How can I teach the sit command when he is always sitting?!

Paco is now 12 weeks old. We have gone over the "come" command, which he is really good with. I want to start teaching "sit" and "lay down", but he is ALWAYS sitting or laying down. He pretty much never stands for more than a minute or so before he plops down on the ground, even when we are on a short walk. Hmmm...maybe I should start with a "stand up" command!

Paco seems to be very low energy. Is this typical for a 12 week old OES? Even strangers who meet him comment on how calm he is for a puppy. The vet said he is healthy, but I'm not sure if I should be aware of any signs of poor health that may be causing him to sit or lay all the time. Has anyone had a similar experience with a calm puppy? I think I'm being a little paranoid  ! I think a lot of his low energy is due to the heat. He perks up a little bit in the evenings when it cools down.

A low energy sheepie? Where can I get one!
He's adorable! :D If he's healthy and doesn't have a fever, is eating good, pottying right, I guess I wouldn't worry. If it's really hot where you are it seems it could be the reason.

Try training for 3-5 minutes at night then... or until you loose his attention. You might put him on a leash and start walking. If when you stop he automatically sits, give the command "sit" and praise. Maybe he'll get the idea this way.

If he's ever still standing  , have a piece of food in your cupped hand and bring it up from his nose to the top of his head... keeping the food/hand close to his head so he'll follow it. They will usually plot their little butt down without any assistance. Give the "sit" command as he does it and give him the treat.

That is how we taught Oliver to sit. He wasn't and still isn't a high energy pup (now 6 months old). When he looked like he was about to sit, we said "sit", then gave him a treat when he sat. He sat so often, and we were very adament on saying "sit" that it really didn't take long for him learn.

Paco is very cute! From the front he looks like a skunk with his white markings.
Oh bet thats nice to have a low energy sheepie  and I just love the big smile on Paco's face in this photo it says pure happiness

Hmm...long lost siblings maybe? I also have a lazy/low energy sheepie. I posted concerns about his lazieness a couple months ago. Hes just lazy and calm. I'm not complaining one bit. I love his personality.

^^that is what I did. Usually lured him with the treat to get him up. Then moved it slowly from his nose to top of head and he naturally sat and I also said "sit." He caught on in a flash. But down...he also goes right to down before I have a chance to command it lol...

Just my 2 cents.
Oh, just wait! Right now they are growing bone, etc and that takes energy. I can remember taking the puppies for walks and having to carry them home because we went too far. That didn't last long........
^Darn-just kidding :D
Thanks for the advice! I'm definitely not complaining about him being calm. I actually chose him because my breeder said he was the most easygoing of the litter. Sheesh. He's this calm and I'm still worn out! Cheers to those with high-energy pups!
Clyde was super laid back like that at that age, too. I used to carry him around like a baby and take him over people's houses and he'd just sit in my lap for hours. I thought something was wrong with him, too! Now he's almost 3 and he's still really lazy but once he gets wound up, it's hard to calm him down.

<--For the most part though, this is his normal pose.
If you can figure out how to replace Bella's batteries we might be able to work out a deal. :D When we've come home from a walk she thinks that it's time to throw the ball and play chase either in the house or outside, she doesn't care. She is almost 9 months. So maybe the battries are just taking a little longer to charge up. :D
Chewie has always been laid back too. :D
He has good energy, but rarely gets too wild and never gets to the really wild stage. He is definitely the calmest of the 3 we've had. I realized it the most when in beginners class at 5 months old the long sit and long down were his 2 favorite exercises in class. 8O And he still is calm at 15 months.
You can maybe teach the sit while walking too...just stop walking a moment and say "sit" and raise a treat above her nose which she mostlikely will follow and automatically put her coolie down into a sit.

A laid back sheepie...Now that sounds refreshing  I'm with bella's Mom. Mine is going on 9 months and thinks the walk is just the appetizer to throwing the ball and running crazy in the yard when we get home!
