How does your dog react to the muzzle?

Mulligan was muzzled once when we first got him, as we were unsure of what his reactions at the vet would be. Jake was muzzled occaisionally when he had an ear infection, for instance.

Jake used to stiffen and get vicious when muzzled. If you wanted to get him going, just put the muzzle on him. He never tried to take it off, he just got barking mad -- drooling growling, stiff trying to bite. It was kinda scary.

I found our muzzle last week when taking out some grooming tools and tried it on Mulligan.
He just tried to get the muzzle off. :D
He's such a great dog. :hearts:

See my avatar? If we put a hat on Jake, he was fine with it! If we put on on Mulligan,
he just tries to get it off.
He's such a great dog.

Walter reacts just like Jake. I know i've said it before, but the most afraid I've ever been of Walter was when I muzzled him and for training. :?
Chummie actually calms down and is much less likely to snap when she is wearing a muzzle. I use one every time I put her in the car. Without the muzzle, she will try to bite me every time (because it hurts to be lifted). With the muzzle, she doesn't snap at all.
they just had to use one on derby when they took his xrays but all i could hearwas derby crying in the back i couldn't watch
We bought a muzzle for Yuki when she was a puppy and was hanging out with my SIL's shih tzu. Both were exactly the same age, but my SIL AND I would freak out when Yuki would playfully try to stop her CRAZY dog from chewing on her. she knew to be gentle but we thought it would be the right thing to do with a toddler also running around, and Yuki still had puppy teeth.

The handful of times we used it, I couldn't keep it on. She would instantly go dead. Be extremely calm but look so miserable. So I basically said screw it... I rather sit next to Yuki all day and watch her than make her wear it!
We had one for Callie when she was a big puppy, more to keep her from chewing on Sadie than for any serious reason. She never did like wearing it, but she didn't really freak out. She would just paw at it and have this look in her eyes like it was hurting her feelings that we were making her wear it. I usually couldn't tolerate that very long.
It hasn't been out of the dog stuff box in at least a year...
Ro wore one after becoming food aggressive and not knowing what else to do. When food was around (esp. anything meaty in the trash or a cookie or something) she would rip in to Jo (poor ol' girl). She never hurt Jo but it freaked me out and once Jo got me when she was trying to fight back -- oh, now I'm going to have a bad reputation on the boards . Anyway, we tried a few different muzzles for Ro and the best was just two pieces of Velcro. One went around the back of her head and one over her mouth. It was loose so she could eat, bark *which I wish it had stopped her from doing*, drink, give kisses and do everything a dog needs to do but it stopped her from biting. She wore it for quite a while and I think as she's gotten a little older she's just settled down because she hasn't worn it in some time. Once since baby Z came home she went after him over chicken in the trash (this is obviously not my doing because I know not to put anything "tasty" in the garbage and leave it out) but almost instantly she backed off like she realized that her reaction wasn't good.

As for putting it on, it's never been a problem. If I take her in the car I still put it on because even though she's a doll in the car, Jo is HORRIBLE! and I would hate for Jo to step on her or upset her and have to try to break up a dog fight while driving . The girls are going to get their shots tomorrow at the vet so I need to actually find it tonight. Because the muzzle still lets Ro do everything she would normally, she doesn't seem to mind it on. The first one we tried was a soft, mush muzzle but it didn't fit right and bothered her eyes. This one is really cheap and doesn't look like she even has a muzzle on so I can walk them together with Ro wearing one and people don't think she's vicious (which really she isn't -- but I guess no one wants to think their dog is...but really food is the main issue and like I said Ro is so much better).

Thanks Ron! That makes me feel a bit better ;)
We had a muzzle for our GSD that passed in Dec. She was very protective of the family and we would have to put it on her when company would come because I didnt trust her. When we would put it on her, she would put her ears down, cower and just lay in her corner like she was in trouble. Now we have tried it on Cheyenne and she bats at it trying ot get it off lol and her tongue hangs out. Funny dog. Now hubby put it on Beaford a few months back and he panicked so bad it worried me. Kind of like someone that is claustiphobic or something. But we were amazed at how small his snout really is LOL cant tell with all that fur and we are used to GSD with big snouts. :D The muzzle no longer exsists it was chewed apart by one crazy sheepie about 2 weeks ago. He found it on top of the crate and desided it was time for it to go :D:D:D

Growing up, my mom had this minature poodle that was very food aggressive and aggressive in many other ways. It seemed that it was always me that would get bitten by this crazy dog. I have so many scars. One time I was doing dishes and dropped a cake pan, not thinking, bent down to pick it up and got bit. He had to always be on a leash going outside, one day he got away from me and low and behold tried biting me the whole way back to the house. Just a few of the many biting incidents with him.

You see my mom had a stud male, and when she had bred him, this puppy was a result. He was going to be put to sleep because he didnt have the correct markings. She saw him in the corner all by himself and asked the breeder why and that is what she told her. (This was back in the day when they did stupid things like this. Glad they cant do that anymore.) Instead of accepting the stud fee she took the puppy. She never used Snowy for stud again after that.

This dog was attached to me tho and when I left home he went crazy trying to find me. Scratched his way through a basement door, tried to jump out of windows in the house etc. THey ended up having to put him down. Thats when I had my first love affair with a OES, ended up getting one and giving it to my parents.
