Stella extremely ill...

Last night Stella began vomiting and had several bouts of Diarrhea (am I spelling that right?). She seemed to calm down finally around midnight, and she fell asleep. I woke up at 6:00am and came downstairs and Stella was lying in a puddle of vomit and diarrhea. She hardly moved, and was drooling slimy frothy stuff horribly.

I took her to the vet and she did a full work-up, and couldn't find the exact cause, but she said she suspected Giardia, and since it can be difficult to spot on a slide, she was going to go ahead and treat her as if that's what she had. She gave me Flagyl, Reglan, and prescription dog food.

Well, it seems to be working, and Stella is doing much better. The vet also gave me some flagyl for Sampson because he has had diarrhea for the last week or so that I have been treating with cooked rice and cottage cheese.

Here's my question though... is flagyl something I can get without a prescription?

I can't answer your question but glad your dogs are getting better, poor babies. How do they get this?
Oh poor Stella! I don't have an answer to your question- but I am sure some of the experts here do. Hope she is on the mend and feeling better soon.
I'm sorry Stella is ill. Flagyl is a prescription antibiotic. In my dogs' experience with giardia, it does not generally involve vomiting. You might want to get a second opinion. . .

I think one of the symptoms is vomiting though. I'm sure that they symptoms are far worse if they are puppies too.

Hope Stella gets better soon!
Sorry to hear about Stella. Unfortunately Flagyll is only by prescription. I think vomitting can be a symptom of giardia. the Flagyll will take care of parasites but giardia is a little tough to detect and get rid of.

Sounds like your little Stella may have gotten dehydrated as well. Its really important when dogs ( especially puppies!) have vomitting and diarrea to be sure they are taking in some fluids. Ice chips are good. As I've said before, I always keep a bottle of Pedylite around for times just like Stella had.

Good luck...be sure when you start feeding her again to go easy..maybe chicken and rice a few days/ Boiled to get rid of the fat and rice overdone.
Hope she feels better soon.
My dogs had giardia years ago, extremely hard to confirm that is exactly what it is.

One had the vomitting also with it, so we had a few course of anti-biotics (metrogyl) as well as something to settle the vomitting on one of them.

Usually with giardia it takes a 2nd or 3rd course of anti-biotics to clear it up, so don't be surprised if the diarrhea starts up again after finishing the first course of tablets. You might have to go and get some more to help get rid of it completely.

Also areas they are going make sure you disinfect well as to not cross contaminate again. Remove as much as you can and get rid of it then disinfect throughly.

Keep them both on a light diet for quite awhile and make sure there drinking plenty of water

Hope your babies clear up soon
Please monitor her carefully for the next couple of days. I hope she'll be okay. What you described sounded so scary. :(

Flagyl is also known as Metronidazole... it's a prescription drug.

If it is Giardia and the symptoms return after treatment, ask your vet about the possibility of treating with Panacur. I believe my pack had Giardia and and they round-robined it for a long time. We cultured, we treated with Metronidazole and it would return despite careful clean up. Treating all of them with Panacur at the same time was the only thing that finally cured them.
Sending best wishes for a fast recovery to Stella
Poor Stella!! And how scared you must have been to come down and find her like that!

So sorry to hear about your puppy. Finding her like that must have been really scary. Lots of positive thoughts to Stella and a hug to you. Keep us posted. Any idea how or where she caught it? I've only heard of it in mountain streams with beaver dams?
What a frightening scene to come upon! 8O I am glad Stella is getting treatment and I hope she is feeling better soon. I have no personal experience with this, but it sounds awful. Best wishes for a speedy recovery.
OH MY GOSH
Hope they are doing better. Stella sends Stella good thoughts and wishes.

Panda wishes stella a quick recovery....and sloppy kisses too!
Poor Stella! :(
I hope she's feeling better really soon.
Thanks to all for the well wishes!!! Stella had a few more mild vomiting episodes last night, but this morning she seemed to be feeling much better. She played with Sampson for about 15 minutes. The funny thing is that Sampson didn't get nearly as sick with this as Stella... he has the diarrhea, but it's not nearly as frequent as Stella's and he never vomited, yet he is the younger/smaller puppy. The vet said that technically Stella is a puppy because she is only 17 months, but that her immune system should be fully developed by now, so I'm not sure why she got so much sicker than Sampson, who isn't even 16 weeks old yet.

I will go ahead and finish this regimen of Flagyl, but if she gets sick again I think I will opt for the Panacur.

Thanks again to everyone... it's so nice to know that other people truly understand just how precious these babies are to our hearts.
Yay!! Glad they are doing better! :clappurple:
Precious indeed!!! Glad they are both feeling better.

Thanks for the update.
thanks for the good news about Stella :)
So glad to hear the update on stella, she had me worried. :phew:
Poor Stella!

Guinness had this when he was a small puppy. It is horrible and very heart wrenching to see your baby so sick. He had to go through quite a few rounds of antibiotics-he just couldn't kick it.

What seemed to help him was the pedialite (spelling?) and the vet wanted me to give him a few licks of ice pops every 10 to 15 minutes (yes, I took a few days off from work to stay home with him and feed him ice pops-my co-workers thought that I was crazy!) But the sugar in it gave him a little more energy until he could keep some of the rice down, and it also helped to keep a little more fluids going into him also.

Good luck, and make sure that you take some pictures of them after they eat the ice pops--orange, red, and grape colored beards are too funny 8O !
Hope Stella is feeling better today....sending both of you lots of hugs! :ghug: :ghug: :ghug: :ghug:
Hope Stella is feeling better! It took 2 round of medicine to clear Oliver up after his bout with Giardia.

According to my vet, Giardia can live in the soil for a good while, so he recommended that we pick up after Oliver right away, not to water the grass, and to pray for hot, sunny days.
What an aweful thing to go through. I would be really vigil where vomiting is concerned. Sometimes they may require IV fluids. So glad she is doing better and hope it continues from here!
Hi,

My heart went out to you regarding everything you went through with Stella as I read your post numerous times. Everytime previously I tried to send a word of encouragement my computer crashed. So hopefully now this one will go through and I'm so glad to hear she's doing much better.

My boys are sending sloppy kisses!

Marianne
