacher so at least thought THAT one through!!!!
I have 2 tattoos that signify something in my life. One is of my 10 year old daughters name "Brianna" on my right ankle. I got this when I gave custody of her to my father at a very young age. I made the best decision for her and she still knows me as "Mommy Courtney" and is blessed to have 2 mommy's really. Needless to say I got this tattoo to signify the neverending love I have for her and everytime I shower or put my shoes on I am reminded of what a beautiful and intelligent woman she is growing up to be and that that wouldnt have been possible if I would have been selfish.

The other is on my right shoulder and I got that right after my divorce....it is of a heart painted as a conferedate flag to represent my upbringing (no I am not racist but very proud to be southern) and it has a yellow rose going through it that is dripping blood to symbolize that bestfriend that I lost when our divorce was final. I know that sounds weird but this was not a divorce that I wanted and tried to stop it with everything that I have. I still care for this man very much to this day. It also says "Redneck" above it and "Girl" below it as that is what my nickname has been since I was knee-high to a grasshopper. I have a belt that says "redneck girl" and I also have a "redneck" sticker on the windshield of my car.

I want more YES but do not know at this point what to get and would definitly have to stratigically place them as that is important to me. As a 28 year old single mom I dont know what the future holds and if one day I by chance marry a doctor or lawyer or politician or whathaveyou and am expected to attend formal dinners and dances and other functions I need to know that they will be well covered by my gown to present me in a conservative manner. I think it looks tacky when I see these girls at military balls with their strapless gowns and ink visible to everyone. I always think to myself "How awful...what were they thinking?" So until I can think of something meaningful and somewhere hidable to put another I will just stick with the 2 I have now.

I myself would much rather my son grow up and be fascinated with ink than have a hole in his lip or nose or eyebrow for that matter. At least then I will know he can go through a metal detector at the airport to come and visit his mammas....lol.
In High School I brought my friend to get a tattoo, she was only 17, but I vouched for her that she was 18. She got a butterfly below her bikini line. I don't know if her parent's even saw it, but it was something she could totally hide. I just hope if she had kids that she did have a c-section or the butterfly would be severely scarred. 8O
I wanted one, but took it as a very serious thing. I knew it had to be something I would be proud to have my entire life. My indecisiveness kept me from getting one.

My Best Friend has quite a few and I don't like any of them.
She got the first one to commemorate her Father. He would have killed her if he was still alive and got one and I'm sure spun in his grave quite a few times. That one was followed by a whole bunch of others, ladybugs, orchids, tribal stuff  . The colored ones look awful, the colors faded so quickly and they look old.
Billy has two very small ones. One he did (with a guitar string!! 8O ) his nickname on his forearm with his Uncle's help. Then he did a small cross on his hand which I still don't understand as he has never in his life been to Church. He wanted this HUGE thing on his back of a creature ripping it's way through his skin, to signify his inner demons.
I think he passed that phase though..... luckily. Now he wants to get one of Hayley's face, so he can capture what she looked like as a little girl. I'm not totally against this one and it won't be in color.

My dopey ex-husband wanted to get a Bugs Bunny because he loved Bugs Bunny. I kept telling him I was against it and it would make me sick. He agreed not to get one. Well he ended up with his cousin one day and took his cousin to get his tattoo retouched to add more color. They ended up getting drunk and his cousin said he would pay if he wanted one. They didn't have Bugs Bunny so he settled for what they had (which is so stupid, you should never settle for something....especially if it's going to be with you forever) so he has a Tasmanian Devil on his man boob.
It looks so stupid.
Quote:

You always have funny stories, Elissa!

I find myself frequently in awe of tattoos and other times grossed out. I think I'm grossed out more at the thought of a continuous needle poking in my skin. I'm very sensitive to pain and almost passed out from acupuncture. One little need stick is okay with me, but then the thought...

I wonder what the guy we hung out with in high school thinks of his tattoo today of Garfield smoking a joint

Oh yea, no tattoos over here.
My oldest and dearest fried is a fabulous artist, and designed her own tattoos when we were in college. They were beautiful scroll-work that kind of flowed around her navel, over to each hip and slightly down each thigh. (Think....stylized "heart". )

When we were 22, and she was a size 3, they really were beautiful.

And later in life, she went on to have 4 kids. FYI - and this is important: let's just say that stretch marks don't mesh well with tattoos, and once tattooed skin is stretched, it doesn't ever go back to what it was originally. 8O

So now there's this grey and black, shriveled, undefined mess all over her, and it is very unattractive.

So any consideration for tattoos must be made with many factors in mind!

Also, I've been an HR Director for 15 years. I can't tell you the number of candidates I've turned down just due to visible tattoos. The "public" might be more accepting, but Corporate America is not.
By the way, my oldest, dearest is a friend. Not a fried.

Spellcheck is a blessing and a curse.
Well, after 4 kids I'd be FRIED
I watch my husband cringe when a women walks by with tatoos. Saturday he said, "Tatoos make a pretty woman look cheap, an average woman look low class and an ugly woman look even uglier."

When I asked about men's tatoos, he shrugged and said, "Stupid, vain."

The only body art I have agreed with was a man who's arms were burned by gasoline as a child. His scars were less visible with the tats and his self confidence was enhanced. Normally very shy, he beamed when I asked to see his tats even though inside I was cringing.
There was just a piece on tatoos on the abc news this evening. It said that 1 out of every 3 18 to 20 somethings now have a tatoo. It also said that 85% of emplyers view them as a "negative".
I haven't found a picture that I like enough to hang on a wall in my home for 50 years, guaranteed I won't put art on my body and look at it for a lifetime.

My oldest son loves tattoo. It all started when he turned 18 and didn't need my signature to have a tattoo. Two day's after his birthday, he took a wad of money and went to Boulder Ink to be permanently marked. I was pleasantly surprised when he returned home with a stunning Koi on his let shoulder blade. The colors and the design were remarkable. I conceded it was tasteful and beautiful. I should have kept my mouth shut.

My son, my beautiful baby, didn't stop with his first work of art. He has taken a fascination with Maori tattoos. I'm sure it's beautiful and meaningful to the Maori, but it looks like a Rorschach ink blot test to me. His right arm is complete and the nasty stuff is now migrating to his neck (beneath his collar line, he has to work in Utah).

He asks me what I think each time he adds a few spots. My silence seems to convey my disapproval. He's a man now; it's his body to manage. It's one of those things where I say to myself, I want to be a fly on the wall when one of his kids decides to do something so utterly boneheaded.

If you get a chance find the clip from Saturday Night Live called Turlingtons Tattoo Remover. Any women considering a "tramp stamp" will change their mind. Everyone else will have a good laugh.
What is it Robin Williams said, "...get a barb wire tatoo (don't know the accepted name) on your upper arm and in (some number of years) it becomes a picket fence."

I was never particularily interested in going through the pain of getting one, plus I'm sure I'd tire of it. But the one thing that absolutely made the decision against tatoo's was a really ugly sight I'll never forget. About 20 years ago I was working a night shift in a busy ER and a 74 year old lady came in in cardiac arrest. She had a large yellow rose with stem on her left breast and over the years the rose had definitely....lets say wilted, not to mention the sagging :lmt:

Ooooooh, I really like that one!!!! (says the Scientist)
The rooster is not necessarily symbolic, but it does mark my passion for animal rights and my goal of getting these beautiful animals some legal recognition.

And yes- the one on my wrist hurt the most!
I'll try to dig up pictures of my favorite tattoo later. (unless you all have had enough!)
By all means keep 'em coming. I'm starting to feel better about MY DAUGHTER and her all encompassing WILLOW TREE
I have to say that the rooster is pretty, Heather. :D
And if it weren't for the fact that they're PERMANENT, I'd be all for it. Temporary body art - no problem here. But, I just can't get past the aging factor. :?
