joint supplements-arthritis

My older OES is starting to show signs of arthritis. I am looking at some supplements and have narrowed the search to:

1. Cosequin DS
2. canine Complete Joint Mobility

Is anyone familiar with either? Any recommendations are welcome.

Thanks

I have not heard of those, but have you checked out NuVet? www.nuvet.com
Our first sheepie, Quincy, took the Cosequin DS for most of his life, as he had surgery for elbow dysplasia at 1 1/2 years of age. It worked very well for him, and my vet recommended it because there has been extensive research on it, tracking dogs on it from birth to death, etc.

Good luck!

Laurie and Oscar
We've also given Cosequin DS to one of our sheepies... it's been for almost 2 years now. You start at a higher dose fir 4-6 weeks then lower it to a maintenance level. She's had bad hips documented at 9 months of age. She's doing well so far.

It can be hard to tell which supplement is the "best" because each dog responds differently to the disease itself. I'd pick one and see if she responds well... give it at least a few months I'd think. It takes time to achieve the benefits. If you don't see any improvement, you might ask about switching to a different one.

Good luck to you.
My old girl has arthritis pretty bad and she's been doing 90% on Flexicose, a glucosamine chondroitin supplement. Since starting it, she's not even on the meds that she had been on for the pain before. I highly recommend it!
my 2 are over 12 and i give them glucosamine 1500mg with chondroition
seems to help a bit
Tess's person...

I looked at your photo gallery pictures and told my husband that one of the
pups looked EXACTLY like our Darby. I think he thought I was nuts when I
asked him what he thought

But after some searching I found that this picture is of Tess (Aggie) and
Amanda (know known as Darby). You got to meet her before I even did... I
think it was at Grapevine Lake?

Amazing...
PS- I THINK Tess and my Kaytee are sisters... just from different litters.

I agree with Jill on the Flexicose. It is GREAT!

Here is the web site:

THe recue that I got Rheba from mentioned that they purchased the GNC Triflex chews. THey come in Peanut Butter flavor. They are typically cheaper than purchasing things from pet stores and they are actually a little better. The rescue had one dog that took several minutes to stand up. They put him on Triflex and he just about jumped up right away. I found a link to the product. THe other good thing is that GNC runs specails for BOGO or buy one get one half off.

Link to GNC.com

Maybe this could help.
I echo the recommendation for Flexicose. Drez has been taking it for about 2 years now and considering how bad her hips are, I think the Flexicose is mostly the reason she's still with us today!
Thanks to all who have answered. I put Tillie on Canine Joint Mobility Supplement.

"6 Girls" Mom, Jaci:

Small world, huh? Yes, we picked Tess (Aggie) up at Lake Grapevine and that is her and Darby (Amanda). I think they look a lot alike, especially the facial expressions. Kaytee is Tess's "sister." Tess came from Kemo Sabe and Angel. She was born December 2004.

We have lost touch with Kaye since she stopped breeding and got into rescue. Do you have a contact email?

Your Sheepies are very cute.

Hi Tess's Mama
So glad to see you here 8)
Beebles is part of that clan as well...born April 2005@ Maraposa Oaks
Her papa is Kemo Sabe & her mama is Rosie :hearts:
Beebles is Kaye's last sheepie baby
Diane
I think all of us Maraposa sheepie people agree Kaye and Fletcher had a hand in bringing about sheepies with great temperaments and personalities. :D It must have been a sight to see all 19 of the little stinkers together that day.

I'll PM you with the last contact information I had. It's great to hear from you and to see pictures of your lovely sheepies again!

Diane,

Actually, I am Tess's "dad". Just have no photos of myself on the board.

Tillie, our other Mariposa girl, came from Rosie and Barney. Rosie's babies were always smart ones. Tillie was supposed to go to someone in Canada, but Kaye developed a negative feeling about that person and sent her to us instead. We are very lucky she did.

Jaci, yes seeing the 19 babies running around was special. We went to Kaye and Fletcher's to pick Tess out. It was great to see the "no crates" was really true. When Kaye called the sheepies they came running out of three different bedrooms that day. Kaye provided a terrific socialization for her OES's.

Oh...I would have loved to have met her HERD!
Fletcher & Kaye met me near the Dallas airport so
I was not privileged to hear her call "baby...baby...baby" either!

8) Gee...these sheepie girls are related on both sides
Diane...nice to have kin on the OES Forum
PS Beebles is a smart sheepie as well as a smarty-pants
Kaye was very active on this forum for quite a while, then just stopped after Fletcher came home from the hospital. She hasn't returned any emails/PMs that I've sent.
Tess's Dad,
If that doesn't work, try Osteo-3. I get it from my vet, made in Ft Worth. It doesn't have chondoritin, but I can tell when my crew has missed a dose. We tried several others first, with poor results for my crew.

And with football season almost upon us, I would like to take this opportunity to say PESH rules! Eastside Pride!
Thanks Ron. Kaye and Fletcher loved their OES's. They considered every puppy one of their "babies." Kaye would tear up each time she placed one in a new home. It was really neat to go to their home and hear her call the puppies out- "baby, baby, baby."

I hope her and Fletcher are okay.

Thanks also for setting this site up. Look how you brought Mariposa OES's together from Michigan, Georgia and the great state of Texas.

hehehe Diane
It can be so difficult telling someone's gender by typed words alone. I admit that I cheated and looked up some of his other posts. :P

Gary and Diane... do your furry kids still respond to "baby, baby, baby"? Diane and I talk a lot but I can't remember if Beebles still does.

It was funny because it was like having a secret weapon in the training arsenal. If Emma and Darby got it in their heads not to come, all we had to do is say those three magic words and they'd come running. I even tried to add a southern drawl to it ... you know us northerners often mess up a good thing. To this day those words still grab their attention and get them all excited.

I think it's so neat how all of our sheepies are related and how we've come back together years later :D If anyone hears how Kaye and Fletcher are doing I hope you'll post.
