extremely bad diarrhea

Hi everyone: I have a problem, well not me but my oes, he has diarhea really bad, as soon as we stop feeding him boiled rice and beef or turkey and feed him dog food he has horrible diarrhea, and since he is not confined it can be in the kitchen floor easy to clean or like the other night in my bedroom :( . Let me start at the beginning hope I dont bore you

Churchill just turned 9 months old, we got him from someone that passed herself as a breeder and the story is long but this wasnt a very nice person and he wasnt treated very nice. Anyway we bought him home and fed him nutro puppy food for large breed dogs rice and lamb. Diarrhea all over the place. My mom immediately started feeding him the boiled rice and beef and no more diarrhea in the mean time I had already taken him to the vet and they call saying he had round worms, we got the medication and gave it to him as indicated. Anyway to make a long story short.

Every time we feed him dog food, even Science Diet for sensitive stomach he has diarrhea all over. But not with the boiled rice. Tomorrow I am going to try to get another fecal specimen to the vet, but I think there is more to it. We were ready to place him with rescue, because we cant afford the vet bills but my mom talked to 2 ladies from rescue and they suggested several things for us to try, which we will, because we really dont want to give him up, he is cute and sweet and we already had him obedience trained and I love him and dont want to give him up, but we are desperate!!!!! Please any more suggestions? Has anyone been through this???? Please help me and Churchill

Is he vomitting also? If its just bad diarrea, you may be introducing the food too quickly. You need to mix the boiled rice with the food slowly - adding the food a small amount at a time.

I would go with a different food as well. I'm not a lover of Iams but have several friends with OES with stomach troubles and the do well on Iams Low reside. Ask your vet about it...But again, whatever food you use, introduce it slowly mixed with the rice.

And until this problem subsides, can't you use baby gates and keep puppy in a kitchen area or confined? A place where he can see the family and be part of it but not have the run of the house?
No he is not vomiting just diarrhea. Thanks for your suggestion, we have never tried mixing a little of the dog food with the rice, will try that one tomorrow. How many times should I feed him?
Hi,
My guy has a pretty sensitive tummy, too and I had tried the nutro. If you like the brand, they do make a senstive stomach formula. Another trick that worked is to see if Churchill will eat some pumpkin. I buy the canned pumpkin, not the mix (that has spices, etc. in it), and add a couple spoonfuls with the food. He liked it after the boiled chicken and rice! Good luck, oh...is he drinking enough? With diarrhea, I always worry about dehydration.

Sorry that last piece of advice was from me, I forgot to log in

He should be fed according to his weight and the number of calories in each cup of his food. My puppy is 8 months old and weighs 80 pounds. I feed him 2 cups in the morning and 2 cups at night and sometimes 1 in the afternoon. he doesn't always eat all the food. Overfeeding will cause diarrear also. Split the feedings into at least two times to avoid any prolems with bloat and do not let him exercise vigoursly for at least an hour after eating, preferably two. I make mine rest at least half and hour before as well.

Yes, dehydration can become a problem with severe dirrear. I mix alittle pedylite in with his water to be sure he gets the electrelytes . Pedylite is found in the baby section of the grocery or drug store. Its for infants so its safe.

With his tummy so upset, maybe you can feed him a small amount a few times a day and see how he holds that...remember to mix the rice in and use a little bit of food at a time mixed with it.
Good luck...
Oh you guys are so nice, thanks for all the advice and keep it coming, I want Churchill to be healthy, he only weighs 38lbs  I will try everything. Churchill says Thank You. Oh by the way how can I get a picture of him next to my name???
Hi, Just skimmed the replies so don't know what all was suggested...he may have a food allergy - my girlfriend's dog had diarrhea and lost her coat....so I suggest you check with the vet first. Once you have eliminated the medical causes - follow the vets recommendation. I don't recommend giving any meds or food except what he can keep down until you see the vet....the wonder drug is Flagyl...
derby has this problem too try some fresh coconut seems to be helping
George is a bit like this too but I have started to give him goats milk live yoghurt (Greek style as it's his favourite!!) Just a little bit each day and it seems to calm his stomach down!

If I give him anything beef or beef flavoured he is porrly with it!
Are you sying he is 38 pounds at nine months old? How big is he? That seems extremely underweight for a nine month old dog. You say he's been to the vet....I'm thinking he may ahve tapeworms or giardia. Sometimes they are tough to see in one stool sample. Maybe you can gather up two or three and bring them to the vet for checking...

I know you say Vet bills can be a problem for you. Not sure where you live, but there are clinics like a Bide-a Wee that are less costly. Even some rescues can recommend a lower cost Vet clinic. Also, if you explain to your vet your financial situation, perhaps they can let you pay the bills over a course of time instead of all at once. My vet does that for some people who have multiple dogs. You can only ask!

Sounds like Churchill did not ahve such a nice life before you. Glad he found you for a home!!!
If you're up to the idea you could also put him on a raw food diet. We have had enormous success with that and can manage his food ourselves. If you're interested I'll send you some links.
Wow, 38 pounds 9 months does seem very small. Does Churchill have a very small frame, or is he grossly underweight? Just so you can get an idea, my vet told me that Oliver should gain about 10 pounds a month until he is finished with his growth sperts, so at 6 months, he is about 60 pounds.

Oliver had giarredia when we got him. He wouldn't always have runny stools, but he did not gain the weight he was supposed to either. Giarredia can be very hard to detect. At least stool samples are cheaper than blood work!

I would try a 7 day switch for his food. Gradually increase the amount of new food into his diet. I even do this when I get a new bag of dog food, from my professional experience each bag could vary slightly, but could cause problems for the digestive system.

Thank you so much for taking care of Churchill. You will have a life-long companion that will make you laugh and cry. He will worm his way into your heart, lap, and maybe even your bed!
First of all...I'm glad Churchhill is with you now since it sounds like he didn't have the best life before he came to live with you.

The only experience I have ever had with one of my dogs having bad diarriah is when my Cocker, Max...(he was about 2 at the time)..had Giardia, which can cause horrible diarriah. Our vet put him on meds and it cleared up...but it took a while. At the time...we had taken him swimming in a creek at the park and that's where we think he contracted it in the first place. It's some sort of virus that they can get from drinking water out of places like creeks or lakes...or (I think) they can catch it from other dogs or being where other infected dogs have been. Anyway...I just wanted to tell you that I hope everything works out for you and that Churchhill gets to feeling better really soon. Poor guy!!

Please keep us posted as to how he is doing.
I think your boy needs a complete vet check including bloodwork. 38 pounds is very light for a 9 month old sheepie unless the parents were real small too.

If he has not been treated for parasites recently, I'd ask the vet if Panacur would do any harm. Please read this-

Do you know his background? Maybe he's a bearded collie mix, which could explain the smaller size. Does he have a tail?
Thanks everyone. He is pretty tall but only skin and bones. We used to have an OES 30 years ago and Churchill appears to be purebred, but since we were lied to, I cant tell you what the parents look like. Yes we have taken him to the vet, but nothing seems to help except for the rice and ground beef or turkey. We dont know anything about his background
all I know is that Christine and David Martell now selling Burmese Mn dogs under a different website and phone are irresponsible, dishonest and mean with animals, we should have goten a hint when she was in such a hurry to get rid of him, she told us it was because she was having another litter and he was the only one left from the last one. I feel so bad for Churchill all the trauma he has gone through in his 9 months. I did as one of you suggested and called 4 vet clinics in the area and no one wants to work on a payment plan, I cry as I write this because I know he needs serious intervention, but we can't give it to him, so rice and beef it goes, but it cant go on forever. Even with this major problem we are glad we took him from that horrible place, I just wish we could do more. Sorry for carrying on but I am really upset. Does any of you live in Candia? I am asking because I would like to do some detective work and report those jerks to the humane society. Thanks and keep the advice coming, but I just dont know.
I'm so sorry for you and churchhill. Your last post made my cry. I wish we could make all breeders have to have a license and get annual inspections. Its so unfair to the animals and their owners. Another thing you can try is to see if one of the vet's accept post dated checks. Thats how our vet does things. They set the check aside until a certain date. Giarda is a horrible bacteria that can cause severe stomach cramps and diarrehea even in humans. The bacteria itself looks like it has eyes when looked at under a microscope. I dont know if you have ever seen Ren and Stimpy, but on one of their shows one of them got sick from giarda. My micro professor had us watch that show in class once.   Just wanted to bring a smile to you because I feel bad you are having such a tough time with your new puppy.

You might check into CareCredit to see if you qualify for funding so you can get Churchhill healthy as he can be. It could be a food allergy, parasite, digestive problem, etc. and the first step is finding out which it is. Veterinary services are one of the things they lend money for.

It's recommended by places like the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) and several veterinary medical associations.
I can't offer any more advice, but good luck. Poor Churchill, (and you). Please keep us updated.
Worms or giardia - absolutely should be checked for all of these. 38 lbs is small!! My 11 month old is 65 lbs.
Poor little guy :( . If the problem is giardia ask your vet about GiardiaVax, it's a series of two injections given about two weeks apart. I don't know the current cost but several years ago it was $16.00 per injection and worked wonders for my four. Have they given him Panacur?
I think I remember that Giardia is a little difficult sometimes to identify - but the vet should be able to see it on slides...also giardia usually results in bloody diarrhea!!! Please go to the vet to get him checked out NOW.
For lower cost care, try the local Humane Society, Bide-A-Wee, a local rescue group and inquire of where to find lower cost health care for the puppy. Hope he's doing better.
it could be Parvo. I bought a puppy from a sketchy breeder, and my dog came home with me, and had diarrhea no matter what we fed him. then he started to sleep all day until he woke up to have an accident in the house. the vet wanted $3,000 to put him on IV, so we couldn't afford it, and he fought through it on his own. to this day, we aren't 100% sure if it was Parvo, because they never knew what to tell us. He still gets diarrhea occasionally, but he at least has the courtesy to ask to go out immediately. but you might want to have a Parvo test. and Coccidia ? (parasite infection that causes diarrhea)...

it sucks, but the only way to be sure is for the vet to do tests. otherwise, try and wait it out and try different dog foods (maybe Flint River Ranch, etc).

Also try mashed Pumpkin, white rice, and boiled chicken to ease the diarrhea.
I'm responding to Churchill. There is a website where you can ask for donations for Churchill. It's www.indiegogo.com Personally, I think people might be more comfortable to send the money directly to your vet if its ok with your vet but I have never used indiegogo so I'm not sure how money coming in is kept track of or if it is sent first to indiegogo and then you or your vet. If you post on the site, let me know and I will take a look and hopefully others on this list can help too. :)
