Bum Clipping...Am I alone??

I can't seem to clip Matisse's bum properly no matter how many times I try.... I know to use the scissors in a vertical direction only, but I can't seem to get a good angle, and smooth lookin' rump...it looks a lil' choppy.

Does this take a while to learn ??? Is this normal....

You're definitely not alone. I feel like every time is an experiment, lol. Some times it goes well, other times I feel like I went too far. I try to clip in an asterisk pattern now with short quick clips so I don't do too much damage at once. It probably takes a lot longer this way, but it's safer! If it looks too choppy, I'll do some blending with thinning shears. I feel like I'm getting better... I think!
Make sure you get a real good fluff to the hairs before you trim, and refluff often as you are trimming.
Also, good light is a must!

I step back and look at the butt from all angles as I trim also.

If you mistrim - it is just hair and will regrow quick. That way you get a 2nd, 3rd, etc chance!!
I agree with got sheep, making sure it is thoroughly groomed out first is a must....
There are a couple of ways, for adults I find trimming in layers, following the curve but adding a slight angle, paralell to the spine, works best. For puppies, after grooming, I find it is easiest to trim from behind, use one arm to kind of pull all the hair from the top of the hips back and trimming kind of in a circle from the bum out works best.
Does that make any sense? I have to trim Bree again soon, maybe I'll get my daughter to take pics and post them step by step...
I'm no pro at it but I do feel each time I do it I'm happier with the results....
Here's how I do it:
Step 1: Put dog in car.
Step 2: Put self in car.
Step 3: Drive to Baltimore.
Step 4: Buy lunch for Susanne after she trims dogs. :P

Definitely a good brushing and fluff straight up then pull everything straight back. Put your hand on the rump to get a visual of the correct angle, refluff. Start just above the vent and trim your angle. Keep on that line and rotate your scissors back and forth to get a good "fan" going. So your first cut is at 12 o'clock, second cut at 11, third at 1, fourth at 10 and so on.
I'm really only supposed to practice on Toby. The mentors said that while they are still alive, they want to supervise me!!!

LMAO
LOL!!!

The mentors told me to go ahead and do Chewie's.......

I do, but not in the month before a show! I leave the bum trim to the real pros then!
the bum is the only area that i dont use the guard....i go out from the anus in a circular motion.....thank goodness i do...otherwise i wouldnt have noticed her boil...(boy does that sound gross)... :?
hahhaa...Mandy, that was funny....

I trust the professionals, and would rather my mentor do it for the time being. I was already warned about butt clipping a few days before an event...(anxiously awaiting entering my boy).

All I know is, it's not easy...LOL
It's still really exciting!!
