Many thanks

Mike -- A number of members have told wonderful success stories about similiar situations and I expect they will be along shortly to give you hope and encouragement. Are you talking about "mad Margaux" who you had previously said zooms around the room like a wild woman?
Hi Valerie,

Many thanks indeed... Wow! you remember Margaux! (the one in he picture) She is now so adorable, and has calmed down a lot..

We actually bought Magnum ( 6 months old now) after Margaux and he is the one that now has severe HD.. He is the sweetest puppy you could imagine, and to have this terrible news today, has been an absolute nightmare.. His walk is quite bad now, and just don't know how to cope..We have Margaux (not quite so mad now), and Mouton..

I do hope we can get some ideas and advice as to what to do..

Thanks again Valerie, and appreciate your thoughts..

Mike has your vet discussed the surgery options for Magnum? :?
Hi,

Yes, he did, but with Magnum at only 6 months old, its far too early, and with severe HD on both hind legs, its something we have to take into account..We don't know what other options there may be.. We just want to do the best for him..

Thanks

Mike
Hi Mike...
It may not be too late to have a triple pelvic osteotomy (TPO). This is a surgery that often gives a pup the best possible outcome. There is only a small window of opportunity to have this done though. We had hoped this would be an option for our girl at 10 months old but it was already too late so timing can be critical.

As with any surgical intervention, you need to balance the risks and the possible benefits and find someone who has done the procedure successfully many times.

Each dog with hip dysplasia can react to the disease differently. Terrible x-rays don't always relate to a dog responding horribly to the condition... I think the reverse is most likely true too.

We adopted Panda at 10 months of age from New England Old English Sheepdog Rescue almost two years ago. She had a vet confirmed diagnosis of hip dysplasia by the age of 9 months. Here are her x-rays...

You can see that she has almost no cup holding the heads of the femurs in place. She gets one adult buffered aspirin in the morning and two Cosequin DS per day and it's been controlling her condition. Yes, she has a funny run and narrow hips. She over compensates with her front legs/shoulders. Keeping a dog with hd lean is extremely important because it keeps unnecessary pressure off the hips. Water exercises are said to be great for dogs with hd because it keeps the muscles in condition while keeping weight off the joints.

Here's my Panda... she's done well so far.

If you can, I'd check into the TPO immediately to see if it may be an option for your little guy. There are also other surgical options like an FHO and total hip replacement but he's still growing... I think these are done on adult dogs but I may be mistaken.

Best wishes to you and your pup.
I have no advice just wanted to say how sorry I am to hear about Magnum  , he is a beautiful sheepie
We had a puppy Katrina who was diagnosed with hip displasia in one hip when she was a puppy. That was over 15 years ago.

I am happy to report she lived a very healthy active life for 10.5 years. With some minor bumps along the way that were treated with regular and alternative vetrinarian services such as electroaccuscope and spinal adjustments, etc. Also glucosamine and chondroitin supplements.

At that time surgery was not stressed and I was very uneducated and niave. If I would have really pressed the surgical options and been aware of the possibilities I think we would have given her surgery.

She went on to be one of the great loves of our lives!

You are lucky in the fact that nowadays there are so many modern day miracle solutions and so much helpful information on this forum.

Wishing you the best luck with this situation and big hugs to your sweet puppy!
A very big Thank You to all you wonderful people who have replied to my post, you are so wonderful! We will certainly look at all the options, and i tihnk it has given us more hope.. I guess the real sad thing is that we were going to breed from Magnum and Margaux next year, or the year after, but that dream has now vanished..

Being in Japan, there are not too many people who know about the OES breed, so getting real info on this type of serious issue is very difficult.

Thank you again for all your warm wishes and comments, and will keep you all posted and what develops.. Will try to add a few more photos of Magnum later today..

Hi Mike, HD can be a problem in the breed, did both the parents of Magnum come with the HD clearances?. If so then you need to notify the breeder of Magnum of the problem if he came from an ethical breeder.

Sorry to hear about Magnum, he sure is a cutie :D Also keeping Magnum on the leaner side, not too tubby will help also till you work out what your options are down the track with him.

Best wishes to you both, so sad to hear one so young with severe problems in the hips. :(
Hi

Yes, we have informed the breeder, and is absolutely astounded by this..We boought Margaux and Magnum from the same breeder who has an exceptional reputation. Margaux is built like a race horse! - The breeder is very shocked too, and we are keeping in touch with them.. We are just hoping that with new technology these days we will be able to help Magnum somehow..

Thanks so mch for your thoughts..
