Harry Potter Book 7--SPOILERS

You have been warned. This thread is for discussing HP and the Deathly Hallows. Spoilers will abound. DO NOT READ if you want to be surprised by the book.

I still do not understand why Snape hated Harry so much. Snape obviously loved Lily or at least had a deep friendship with her until he turned to the Dark Arts. Why did he hate her son so much?

I am so thankful Neville survived. I am so peeved that Draco Malfoy lived--I really wanted him to die. And although I never liked Dobby, I cried when he died. I cried when Mad-Eye died. I cried at other spots and I never cry at books! But oddly enough, I did not cry when Fred died. And I do wish Neville was the one who killed Bellatrix.

And I think JKR kinda cheated by introducing the concept of the Deathly Hallows. She had the Horacruxes thing going--the story did not need the Deathly Hallows. And speaking of Horacruxes, there were several places in the book where one character or another said "we have x number of Horacruxes" but never said what they were! And it was never stated that Gryffindor's sword was a Horacrux.

I want to know what happened to Luna. And George Weasley. And the Dursleys. I want to know where everyone was 19 years later.

I did not like the book as much I wanted to and I think part of that is because I'm depressed that it is the last one. And the epilogue truly closes the door on Harry Potter.

Auntie Paula,

I don't read these books, so I don't know the characters you mentioned. BUT! Did Harry die?

(Send me a PM is you don't want to spill the beans here! Thanks!)
Deborah, since this is a spoiler thread, I will tell you. Harry does not die. After all, he is "The Boy Who Lived."
snape & harry deal- think it was more like " he coul have been my kid/ why did she die for him/ only woman he ever loved dead cause of james child".. i got teary eyed when snape grabbed harry and said " look at me".. he wanted those eyes to be his last sight.. really sad

woot on neville what a lad eh.. was dead proud of the way she turned him out to be.. same with kreacher.. altho i was severaly narked at Dooby getting it =(((

and Harry did die.. but remember all the hallows were present with Harry being in possesion of 2 of them including the stone.. well its how i saw it anyways.. and the sword never was a Horacrux.. it was used to break them tho remember..

and i whole heaertly agree about the 19 years later bit.. what about everyone else???

maybe its just an opening in case she decides to do more.
Umm...

I didn't get that the gryffindor sword was a horcrux. Yes Nevil used it to kill Nagini, who definitely WAS the last horcurx.

Here's my count of horcurxes:

The diary of Tom Riddle
The Gaunt family ring
The Locket
The cup of hufflepuff
The diadem of Ravenclaw
Nagini the snake
and of course Harry himself

I don't remember reading anything about the sword???

I think snape doesn't like Hary because A) he's James' son and B) he wishes harry was his son instead. So there's a lot of jealousy and loss associated in snape's mind with Harry's existence.

I did enjoy the book. I think it was her best, though certainly her saddest. I was crushed right away when hedwig died, and each person who got hurt or killed just made me sadder. Still, I enjoyed the book. I thought the hallows were an interesting diversion... sort of like the red herring you throw into the mystery novel... will it come into play or not?

I LOVED the scene where Harry and Dumbledore talk at King's cross station. Probably simply from the fact that I just wanted dumbledore to be able to talk to Harry one last time. I do wish that she had written in more about the rest of the side character's future. Maybe there will be some short stories? Where Luna finally finds her scrumple horned rumpledydoowha thingy. Or a day in the life of George Weasley. There are lots of possibilites. Sigh.
Karen, I'm sure you're right about the sword not being a Horocrux. I don't always read for comprehension the first time--I just wanted to find out the ending! I had it in my head that there was a Horacrux for each of the 4 founders, so assumed the sword was one.

Yet another question. Harry tells his son "you were named for two headmasters, and one was Slytherin and he was one of the bravest people ever." Obviously he's Snape, but what was so brave about Snape that Harry (who hated Snape) felt he had to name his kid after him?

Obviously I have a lot of Snape anxiety. JKR didn't provide enough answers to my questions re: Snape!
I'm so confused.......

Deborah honey, you need to read all seven books!

If you start now, you'll be done by Sheepiefest!4.
Paula...all of my life I've had a reading disorder, which I have overcome to become a degreed accountant, and have had a successful (according to my standards) career.

That said....I hate to read. Its a terrible chore for me...so I am counting on you to give me the poop on Harry Potter!!!!!!!!

(Jewish guilt is a wonderful thing, ain't it???)
I, was also totally bummed at the end! I was disappointed, I dont even recall JKR mentioning who was headmistress or master, so i assume it's McGonagall, which is boring lol..could at least of been one of the main characters!

Overall I think the film is going to be the best! All the action. It was also fantastic that Kreacher came around in the end, too - That of which made my day
I'm finally done with the book.... It may as well have been called "Harry Potter and the Dead Eaters Killing Spree"

I went shock after shock as I saw how many died. I was very sorry about Doby, and my heart sank when Snape died... he did not deserve to die that way. I was hoping he died as a hero... and that coward of Voldemort, did not even have the guts to kill him himself.

About why Snape disliked Harry... There's the duality of the relationship. His only love died because of him, and he's the living image of his enemy. But he has her eyes, and it reminds him that he is the son of the one he loved. He must protect him but he reminds him of what he did all the time. I bet you require a great deal of self control not to lose when confronted to that. Snape was my hero... I loved his account of what happened and how much he loved Lily. I guess it's because I think that every issue always has two sides and there is truth on both sides... there is no true good and evil.

I'm not quite sure what to think of the end. Everything was fine until he died and visited king's cross... then came back. But it makes sense, if he was the master of death, then he has the choice to come back. The chapter when he's ready to die is one of the best in the book!

What I found totally lame was the epilogue, I wish it was not so "touchy feely" and gave an account of what happened to everyone. I gave me "happy ever after" aftertaste, but as Danita mentioned a long time ago, it's a children's book after all so it needs a happy ending.

Why not pick up the audiobooks from the library? The performance by Jim Dale is superb!

I was a bit miffed over the death of Fred, Tonks and Lupin. I feel like she rushed over them. Fred should have gotten a bit more tribute.

And what was up with Molly killing Bellatrix? There was nothing in the series that laid any groundwork for that. She'd never done anything but household magic. I know that she was painted as being concerned for the safety of her family, but jeez, there was a whole castle full of death eaters to go after. It didn't make any sense to me for her to go after Bellatrix. I would have liked it if Neville or Tonks had killed Bellatrix.

Yeah, I have my doubts about the whole Snape thing too. Obviously it took some guts to be a spy for the good guys. But after Dumbledore's death Snape was pretty useless since he had no contact with anyone else in the Order. He didn't do anything really heroic that would have redeemed him.

But I was really happy with the Kreacher, Luna and Neville plotlines. I'm going to have to read the book again just to catch all the stuff I missed the first time.
Deborah, I agree with Saul. Get the audiobooks! You can listen while you work out on the treadmill.
Wow! That's brilliant! I actually NEVER thought about audio books!

Thanks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

What I found totally lame was the epilogue,

I agree. While I understand this was a story about a boy growing up without parents and his "family" of friends and teachers teaching him about love, manhood, responsibility and the evils in the world, I would have like to have more grounding in the end. It was a lovely seven book journey but where did people end up, doing what, what changes were brought about, if any, in wizard society.

I think he did redeem himself. Just the fact that he continued to fight for the "good guys" even though everyone assumed he was a true Death Eater after killing Dumbledore is a big deal. He was in jeapardy of being killed by both sides. The Order wanted him for being a traitor and killing Dumbledore and if the Death Eaters would have found out where his true loyalties were.... Yet, he never attempted to defend himself nor did he feel the need to tell anyone what was really going on. That had to take a lot of self-control.

As far as the physical ways he attempted to help I guess the most obvious was sending the doe to lead Harry to the sword but he also attempted to save Lupin from a Death Eater on the night they moved Harry...just got George instead.

Here is my question though--how did the Gryffindor sword get back to Hogworts? I know that Neville used it to kill the snake but I thought that the Griphook had taken it at Gringotts?

As far as the Epilogue goes...Yes, it was pretty cheesy but I did like knowing what had happened to people. I was surprised that out of all the new generation of kids that were mentioned no one was named after Fred. I get the names of Harry's kids (though Albus Severus really caught me off guard). But what about Ron and Hermione's kids? Rose and Hugo?? I kept waiting for either Fred's namesake or the name of some ancient wizard or witch from one of Hermione's favorite books. Oh Well.

All and all, I liked the book. I'm sad that it is the last one and I'm a little afraid of what the movie version will be like...there is a lot of ground to cover and a lot of violence that could easily be overkill (no pun intended) in a move but then again I always like the books better!!

I had forgotten about the doe, that's a good point. I guess I just wanted Snape to do something spectacular for redemption, but he did do a lot of behing the scenes stuff.

As for the sword, I think that Griphook did take it, but Dumbledore told Harry that the sword would appear any time a true descendant of Gryffindor was in need, which is how Harry pulled it out of the Sorting Hat in the Chamber of Secrets. Remember, Voldemort put the Sorting Hat on Neville's head and then had it burst into flames. Then, "the flaming hat fell off him and he drew from its depths something silver with a glittering ruby handle".
Did anyone see the JK Rawiling interview on the Today show this morning? In it she said that Harry and Ron revamped the Office for Aurrors and that Hermione is high up in the ministries office of misuse of magic or something like that. She also said maybe she would eventually write an encyclopedia of all of the characters and what happened to them.
My only question is who was Teddy kissing at the end. I have to assume it was Bill and Fleur's kid, but it didn't directly say that.
Snape dies??? Snape was in love with Lily??? Snape kills Dumbledore???? Bill & Fleur have a kid??? Fred dies??? Hedwig.......

Ooooowww I really wish I had some self control & didn't read this thread. Twice

Starting the book next week lol

Yes, I know what you mean. Snape didn't physically do anything so that everyone knew without a doubt of his contribution and sacrifice. I had been waiting for something too.

Ahhhh!!! That makes sense! I had forgotten that about the sword. I actually had a hard time remembering details of the previous books. It has been too long since I've read them!!

ROFL!! Maybe we're just throwing things out there for those who lack the self control not to read the spoilers!! The real thread is hidden...

I also wanted Snape to do something spectacular... he's my hero. He was very brave by continuing Dumbledore's orders after all he had to go trough. He was looking for a way to redeem his sins and forgive himself for what he had done. The way I see it, he did when he he showed Harry his deepest memories and looked into his eyes looking for Lily's forgiveness, and saving Harry from the hatred he felt for Snape by showing him his side of the tale.... I felt heartbroken when he died =(
Yay! I finally finished so I can read this thread now and discuss.

I definitely agree that the death of Lupin, Tonks and Fred were both glazed over too quickly, and I thought, seemingly unnecessary unless she has something else in mind. The parallels between Harry's parents dying fighting, and Lupin and Tonks both dying leaving their newborn son made me wonder if JKR was planning something for Teddy. Like someone else said, it wasn't really explained who Victiore was, though we could infer. Seems like she left it nice and open...

Right

The end seemed rushed. Granted the book was long, but it was almost a watered down ending. I think I could have done without the epiloge. Just ending with Harry saying he's had enough......what was it.....adventure.....in his life.

As to the kid's names......what were Hermione's parents names? Mentioned in first book I believe. Just wondering if that's where the names came from.

You pretty much nailed my feelings there... The ending seemed unpolished and missing details, but it's a good ending. I was hoping Harry to die (Which he did) but the way he came back was OK... after all he became the master of death.

I really hope she keeps her word and closes down this chapter and starts something else. I will hate to see this franchise the way of many others when authors retake the themes and just make it feel cheap. If you guys are star wars fans you will know what I mean.
