We got the house!!! Thanks for the vibes!

Elissa - you are a gem! It worked - I got the house
at the auction. (and I didn't reach my limit!! 8O )
I am just so excited. I have never even been to any auctions
like this before - let alone bid on anything. It was
horribly hot and humid, and I sat for over 3 hours, but
I got it. I did have to turn on the sad face and water works,
but I got it. I'd like to thank the academy....

My computer died a horrible death this morning, so I am
borrowing my son's right now, but once I'm back online I will
tell you all a bit about it if anyone wants to hear it.

So much to do - and I don't even want to think about all the
packing right now! At least the new house has central air - YAY!!

WOOO HOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!

I want to "hear"!!! I want to "hear"!!!

Read too!
YAY SHELLIE! :ghug: :high5:  :go: :cheer: :yay:

I am so excited for you!
So you must tell me, how much below the limit was it?
Did you get a great deal?
I am just so thrilled for you. I know this has been a long road for you.
You finally found that perfect house and in the town you wanted. WOO HOO!!
Congratulations Shellie... that is awsome news!!!!! Would love to see pictures of the house.
congrats good going
CONGRADULATIONS!!!!!!!!! Have your feet touched the ground yet? Oh yes, I can hardly wait to hear about the adventure of buying a house at auction. :D
Congrats, Shellie!! That's fantastic!! :D
CONGRATULATIONS SHELLIE!!!

That's fabulous that you got your house! Hooray!!! I can't wait to hear all about your adventure at the auction.
Will there be room for me?
 YAAAAAY!!!
Congratulations, Shellie!! :cheer: Can't wait to hear the story about the sad face and the waterworks, but hey! Whatever works!!

I'm so excited for you guys!! :yay:
Happy Dance!!
WOO-HOO! :excited: :yay:  :high5: :go: :cheer: :clappurple:
Oooh How exciting!
I'm still without my computer -but I just dropped in
to say, I am still so excited!

We did get a really good deal. Since we are planning to
stay there forever the minor stuff that we will want to
do won't break us. The carpet will be one of the first, and
I need some kitchen things even before we move, but I
was already counting on at least 15k for immediate needs.
We ended up well over 10k under the bid limit we decided on
before the auction. So things are pretty well in line.

Yes Ron, there is room for you - we do have a barn now

Spent most of the day trying to make final decisions on the
most expensive stuff we will need to buy. Once all the excitement
wears off I think I am going to be really beat. I bought packing
supplies today! Yay!

I'll be telling more when someone gives my pc cpr.

Shellie
Is it downhill from the barn to the septic or sewer connection? :D Would the motorhome fit? :D :D :D
Shellie!!!!!!!!

I was really hoping you'd get it!!!!!! So happy for you!!! I couldn't post for a day or two as this ole computer my son got for me is worse than my last one..crashes even more.LOL

Anyhow I wanted to let you know that I'm thrilled..and congrats!!!!

Marianne
CONGRATULATIONS! :go: :high5: :clappurple: I'm so excited for you.
Yay! When's the party????
Wow! Congrats, that is awesome! You can have a barn party now, and invite us all. We can have a hayride, and the sheepies can romp. It will be so much fun!
Well done shellie, congratulations, just FANTASTIC :yay: :clappurple:
Thanks guys - you are all so great!

The motorhome may have to stay in the driveway Ron. You
know, you could always move to the basement with Ian.

Party? Party???? Would that be a painting party, an install
the new cooktop party or the laying carpet party? Hee hee -
at least I won't be totally humiliated to have someone in my
home anymore. I never have guests here -aside from close
family - it has just been too horrible. I felt like the kid in
school who never wanted to tell people where he lived! But
now, even before we get the cosmetic stuff done it will be
much better!

Still working on getting the computer straight - my hard drive
fried. We lost everything - but I BOUGHT A HOUSE -so I'm not
that upset.

Shellie
CONGRATULATIONS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! How very exciting!!!!

SURELY pictures are in order????????????????????????
Ok- I have a new hard drive - and I have a minute to catch
up, so here's a brief rundown of what happened at the auction.

First let me say it was outside in (my) the backyard.
It was unbelievably hot and humid - I was sweating buckets. There
were over a hundred people there, and even though we got there
early they were already auctioning the house contents. It was
just like you see on tv, the auctioneer was talking real fast and
I couldn't understand much of what he was saying.
When they got to the real estate time (6pm)
they stopped selling contents and came back to the
center of the back yard and started the real estate. They started
the bid, and I was still just watching from way back in the yard.
I let them bid up about 30k and I started gradually walking my way
up to the front center. There were 7 or 8 people bidding, and when
several of them walked away I jumped in. I was really taking my
time when the auctioneer looked to me for a bid, I was doing math in my
head to distract myself from being too eager. We went back and forth
till there were only 3 of us and the auctioneer wanted to confer
with the family and stopped the bidding. There was a closed reserve
and the family decided at that point to do away with the reserve
and it became an "absolute auction" meaning whatever the high bid
was the family would take it and surrender the property. I was holding
the bid at that point and we were not even close to where I was
prepared to go. Before my first bid, I looked to Vic -and he was
nowhere to be seen. I had a second of panic - but I recovered.
I turned to look at Vic (for impact since everyone was staring at me)
(and I was totally ON MY OWN) with pleading in my eyes before
each jump in price. I was just praying he wouldn't react. Then, I
started looking at the other bidders, and one dropped out. I started
giving the bidder the shocked -look, then I went to the what are
you doing -look, then the I can't believe this -look, and finally
I resorted to tears, and then added the I can't believe you are
doing this to me- look. I could hear the voice in my head - I'd like to
thank the academy... And finally I was holding the final bid! I
did not hear anything after that, in fact my face got cold and my
ears started ringing and I knew I was on my way to passing out.
No way was I passing out in the grass in front of all those people!

Ok, honestly, I don't even feel bad about it.

I think the other bidders wanted to flip the house and I knew the
family selling wanted people with kids to live there. I had spent a little
time in the last few weeks chatting to son, learning all I
could about the house and the auction process. He seems to be a
super nice person, and I met his wife and kids. It did tug a
little on my heart strings knowing how hard it must have been to
see all the things sold. But they seemed to like us, and loved our
kids. He seemed like the kind of person you'd really like to have
as a friend.

So closing should be on sept 7th - I just found that out today.
I am just so excited! This is so much better than when we bought
this (our first) house. I never thought we'd be here this long, and
I have had my fill of Main street. I am so looking forward to some
quiet. Oh - the big bonus is - the land surrounding the new house
is registered preserved farmland, so there will be no developments
going up there any time soon!! I know that may sound petty of me,
but it was one of my big concerns. Why leave town if it's just going
to follow you, right?

So there is the story - one I will be sure to remember for many
years. And Vic gave me a huge- bend over backwards - star seein' -
toe curling- elbow sweating' KISS. That made all the stress and
anxiety totally worth it! I love him.

Shellie
WOWSERS!!!!!

OMG! ROTFL!
What a great story! I knew most of the people would be looking to flip teh house. I am so happy you got it!
Great day for the closing.... It's my Birthday! 8)
E! how appropriate is that! And now I will never forget
your birthday. 8)

I am going to start packing today - and purging as I go
so we don't have to move all the junk we don't need.
There are closets everywhere in the new house - so much
storage. It will be even sweeter if I don't have to use it all!
I bought colored tape last night to color code the boxes to
the rooms they go into:pink, purple, yellow, orange, red, green
blue, silver and camo for my son! I have garbage bags, boxes
and tape. I guess there really isn't any reason to wait to pack the seasonal stuff.
I can't paint today anyway, it's storming.

anyone have any packing suggestions? I'm having a Genie moment-
I wish I could blink it done! I've only moved twice in my whole
life and the first time I had nothing to really move!

Shellie
Congrats on the house!

As for packing, hmmm...well, we're in the middle of a 2-part move, so these are my suggestions:

Start as early as possible (which it sounds like you are doing).

Do one room at a time and:

1) Toss (or donate) all the things you do not want/need/use anymore. Unless it is really special or you know you have a specific use for it in the future, if you haven't used/worn it in a year or so, get rid of it.

2) Start in a room and pack away all the non-essential items. That way, it'll be done with and you won't have to do it later. Things like artwork, picture frames, vases, kitchen items you don't use on a daily basis.

3) Label the boxes really well and put like items together.

4) Designate a room in your house (if possible) as the box zone. That way you can get it all in a central location and out of each specific room, allowing more space and it's easier to tell what's left to pack...

I'm finding that moving takes way longer than I think it will. There always ends up being a lot of last minute stuff anyways, but starting as early as possible helps.

Sort of... Hire a Mover to move anything more than 50 pounds!!!!!

You do all the little stuff, and get it all packed into boxes well before they arrive. If they are good, they will be able to toss everything into and out of their truck so fast you won't believe it. It is the little stuff that slows them down... around here they call the little stuff "chowda".
Before I say congratulations, where is this place? Are you going far away?

I've done some real estate auctions before, you should have called me!
Purge, donate, toss, garage sale. The very best advice.

It takes much longer than what you think it will to pack and to move.

Closets look easy and are the hardest. It takes a long time to move clothes and shoes even if it looks like there isn't hardly anything in the closet it is deceiving.

And you will be tired it's just a fact.
First you have boxes and you pack everything and label every box to each room nice a neat, then you run out of packing paper, boxs then you relize there are no more boxes because everyone else is moving, then you start driving behind store for there boxes. When you have to buy them a u-haul 8O or get plasic ones at wal-mart at least you can use them again. Yup you are tired then you start throwing things in boxes wrapping things with towels, you want every FINISHED just get it done. Just watch where the knifes go. My husband fell down some stairs landed on a box got a knife cut on his head (not bad) BUT!!! what if. And boy I glad I did not pack that one. I have lots of blankets and soft stuff I gat those vaccum bags where is sucks out alll the air for more room THat woked very well. Purge, donate, toss, garage sale.IS the very best advice.
:D
Can't wait to see photos of your new place!!! I'm just so happy for you!

Good advice from everyone. I found moving a lot easier if boxes were labled with the room they belonged to, then placed in those rooms at the new home. Meant less carting things back and forth from room to room. Every bit helps!

The euphoria of a new home helps motivation - just can't wait until your big day!

Marianne
if you need help with a kitchen or bath remodel...let me know :D I know someone :D
Shellie,

Have you ever checked out www.freecycle.org ? There may be on in your area. I can't believe some of the stuff I've given away for free that people are so happy to have. Makes you feel good that your trash is someone else's treasure!

The Freecycle Network™ is made up of many individual groups across the globe. It's a grassroots and entirely nonprofit movement of people who are giving (& getting) stuff for free in their own towns. Each local group is moderated by a local volunteer (them's good people). Membership is free. To sign up, find your community by clicking on the region on the left. You may then go directly to your local group by clicking on "Go To" or you may immediately joining by clicking on "Join." It will generate an automatic e-mail which, when sent, will sign you up for the local group and send you a response with instructions on how it works. Can't find a group near you? You might want to consider starting one (click on "Start a Group" for instructions). Have fun!

The Freecycle Network was started in May 2003 to promote waste reduction in Tucson's downtown and help save desert landscape from being taken over by landfills. The Network provides individuals and non-profits an electronic forum to "recycle" unwanted items. One person's trash can truly be another's treasure!

They always seem to have free moving boxes.....at least here.
I've always gone to Walmart, Target, or a grocery store to get boxes. They generally just give them away.
The only boxes I could get from the grocery store were those fruit boxes that were small. :( And the rest of the places I went to said they didn't really have any... that they were just all thrown in with the normal trash, and there was no set time they did it for me to catch it. Grrr.
I am so close to being done with the outside of the old
house - I can almost imagine getting some serious
packing done. :yay:

For all those who know where I live - I'm only moving
about 2 miles. So no long hauling to move -thank god.
My last move was only 1/2 block, and we only had the
one car so we actually carried some stuff. Not every
day you see people carrying a sofa up Main street.

We have all the moving vans we need since Vic works for
a company that happens to have rental truck. I have
about a dozen big plastic bins for when I start purging and
I'm going to use them for seasonal storage and use the
boxes the stuff is in now, to move. I know I won't have
enough, but it's a start. I check every time I'm at the store
for boxes, so I should have more when I'm ready for them.

Stacy - I do use freecycle - and I love it! I have gotten rid
of more stuff that way, and mostly the people are really
glad to have it. I have never taken anything, but I have
given loads. Great idea -more people should do it.

Darcy - boy oh boy! Could I ever use a few tips and ideas!
I am going absolutely nuts with this kitchen. It's a really
great space, but it needs a few things. I know what counter
top I want, and the cabinets are very old, but in great shape.
I'm having real trouble with placement. I really want to get
the kitchen workable before I move, so I feel like I really
need to get it in my head so I know where I'm going with it.

I wish I had some better pictures. I laid the house out in
visio to place my furniture and design the finished-out
basement. But as for pics, I only have a few from Vic's phone.
Most of them are really bad/small area, so if you have
no idea what you're looking at, the pictures make no sense.
I will post some as soon as I have some better ones.

Closets are not a problem - I only have one to pack up and it's
all tablecloths. All - of - it! It's a couple hundred pounds I bet.
My new house has 7 closets - 7! I won't know how to act.

Onward! I'm actually spot priming tonight. The faster I get
done with the old the faster I can move on to the new!

Shellie
Please, PLEASE hire someone to move your big stuff. PLEEEEEESE
Hire a mover? I haven't hired anyone to do anything
for me in years, I just don't see it happening. I am
so afraid something would happen and a piece would
get scratched or ruined. If I do it that's one thing, if
someone else does it, that's something else entirely.
I am getting rid of a few big pieces, so that's less to
move anyhow. Plus I can't wrap my head around the
extra expense of hiring a mover. I never hire someone
for something I can do. Does that make me a control
freak? I guess I can live with that. 8)

Shellie

Picturing this made me laugh out loud! I also invision a sheepie jumping on it :D
I have now had a couple offers from people to
pay to have our stuff moved.

Ok- here goes - I think I'm gonna cave in hire
a mover.
I have had a few hours to review the situation
(I'm hearing Fagin from Oliver! in my head) and
I really have enough on my list to put me over the
edge even without moving our own stuff. There is
the kitchen, the carpet, the painting etc, and gobs
of little stuff and that is all only at the new house.
The old one is a whole other story. I want to get it
ready to sell, and there is work still to be done.
I'll feel like a charity case if I let someone else pay
for it, but it seems, right now, like it might be worth
the cost.

How does this work and what should I expect? I know
nothing about hiring a mover. What exactly do I pack
up?

I figure this way I have saved a couple days worth of
moving stuff, and I can concentrate on other things.
Now I just have to estimate how long till the house is
ready for the move-in.

Is it just me, or is everyone else at wits end too when a
move is coming up?!!
I'm starting to feel like I may never 'get there' with
getting back to a semi-normal life.

Shellie
Let me get this straight... someone is offering to pay for you to hire a mover???

:lmt:

Shell, it all depends on how much energy you have. If you want to move the little stuff to save paid time on the move, forget it! Stuff it all in boxes and they will move the little stuff in no time flat.

Since you're so close, you could always do the small fragile and/or valuable stuff yourself. If you're short on boxes I suppose you can pack your car(s) and make trips.

The amount of time you will spend packing the items, hauling to your car, packing the car, unpacking the car, hauling into the new place, unpacking is huge compared to buying some boxes, packing the stuff up and marking the room on the outside in magic marker. If you want to save the pros the time, you can pile the boxes up near the front door. If after you're done packing all that little stuff if there's still spare time THEN make trips (or borrow one of those trucks).... if you want, but those pros will move 100 boxes in no time. They'll carry 3 boxes at a time, two of them will have it done in 15 trips each, 10 maybe 15 minutes tops at each end. Save your legs for the painting! :D

Just my opinion.

Also, I don't know what you meant by "and that is only at the new house". You're buying it not emptied and "broom clean"???
What I mean by "that's just at the new house" is, I
want the carpet installed, the kitchen ready (I need
some appliances installed) and the rooms painted
before we move in. I just don't see the point in
having to empty rooms (of newly moved in stuff) to
do those things. Much easier to do before the move.
I also want it clean before I move in. The house is
empty, but not ready to move in to. Since our old
house isn't even on the market yet, I'm a bit more
flexible on moving time. But of course I want to be
done NOW. We'll see how this all progresses, you
never know what might come along!

Shellie
LeAnne and Keith (daughter and SIL) just did that. They bought a house, but still had another month paid on the apt lease. They ripped down wallpaper, primed, painted like crazy before they moved in. Then they started moving stuff in as time allowed - a trip after work, several trips on the weekends.

There was still a bit of a mad rush the last weekend - getting the last items out of the apt, and getting the apt cleaned. But nowhere as hectic as it could have been. And so nice to move things into the house into rooms that were all ready.
Thanks from the other half too. I am very proud of Shellie, she was wonderful. I am not the bidding type. They would have asked for the first bid and I would have bet the farm and dared anyone else to beat it. We are very fortunate to be able to realize this dream. Ron you can camp out in my drive anytime you want. Heck I might even let you in for meals. Everyone is welcome to come visit the Villa Morgret any time. Thanks everyone!!!!!
Vic (Shell's Hubster)
So when's the painting party?
Painting will begin on 9/7, right after I get
the keys. Anyone is welcome to come and
help!
I have the colors picked out, and I am planning on
buying it today. My MIL bought me a job site table
saw, to my surprize, and we are right now setting it
up for work. Vic took the day off to help me at the
(old) house. 8)
I'm hoping to take advantage of a carpet discount
that runs out 8/31. The timing isn't the best, but if
I pay by then I can have it installed the week of
the 10th - I hope. Once again, I can't believe I am
paying someone else to do it, and that really rubs me
the wrong way, but at least it will be done quick and
all at once.
