Couple of questions

:D Hi! We just got our first OES in April and had a few questions. First...how big do the males typically get? I read anywhere from 60-100 lbs., so that confused me a bit. Ben is 5 months old and weighs about 45 lbs. now. Also....when does the coat start to turn gray? He is still quite black...which I am fine with-still looks like a big panda bear! Do they ever stay black and white? Annnnndddd.....finally question #3. Is there any way to keep his little puppy mouth from turning reddish brown? Something about some sort of fungus in the saliva. Of course there have been a couple of times when one of my kiddos leave their Chefboyardee mini raviolis out and he has a red moustache for three days! I know, it's vain of me, but it would be nice to keep hiim a little whiter around the muzzle. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Hi! Welcome to the forum! I'm glad you found us.

Sounds to me like he's going to be closer to 100 pounds! My big guy was 106 (probably should have been 95-100). I've fostered one that was about 70 and my current guy is around 86-88.

I think they will change color with their blowout? It's between 5 and 9 months I believe. I'm not certain, someone will surely correct me.

And wipe that face! Keep his drinking water fresh, wipe it when he drinks and wipe it often if it's wet. There are whitening shampoos that work well.

I don't know if puppy hair differs in it's anti-staining abilities from adult hair.

Limiting the Chef Boyardee is good for lots of reasons!!!

Welcome!
yes, I try to limit his intake of chefboyardee and poptarts, but he has a knack for finding hidden food in the kids room....he's actually better at it than I am! LOL. Thanks for all the great info. So far, Ben has been the best pup we have ever had (housebreaking issues aside, that is). Only thing I have noticed is he is scared of men-all of them except for my husband. By scared I mean VERY scared. Kind of a new thing...makes me wonder a little. Took him to a male groomer and ever since then he has been freakishly afraid of all men. Or maybe he's just a ladie's man-pimpalicious!
Hi and welcome! A bluing shampoo works wonders for the white parts!! Also, if youre in between washings, I use a dove facial cloth on panda...the kind that you have to wet....then wet again with a clean wet cloth....it does lather pretty good.....so make sure to get alll of the soap out.

I also keep pandas mouth hair clipped, if i see any brown streaks, I cut them out....
Welcome to the forum! :D

My boy had turned almost completely gray by 1 year, but it can vary...they also go through a second change from light gray (junior) to a darker adult coat.

I love your jewelery by the way 8) !
Thanks again for all the great responses! And thanks for checking out my jewelry site, raven! Working at home lets me spend more time at home with my sheepie...oh, and the kids of course!!!
Hi welcome to the forum and sending Hi's from the land downunder. :D

Coats change twice from a puppy to a junior coat which is usually the light grey, then again to a mature coat. Knotty times ahead with the coat transitions.

There is a few whitening shampoos on the market to help keep the whites white. Always try and keep the beard dry, dry with a towel after drinking or eating. If they are dribbly then harder to keep beards white.
Hi welcome, I cut the hair around my dog Shamu
Sorry I mean around her mouth
My Barney continued to put on about 10 lbs a month till he reached 105; now going on 3 yrs in October, his black is still black.
Why do I think I am in for a monster OES? George is just now four months and 48lbs. 8O He isn't fat, and I feed him Nutro Large Breed Puppy, about five cups a day, sometimes he doesn't even finish it. If I am overfeeding, someone please let me know.
Now that the Sheepiefest for Michigan 2007 pics are in, take a look at those big males. That will give you an idea what to expect. :D
My vet told me 10 pounds a month was normal. If George is 48 pounds at 4 months, and not overweight, he is already big for his age! I wouldn't worry too much about him overeating yet. He is growing so fast right now, he needs those calories. I think they all eat different amounts, but Oliver is now 6 months and eating about 6 cups of food a day, and Mr. Vet says he is too skinny! In my opinion, oes really vary in weight, eating amounts, and size.

I use Cardinal Gold Metal Shampoo. The oatmeal for Oliver's blacks and the whitening for his whites. It works really, really well, is very gentle on his skin (he gets a bath about 2-3 weeks), and is very reasonably priced, especially compared to the shampoos at the dog shops. (I have to give credit to Ron for the Cardinal Gold Metal Shampoo, I bought it after he recommended it.)
Welcome to the forum, your sheepie's a doll.
WElcome to the forum!

George is 8 months and weighs 77lbs (at the last weigh in).

He turned grey at around 4 months and is continuing to get lighter and lighter!
Thanks so much for the replies.....sounds like a big sheepie-48 pounds at 4 months! Ben is 5 months and wieghs about 48 pounds! By the way....just something to ask your vet about....a breeder/K-9 trainer told me that they are finding large breed puppy food is a factor in hip dysplasia. It causes the bones to grow too fast and the tenons and ligaments cannot keep up with the rapid bone growth. She told me to feed adult dog food after 4 months. I dunno...."THEY" always tell you something different! LOL. I need to do some research online and see if I can find anything about it. If I do, i will post! I will definately check out those sheepie pics from the sheepfest!
Welcome!

Yep, your puppy sounds like he'll be a big one! We got our Barney at 6 months old and he was about 50 ( a little more, but we lied and said 50 so he would be able to fly!)...and he's now almost 3 and weighs between 90-100 (depending)...but I think 90 is a better weight for him.

He was completely gray when we got him at 6 months and I don't know when he started changing. But if you look at pictures of other dogs on this site, you'll see some of them are still pretty black at a much later age (we also shaved him, so I think that gets rid of a lot of the puppy fur and shows the other fur sooner).

Yeah--just warning you--as soon as he's tall enough--make sure to keep your kitchen counters clear. They aren't notorious counter surfers for nothing!
Not sure where you are in Tennessee, but we're having a sheepie picnic here in North Carolina in September. If you're able, you should join us. :D

Thanks Barney and Beau! I would love to come to the sheepie picnic- we live in north east tennessee.....near Gatlinburg. I would have to see how far it is and what the kid's school schedule is. It would be nice for Ben to see other sheepies....he is the only one I have ever seen here. Closest breeder we found was in Georgia which is where we got Ben. May think about getting a female and breeding.....We shall start a Sheepdog revolution! Woohoo! And, I have already found out about counter-surfing....with a large platter of stir fry that I made for dinner one night. Ben got the stir fry and we had turkey sammitches(as my 7 year old calls them still). Check out my new pics....I am such a goof...so proud of my puppy!
Holly! Welcome to the forum!! I am so happy that you have joined, but I'm also bummed! We live in Knoxville, and have been looking for a sheepie friend to play with for years. Unfortunately, we're moving to AL in a few weeks :(
My sheepie (Callie) is in KY with my mom right now while we are selling our house... but she'll be back after it is sold (Which might be very very soon - everyone cross those paws that the offer we got yesterday works out!!!) while we're packing and stuff. Maybe we can arrange a playdate sometime before we go?
If you're interested, PM me and we can chat.
