well derby has been limping on his front leg for a while now trying to hope it got better. being i have dolly with cancer and daytona with hips going well i finally when and took derby to the vet yesterday he starting growling and limping worse.. they took exrays and looks like ocd in the front shoulder, they are sending the xrays out to i guess a specalist, i heard the only way to fix this is surgery? anyone else been through this?
3 sick dogs in the house ..hum they say things happen in 3's
That's one I've missed. While we all hate surgery, if done by an orthopedic surgeon with years of experience, it should be fine. I assume your sheepie is still young as it is a condition of growing animals.......dogs--people, whatever. As long as that misc piece of bone or cartiledge is floating around in there, it will be a constant irritation, best to have it removed.
I do not have any experience with this, but I just wanted to say good luck! Wow-you poor thing-all three.

Keeping you in our thoughts!
What does OCD stand for? I thought this was going to be a post about Obsessive - Compulsive Disorder. Confused

I hope there is an easy fix for whatever ails him.
Osteochrondritis Dissecans
Osteochondritis dissecans, commonly known as OCD and osteochondrosis dissecans, is a disease of the cartilage that affects the joints in a dog’s body. In any joint in the body two bones come together and movement is allowed between them. Where the two bones meet, an exceptionally smooth area of cartilage covers their surfaces. This acts as a cushion and protects the underlying bone. If anything disrupts this smooth cartilage surface, movement of the joint becomes painful. In a dog with OCD, this cartilage is damaged or grows abnormally. Instead of being attached to the bone it covers, it separates or cracks, causing great pain. In some cases, small pieces of cartilage break off and float free in the joint. These pieces of cartilage do not die, but rather continue to grow and increase in size. These are known as joint mice. Approximately 15% of all dogs will develop OCD.
More common in large breeds and in males more than females (due to size differences).

I only know because we are seeing more of it in kids - especially the athletic ones.
Hi thats too bad hope everything is ok

haha...thanks val for asking that question, i was thinking the same thing Confused

poor baby...is there anything that they can do?
thanks for the update on ocd .. i thought i knew about it .. still waiting for the second surgeon to look at his xrays.. my vet said in 25 years she only had done 2 surgerys of this type.. so still seeing what will happen
I read that three times, then I was going to ask, and I started to post three times, but each time it didn't feel just right, so I went back and read it three times again...
I noticed something in my Border Collie when he was about 4 months old and it turned out to be OCD, so he had surgery on both and he is now 4 years old and perfectly fine. My OES had to be put down at 6 months, but he also needed a total hip replacement. I would do the surgery.
I am sorry to hear about Derby. Is the surgery always an option that corrects it? Hopefully Derby will be road to healing soon!
