Adivce on a breeder I found

Hello everyone!

I've been looking to add an OES to our family for quite some time. I found this breeder, and they are AKC registered, but does that mean she could still be a bad breeder? I've e-mailed some oesca members, and the costs are high, but I will probably end up going that route to get OFA cert. But I still wanted to know if anyone knows if this breeder is any good:

I do know that getting an OFA cert is the way to go, so no need to post about that, I was just wondering if anyone knew about this breeder. I have a newfoundland and a labrador, but OFA cert and I'm aware that what you pay for is what you get.

Thanks, Katherine

I meant *both are OFA cert.

In fact, Wendy Clarke (the owner of the website in your link) has posted on this forum although she is not an active member. Perhaps she will tell us more about her breeding program, health checks, guarantees, etc.

There are also a number of threads discussing whether it is worthwhile to choose breeder that adheres to the OESCA guidelines and what the AKC registration means. If you browse around, you will find much to think about.

Good luck!
First off, welcome to the community! Nice to have you here -- I do hope you'll stop by once in a while even after you've purchased your pup, no matter where from.

There are lots of great reasons to go with a breeder who has signed OESCA's Code of Conduct, agreeing to be bound by their code of ethics, among other things.

A breeder should be interviewing you as much as you are interviewing the breeder; both of you are committing to a 15 year relationship with your dog in common. A erlationship like that can be quite rewarding!

Read around the forum a bit, and welcome again!
Not specifically about this breeder, but for any breeder:

What do you mean by a "good" breeder? You might get references from past puppy buyers, on how they are to deal with with.

The first question I would ask is "why do they breed?". Unless a breeder is trying to improve the breed by showing, and working on improving lines, they are in it for the fun of it and the money.

To find out if the dogs are good breeding stock and your puppy will have the best chance of a healthy life you can ask for copies of the health checks that the parents have had. There is nothing on the website speaking to that.

I also would ask how they "breed to the standard"? Do they show the breeding dogs and do they have thier championships? Otherwise, you do not know how close they are to the standard, and may get a funny looking OES.

You want to check into the pedigrees of the parents. I could be wrong, but I thought I saw that these dogs were purchnased on PuppyFind, where many unscruplous breeders churn out puppies. You really need to do your reasearch.

And last of all, any breeder who has 2 dogs and breeds them over and over again, is not working on improving the breed. They are using their dogs to make some money.

It is up to you to decide what kind of breeder you want to support.

Good luck!
Thanks for all the information. I'm just starting the research process now, as I wont be getting an OES for a year. I will most likely go with OESCA recommended breeder as I've done for my current dogs. I shouldn't support anything less than the breed standards and proper health.

:yay: Honestly - you're amazing!!! :yay:
Katherine:

Just my 2 cents as a newbie to this forum and "motherhood" --Heart, my 8 week old pup just came home last week and I am so very happy with her temprement, sweetness and her appearance- EVERYTHING-

I "interviewed" a few breeders before making my decision (and 2 of them interviewed me, as they should have). They volunteered so much information about the puppies lineage, the testing, etc - they answered all my questions and were available any time. I stayed away from websites were not members of the OESCA.

I was where you are now, so I think I know what you are going through and this is the best place to be for any questions you may have ---

Good Luck and post on the forum when you decide!!

Val :D :D
Thats great your enjoying your new pup! I'm so jealous...

I know I will only get a puppy from a OESCA listed breeder. I enjoy dog breeds as a kind of art almost, so I refuse to support anyone that breeds for other reasons.... like for money. I'm not into dogs on that level, and neither should my breeder. I'm sticking to my original notion that if your supporting a breeder that is not in the 'Club of America' for whatever that breed may be, then you should rescue. Anything in between is promoting stuff I don't believe in. This may be extreme to some, but it really makes sense to me.

Thanks again for all the info, I lose my self for hours reading in this forum. It's great!
