Getting a Show Puppy in September

Hi! I'm new to the forum and expecting to get my OES puppy in September. I've been out of the breed for a loooong time but had one through my formative years (12-24). I showed another breed since 1983 so I will be looking for a lot of help. I would like to show this pup since I really enjoy the sport. I am also interested in OES as therapy since I work with special needs kids (primarily Autism and PDD). I'd be interested to hear from other folks who have had experience in this area. THANKS!

Several months ago I got an article from NCTE in my e-mail about dogs being used in Detroit Public Schools (I'm pretty sure it was Detroit anyway) to help students with their reading. As an English professor and and a dog lover I loved the article -- but not enough to save it . Although OES were not mentioned in the article, it was very cute and gave some links for those interested in pet therapy. I tried NCTE's site to see if I could find the article without luck but I did find another article that is similar and gives a link. It's worth checking out. article

Good luck with your new puppy :D
Welcome Julie and congratulations on the upcoming puppy!

Several sheepies on this forum are therapy dogs including Harry, Chewie, Guinness and Pearl. We would be glad to answer any questions you have. You might want to get in touch with Chewie's mom (Got Sheep) in MN or Guinness' mom (4dognight) in MD since they may be more familiar with therapy groups up north or east.
You should come to the Harrisburg show next month and chat with some of us.

Welcome to the forum!
Hi Julie welcome to the forum, looking forward to seeing & hearing about your new fur kid when it arrives and following how you are doing in the showring and therapy side with your new lil munchin.

Greetings from the land downunder. :D
Welcome to the forum. I have a son with Autism and my dogs are so so wonderful with him. I think OES would be great with special needs kids.
Welcome Julie and your soon to be puppy. :D

This is a great group of people, I'm sure you will enjoy it here.
We do lots with our Chewie - he is being shown in the breed ring, starting obedience in rally (1st rally entry this coming weekend), passed his CGC and TDI certification, as well as his herding instinct test.

You had mentioned an interest in doing therapy dog work with your pup - it is a great thing to do. A nice change from all the competitve things. I have been involved with the Therapy Dogs International group for about 22 years now. Chewie is my 4th therapy dog. (the others were my german shepherd, my retired 14 yr old chocolate lab, as well as my current 2 - basset Simon and Chewie) I don't know that it really matters so much the organization - find one near you and become involved! It is a super thing to do - the dogs and I really enjoy it.
Hi Julie---

Welcome! We are kindered spirits as I too am new to the forum waiting for my puppy to train for therapy.

She will be here within the next week, (fingers crossed) (worried) (BUT very happy) :D :D

I have been involved in various therapy programs for the last 20 years and I LOVE it!!!! I have always wanted to volunteer but I am a tad shy and don't like to draw attention to myself. This is perfect for me. I feel we (Pearl, my OES and I- and- before her, Millie, my Beardie, and I) do make a difference.

The great thing is...NOBODY remembers ME!!! But from week to week all our clients remember Pearl (as it should be)... I am only her chauffer to get her to and from her visits..once we are there, she takes over. Although we do work as a team, these therapy dogs, develop a sense of what the clients needs very quickly. In addition they show such unconditional love and compassion, that it continually amazes me!!

It seems hard to believe, but a couple years ago, we were taking a walk and as a car passed I heard..
"PEARL!!!" The car stopped and this women came over to us, bent down and started petting Pearl. She explained that a couple months back her aunt was in the hospital and we visited her. She proceeded to tell me that, after we left, all her aunt talked about was Pearl...How funny she was ...How many tricks she knew...How soft and clean her coat was... The women said she hadn't seen her aunt smile that much in a long time. Then she told me her aunt died a few days later--- I told her how sorry I was and how I was glad Pearl could give her some happiness. She thanked me, hugged Pearl and said she would never forget her last visit with her aunt because of Pearl.

Julie, if you get into a therapy program, these little miracles with happen almost every time you go to a visit.....

Sorry this is so long.....can you tell I "LOVE" my visits????

Good Luck and keep us posted!!!!!
Val
