And out goes the A/C in the car.....

It started with a loud whooshing noise along with some other kind of shreaking noise. I thought it was the radio, but it was much louder.
But some sheer coincidence when I lowered the radio volume the noise stopped. So I was a bit confused.

Luckily I was a block from my house coming back from picking Hayley up from school. No more noise until I put the car in park. Then it starts making a sputtering noise. I turn off the engine and see smoke coming from the hood.
I open the hood to find the source of the smoke, but could not pinpoint it.
Just smell a burning smell. My neighbor comes over when he sees the little bit of smoke. He says it smells like a belt.

Billy comes home and hour and a half later. He looks at the car and finds out there is something wrong with the A/C. The car runs fine without it on, but the engine rumbles, sputters and shakes when turned on. :(

I call Honda and explain the problem. The tech says he's 100% sure that the compressor seized on the A/C. According to him it is a common problem on the CRV.

So nervously I ask the cost of replacement.
$1,400!!! (It only cost $2500 to replace our house A/C and that thing cools 1500 sq ft and that included a new furnace and compressor unit.) I call Dad for advice, he tells me to call his mechanic who quotes me $900.00. Okay a little bit easier to swallow.

So tomorrow morning me and the kids will head out of the Desert in a car with no A/C on a 100 mile journey to Orange County. :twitch:

The mechanic said he may not get it finished tomorrow, so in that case Dad will lend me his car.

With any luck I will be driving my own car home tomorrow WITH A/C!!!

Now for the weird part. My friend needed Dental Work done. So I referred him to the Dental Discount Plan I have. Talking to him tonight I found out by signing up for the plan he saved exactly $1,400!!! He was thrilled because he was going to have to spend over $3000.

Can you ask the friend for a 10% cut on the savings? :D :D :D

At LEAST a dinner.

Hey, let me ask you this: a 200 mile round trip in the desert has to have real as well as "soft" costs; can you try to negotiate the price down with the local mechanic a little bit? It would be "cool" (sorry) if you could get it done locally in case something goes terribly wrong in a week or two.

Actually he did say he wanted to take us out to dinner for my great advice.

As for the cost... NO! That was a price directly from the dealership.
They always want to sell you more than you need. The guy even said... Oh when we do that we should also replace something else... which Billy as an A/C tech knows that they were trying to make more money and that would have been on top of the $1400 quoted.
I wouldn't trust anyone here in the Desert to work on it.
Dad really trusts his mechanic. I'd rather pay $900.00 plus $40 for a tank of gas than pay $1,400. The $900 includes everything that needs to be done.

Also I have 200 mile towing from AAA so if god forbid something does happen I can have it towed back to the OC for free. 8)
I hope you have an early in the a.m. trip! I'd be surprised the car will be ready, but God bless your father! Now tred lightly for the next few months, no broken, chipped or whatevers for awhile.

Last time I had car trouble I was transporting a sheepdog to Phoenix in the summer and the engine kept over heating. I turned off the AC and used the HEATER to dispell excess heat. Dog and I were very happy to get out of that car into the desert "cool." You can bet your bippy I left for home at 4 a.m. the next a.m. ...it was only 90 at that hour
yuck! And of course it happens in the dead of summer when you need it most! At least it sounds like you can get it fixed pretty quickly. Drive safe!

When we moved out East, my hubby drove his car from CA to VA in August. His car AC didn't work--AND and windows didn't go down more than an inch or two. That was a warm trip (thankfully I drove my own car a month later!)
Is this something that the warranty just doesn't cover, or is your car out from under its warranty? Thats the kind of luck we have, nothing will go wrong at all, then as soon as the warranty runs out, poof, a major boo-boo. Good luck with getting it fixed!
8) good luck on your trip with no A/C 8)

wendy and gismo
Ughhhhhhhhhh... I do not wish to be in your shoes. I couldn't do it.
:phew: The car is at the shop and we are at my parent's house.
The drive wasn't too bad. Hayley kept telling me to put up my window. Well actually she kept saying close your door. I explained that we had no A/C but I don't think she understood. I have definitely been through worse .... coming back from Texas a few years back we were driving on Rte 40 descending from the mountains of AZ into CA and out goes the A/C in Death Valley! 8O It was 118 degrees.

Warranty ran out 12,000 miles ago. I only had a 75,000 miles warranty. I never had a problem while I had the warranty.
Oh gosh! Never a dull moment! $1400 must be the amount of the week
Well, at least you get yours fixed. I have an HVACR man "in residence" and the AC in MY car has been on the fritz since last summer

Yes, but hubby is too busy to do it. If I didn't fix it I would literally be cooking my brain everytime I got into the car. 8O
If it was just me maybe I would hold off. But I definitely could not drive the kids around in the car.
Oh yeah... and my car won't be ready until tomorrow afternoon. So I get to drive th USS Enterprise home (dad's Chrysler Town and Country)
It reminds me of the space shuttle!
That sucks. My husband's car is in the shop for at least a week maybe longer. Luckily it should be covered under warranty. Hope your car is ready soon!
 No AC!!!!! Gasp and you live in the desert, oh I felt for you.

Can't offer you anything but my sympatheties and of course I'm thinking about you!

What is that dental plan, & is it available in NJ?

Sorry about the AC. Was once on a train out of NYC with NO AC on the hottest day of the summer! Was very close to passing out!
What did we do before AC :!: :)

A Dental Plan is not insurance, it is a discount plan available to anyone. It's available all over the US.
It offers up to an 80% discount of off regular prices. The best part about it is you can have a preexisting problem and then will take you on immediately. The cost for one person is 11 a month or $19 for unlimited people in one household. They don't even have to be married or related.
(Actually it's not only a Dental Plan it's also a prescription drug discount program, Vision (incluing Non prescription sunglasses), Orthrodontic and Chiropractic.

I don't know what they did before A/C but there is no way I would be living in the Desert without it.
I get my car back tomorrow! :go:  :yay:
My Dad's car makes me very nervous, so I haven't been driving unless I really have to.
It also feels like it's going to tear apart if you go over 80 mph. (which is the usual speed on the I-10...Okay the speed limit is 70 mph but if you're doing 70, you better be in the slow lane or you'll get run off the road.)
It shakes like the Space Shuttle seems to on reentry into the atmosphere. :cow:
I think I'll stick with my foreign cars. :P
Well welcome to my no AC having in the car world! I don't even ko w y mine doesn't friggin work. I dont live in cali but it gets pretty hot in my neck of the woods!

And I'm suffering sympathy pains with my mom who is going thru menopause. I am alwys hot like she is!

I am secrely jealous of all you peeps who are cold all the time. I'm the oppsoite-always hot. And I want to live in the south lol. Sum1 suggested I just need free-on but everytime i want to take it to the mechanic for what i htink is a relativley simple proecedure something pops up! Frusturating and now summers almost gone...
I bought my second KIA van last year in May. Two weeks later it is over 90 and very humid and I have my gradchildren with me when the AC goes out. I take it to the dealer where they remove all of the freon and send me home because they say they need a part to fix it. I call back and tell them this is not going to work. We find out while they have it that the AC was put in backwards! I should have gotten a new van then. It has been back for many things since. I just picked it up last night. They had it for 4 days this time and not everything is fixed. They will call me when the part comes in for the sliding side door. This is becoming very frustrating. I understand how you feel. So sorry. Hope everything gets fixed. The dogs are not very understanding when the AC doesn't work. My grandaughters aren't either.
Wow, I can't believe they put the A/C in backwards. 8O
How frustrating with all the rest of the problems too. :(
I would have demanded a loaner car with the A/C problem. Especially on a two week old car. I would have walked into the dealership area and started making a big scene. But that's just me.
