Ice cubes...are they good or bad?

Rheba likes to eat ice cubes. She used to only play with them but now that we are in the middle of the summer, she loves to eat them...go figure! I've always heard that ice isn't good to chew on for humans because it can crack the enamel of our teeth. Is it the same for dogs? I know that tons of people give their doggies ice and many love the treat. Is it good for them to eat something that is that cold? Is it good for them or bad?
Sorry if this is a stupid question. It was just a thought that crossed my mind.

I used to give George ice cubes when he was teething!

He still loves to get one now and chew on it!

I don't know if it does any harm I hadn't really thought about it!

It doesn't seem to do him any harm!
I wouldn't go overboard but I think they're fine for the occasional treat. Clyde loves ice but in the last year, we had to start being careful when he gets it because it makes him throw up if he has a cube too quickly after a meal. The cold shock to the tummy can make them hurl!
Callie absolutely LOVES ice cubes. That is her all-time favorite treat. She can be in the other end of the house, but if she hears me open the cabinet to get out a glass, she runs and sits in front of the freezer waiting (too smart for her own good, really). We've never gotten in the habit of giving her doggie treats, so she thinks ice cubes and carrots are the best treats ever! And they're healthy!

I hadn't really thought about the possibility of ice cubes being bad for their teeth - Callie just turned 3, and she's never had a problem with them... but I guess it might be possible to crack a tooth on an ice cube.
I agree with Jill. Ice cubes were Maggie's all time favorite treat but then she started puking them up...it's so sad to see her run to the fridge when she hears someone getting ice and now she can't have any...
I hope they are not too bad for them since I have a really bad boy named JUNIOR who manages to jump up just enough to hit the ice dispenser on the door of the fridge and make them come out all over the place.

It drives us crazy ! The worst is when my daughter leaves it on crushed ice and Junior just makes it all hit the floor but does not want it unless it is BIG CUBES so I get little cold puddles .... 8O

I keep telling Junior God made him so cute so I could not stay mad at him too long........

I give our guys cubes all the time. I have
never had a problem with chucking, but I can
imagine it - if my dogs were hot enough.

As for the teeth, I would have to guess that their
teeth enamel is generally tougher than ours, just
because there is no way I could grind on a hard
bone like my dogs do without breaking teeth.

I don't think cubes would be any more damaging
than bones would they?

Shellie
I guess as long as they are an occasional treat, it will be fine. If you can break a bone in two with your teeth, I don't think ice is a challenge. Lennon, Sofa and now Marielena too 8O love them.

Do you know if eating too much can give sheepies a brain freeze?

lol, how would you ever know!!
If they bring one paw to their forehead... they got brain freeze!
We had a sheepie that absolutely loved them. But she would throw up a little while after eating them. Took us a long time to discover she was throwing up due to the ice cubes. But she sure did like them, had to stop giving them to her once we realized.

Cold seedless watermelon is very refreshing for them. Not the rhine just the red part.
I just read an article about ice cubes and dogs...If the dog is overheated it is not recommended to give ice cubes or ice cold water. Give water definately, just not ice water and give a small amount at a time. Don't give the dog a whole bowl of water at once. They could and probably will threw it up.

My dog also threw up after eating a few ice cubes. Now I give him one and he's okay with it. Everything in moderation!
I agree about the caution of ice or ice cold water for an overheated dog.

Mine love ice cubes and normally don't have problems with it. Merlin, when he was in his last year or so, couldn't handle ice anymore, which was sad, because he loved it. But it made him puke.
I do have to say that I am happy that Rheba hasn't learned how to hit the lever for the ice maker. That would require energy....her lazy gene takes over when energy is required. She seem to like them more and more everyday. I have been giving them to her when she is pretty cool. Never after coming from the outside.
At this time of the year, she can't handle being outside for more than a few minutes...Florida wasn't made to enjoy the outdoors in August. Florida more closely resemebles hell lately! It's been horribly hot.
I have been treating ice cubes like treats. She seems to get more excited about them if I make it a big deal. Like mentioned earlier, carrots and ice cubes are great treats.
Very true about ice cubes and overheat.... not a good idea. Our guys don't even drink water when they come outside from exercise until they have cooled down, it's odd how they know they don't have to do that by themselves. Sofa trows up if she drinks water too fast, so she's learned to wait. Cubes are great for treats tough! I'm glad they haven't figured out the ice maker on the fridge yet!
Yuki hated ice cubes for the longest time. I don't blame her ...its no beef jerky. ...but when she wasn't given anything but her dog food, they became her favorite thing! Like others, she will run like hell to the fridge if she hears ice coming out!
