SheepieFest! 4! Chicago

Oh dear! We've run into a major snag! Candy's Canines will not be hosting the agility trials this year, so we have lost our place!!!

Any suggestions?

Do we want to try and find a place where the dogs can be off leash and we can bring food and bbq? Or just find a restaurant with outdoor seating that is cool with dogs? Or just a park/forest preserve that we can meet at for awhile?
Anticipating this snag from Deborah's original post, I have been checking into Cook County Forest Preserves sites. There are 2 out our way (in Barrington) right off I90 and Rt. 59. Cost to reserve a grove with a shelter would be $60 ($10 to apply, $50 for the permit). Nothing is said in the rules that dogs must be kept on-leash.

I'm more than willing to ante up for the permit. Are you Lake County people willing to come into Cook County? We might also get some people who are further south who haven't wanted to go to Zion in past.
Yep...Zion is way up here!

We can do something a bit more in the middle (so we can hit some of the Wisc. people).

What do you guys think?

(I sorta like the dog friendly restaurant idea! Hackneys has geese, maybe they'd allow dogs!)

The dogs can "work" for their treats and keep the geese away
Dog Friendly Area

The Forest Preserve District of Cook County provides the Beck Lake Dog Friendly Area for visitors to unleash their dogs. This is the ONLY location within the District's holdings where dogs may be unleashed.

What town is Beck Lake in?
Glenview I think.

http://www.becklakedogs.org/index.html
According to the info on Beck Lake, each dog has to have a permit.

I say go to a Cook County FP and if the dogs get off leash, well, we didn't see anything.
We might be tempted to make a trip for an off leash adventure.
Do we want to have a planning/brainstorming meeting soon? Everyone is welcome to meet at our place, but we don't have a yard if dogs come too.
I'm up for a planning meeting and vote to have it at Amanda's and Melissa's!
So sorry! My colleagues from Belgium have been in town all week. I haven't had a moment to check posts!

My preference is definintely an off leash dog park. Fozzie is very social!

Beck Lake is in Glenview (right near my Mom's place). We're available to come out to Elgin on Sundays except for August 26...I think.
If it's offleash Wally and I will have to sit this one out :(
any thoughts on dates???
September is out for me since I'm moving Bob the beginning of the month then going to my niece's wedding in New Mexico at the end. SheepieFest! has been traditionally held in October and we've always had decent weather. Last year was a little windy, though.

I'm still of the mind that we have it at a forest preserve and if the dogs aren't on their leashes, oh well.

We have 2 Indiana people who want to come--IHeartStella and Nita--so we have to show them a good time!
Hi All! Unfortunately, SheepieFest may not happen this year due to planning conflicts. HOWEVER, Chicagoland OES Rescue has a fantastic get together in October as well. I will post the date as soon as I find out. It is at King's Kennel in Riverwoods, IL (right near the tri-state tollway)which has a huge space indoors and outside. Dogs are free to run outside :D Fozzie loves it! All are welcome. I don't recall any fees unless you choose to purchase raffle tickets or give a donation. We have gone for the last 3 years and always have a blast. One year I went without a dog and still had a great time!
If we all show up with our sheepies for the Chicagoland OES get-together... would that not qualify as a Sheepiefest? Let's try and see!!

We'd need to ask Deborah about that one :D :D :D

I can't wait to meet and see everyone!!! Let me know if you need any assistance or information. I live only about 4 miles from Riverwoods so we can make a weekend out of it if anyone wants to :D
Oh dear! I don't think the Chicagoland group would like us to use the SheepieFest! name.

After all, its their party!

Sorry, I've let you all down this year. There's just been too much going on in my life.

I hope this works out. I think it will be really good if we form a nice alliance with the other group. They are very nice people.
If anyone still wants to make Sheepiefest happen, I'd be happy to pitch in and help out!
Oh Heather! Thanks for trying to keep "the dream" alive!!!!!
Two possibilities: we attend Chicagoland's get-together and not call it SheepieFest! because it is not "our" party. As Deborah said, this could be the opportunity to show the Chicagoland people that we are decent and don't have cooties.

OR

we continue the tradition of SheepieFest! and have it somewhere other than the Zion forest preserve. I am more than willing to coordinate or co-chair or whatever.

What are everyone's thoughts?????

I vote for the second option and support attendance at Chicagoland's do but not in an official SheepieFest role.
I love both ideas, but I know my mind is in way too many places to help out much this year. We'll definitely be there for Chicagoland Rescue and anyone who might like to play that weekend. There's always pizza :D
You could have it in Michigan. I know a place. ;)
Heyheyhey, you Michiganders! It's Illinois turn to host. Although Laurie provided a lovely venue.

Amanda, Melissa, Heather. Any of you want to brainstorm this offline? Heather, if we have it off-leash, I understand that Walter won't be able to attend, but you could bring one of your rescues.
I'm still up for planning a SheepieFest 4.

All we really need to do is find a place and let everyone know where and when. We don't necessarily need any activities or games.
I agree. Sorta like the day we all meet at the dog park.

We can do it very informally.

The Pirate clan is in!
That's what I was saying earlier.. Not to use the actual name per se, but if we all show up and we all have our sheepies, it would be a "SheepieFest" regardless of what is was called, lol.

When Stella and Sampson go at it, it's like SheepieFest in my living room... and that's just 2, lol.
Amanda, I totally agree. I was thinking last night that everyone can bring their own picnic and we just eat and visit and mess with the dogs. I'll check into availability of the forest preserve at 59 and the tollway (90). They probably have a grill. I prefer having it on Saturday.

And people can still go to Chicagoland's function. We'll have SheepieFest!4 on a different date. Stacy, do you know when Chicagoland is having theirs?
Iheartstella!

I am the MOTHER OF SHEEPIEFEST! so we can use that name whenever we wish!!!!!!

Auntie Paula, that sounds like a really good location. Thanks!
:yay:
Not only are you the mother, Deborah, you hold the legal trademark to the name! HEE!

Ah, excellent then!!! Just tell us where and when, and we'll try to be there with bells on!! :yay:

That's right! I almost forgot!

I even "own" the SheepieFest@yahoo.com.

(Too bad I can't access my yahoo mail from work  )
try going to www.freeproxyserver.net You type the yahoo address in the address bar on the page, and you'll be able to get to yahoo and check e-mail, and no cookies or thumbs are left behind. (Some employers block this proxy, but most don't).
perhaps we can contact the folks at the Chicagoland OES rescue and try to help them out with their gathering? maybe if we get someone on the inside we can change the name to sheepiefest?
Ooooo Heather! That's so subversive!
Going to a park would be great! Sally wasn't sure of the date, but I have Sun, Oct 21 written down in my planner. I will call Jeri this week to see if she could confirm for me.

Just a thought...We could make an entire weekend out of this if anyone would like. Sheepiefest picnic on Sat, Oct 20 and Chicagoland Rescue on Sunday. It would really be a fun sheepie weekend.
I really think the two events should be separate. I'm sure Chicagoland would not appreciate us infiltrating, just as we would not appreciate that activity on their part. They would welcome our attendance but not as "Sheepiefest!" reps.
That would be Sheeptastic! :rimshot:
I was just thinking that if people were driving in from Indiana, they may want to make an entire weekend out of OES activities.

The Chicagoland OES Rescue event is open to everyone and anyone with a sheepdog or those that love sheepdogs. There aren't special invitations, it's a word of mouth fundraising event. We wouldn't go there as representatives of Sheepiefest, just people looking to share their loves of sheepdogs.

Anyway, I'll be at both events.
I'd be coming from Indiana, and I think it would definitely be more worth my while to make a weekend out of it. Like you said, I wouldn't attend as a representative of anything other than someone who really loves Sheepdogs... especially Stella and Sampson :hearts:
I actually think it would be a good idea for us to all go to the Chicagoland event. I've never been to any of their events and I think it's a great way to support them and the cause. I think all the money from the silent auction last year went to them anyway!

If people from out of town want to hang out the day before or after the Chicagoland event I'd be happy to be a tourguide! I'd offer my house as a meeting spot but I don't think Wally would be too pleased with all the intruders
I like the idea of making it a sheepie weekend. I'll check availability of the forest preserve for Oct. 20 (but not til next week).

I never meant people shouldn't go to both. I meant that we should not try to take over Chicagoland's function and turn it into our SheepieFest! My motto is "separate but equal."

The donations went to NEOESR. Chicago didn't seem interested in receiving them

Grannie Annie was delighted. We raised approximately $700!

Odd.
My thoughts exactly, Ron.

Now now...If I remember correctly, there was more to the story than that. It's not that they weren't interested.
Do tell.
Ron wrote:

Deborah would need to tell the details as I probably wouldn't explain it correctly. Only if she wants to of course. Trust me, there isn't anything very exciting about it.
Gosh...I thought I had replied to this already! I wonder where it went???

I have had some bad feeling towards COESR for many years...details of which are not important, because I've truly put it behind me.

When we first started talking about having the silent auction, I approached someone involved with them, and found out they do not have 501C status....which (as an accountant) was very puzzling.

Anyhoo...the people I talked to weren't intestered in the SheepieFest! group and if anything, thought we were trying to steal their thunder, which we were not. When I started SheepieFest! I didn't even know there was a Chicago OES group. It was not done as rivalry, just as a chance to get together with others in the Midwest with sheepdogs. Very simple concept.

Grannie Annie really, REALLY urged me to give the $$$ to Chicago, but no one ever reached out...and since they do not (unless something has changed) have a charity status, I figured...hey...what the heck! NEOESR helps rescues all over the country, so lets send our cashola there.

End of story....Oh no...small update. I was in contact with Chicago Rescue about a dog I was interested in fostering a short while ago (not a good fit for our family) and they could not have been more pleasant or accomidating. So, as I said before....or tried to...time marches on, and so must we. Onward and upward!

(Boring, eh?)
I have had similar "non accomodating" experiences with them. I think it has a lot to do with being overwhelmed and being all volunteer. But it would be really nice if we could all get along and join forces to help them grow.

As far as 501c3 status- it takes a while to become tax exempt even if you are registered as a rescue.
I agree, Heather. We should just all get along (wasn't that a line from some movie?)

Which is why it would be nice if we could support each other!

They have been doing rescue for a very long time. I know I had orginally contacted them back in the late '80s. I would think that would be sufficient time to gain 501C status.

No?
Hi everybody,

We've just moved to Chicago and I'm glad to see that there are some "bobtails" here and that you are organizing the SheepieFest. I don't know how and what I could do but I'm happy to help somehow to meet more bobtails! :D
Hello! Welcome to Chicago! Where did you come from?

Thank you! Well, a little bit from everywhere. :D I'm from Budapest, Hungary and have been in the states for 2 years. During these years, I lived in Columbia, SC and we just left Boston to Chicago.
OK I have to ask -- why so much travel? :D

I'm just nosey.

Oh, I'm just following my husband. :hearts: :D It's his work.
My husband, I, and of course Twiggy will be at the Chicagoland event on the 21st. Hope to see some of you there!
The 'bup household is uber busy this year as well, but more power to Auntie Paula- you figure out where and when and we will do our best to be there. If we can in fact make it you can count on us for $$$ or food or silly hats or whatever is required!! Our human child is in football this fall and Saturdays and Sundays are very packed with games and practice, but let us know and we shall check the schedule.

On the 501 thing- I have a friend who just set up a new rescue and the 501 thing went swimingly- but her dad's a lawyer- I think it it all depends upon where your focus is. BTW - if you are fans of Dobermans you can check it out at http://www.leanonmedoberescue.com/. I've been very impressed with their work and the committment of their volunteers.

Back to the sheepies! I'm all for a party and if October doesn't work we could even go for the first week in November- we are all tough! We can handle a little chill in the air, of course the sheepies will be nekkid as usual, but nekkid for them includes a warm coat.

Up.
Pirate wants to know how his sister Chelsea is?????

Is that September or October? And where about is the Chicagoland event? Can we take other breeds there too? I wouldn't want to leave my older puppy at home.
Hi, please see this forum thread link for posting of Chicagoland OES Rescue event in October. Yes, I've seen other dog breeds at the event. Hope to see you there!

Thank you Stacy! :D Shall I let anybody know that we are coming? Oh, I'm so excited, I already put it in my calendar! :yay:
I too am very interested in going to Chicago... but wanted to know if I need to register somewhere or let someone know to expect me ahead of time? I wont be entering my dogs in any competitions or anything, just coming to meet people (and dogs), and enjoy myself (and my new-found freedom).
Yes, you are supposed to tell ME ME ME! That is so I know you are attending and to make sure we meet up. Please send me a private message or email so we can discuss details!

Really, there is no formal invitation or RSVP required. You just attend!
ill be there..... sheepie-less
