DOG CRUELTY IN VIRGINIA

I think we've hit the high note of dog cruelty with the recent headlines containing the grim stories of dog fighting, the gruesome killing of the dogs, and the complete lack of care for these poor abused animals. The mastermind of this horrendous ring of dog cruelty needs to go to jail for a long time - and with a lot of mental health intervention. Just reading about the atrocities perpetrated upon these dogs is sickening enough - witnessing or carrying out the fighting and killing of these animals gives pause to the question - how in gods name could anyone in their right mind bring suffering to an innocent animal, especially in this fashion.

I look at Patch sleeping soundly and contently in her usual position of laying on her back with all fours up in the air and think this is how a dog's life should be - wonderful and peaceful. She will be awake in just a few minutes as we on our way to a psychiatric hospital for a pet therapy visit - I love this dog, she is definitely my heart.

This is more of a vent post than anything else -

I know......doesn't it just make you sick to think about all the animals that have to suffer? Oh....don't get me going!!! GRRRR Sorry....but this is a very touchy subject with me....as I'm sure it is with others too.
The involvement of a Federal Grand Jury is about as serious as it can get.
Unfortunately, a couple of years in jail is all I've heard mentioned as punishment, if he is found guilty.
I like the idea of the sale of his property and the funds used to benefit animal rescue (no idea if this is legally possible though).

There is no possible punishment on Earth that is equal to what these unhuman people did to those poor animals.
Someone that can cause & or watch a dog suffer has issues that NO amount of mental health care can cure! I hope he gets what he deserves & more, not sure that he even cares about himself...he cannot have a heart, soul, or feelings! No punishment is severe enough

Have you all heard about the dog in NJ chained up, doused w/ gasoline, & set on fire? This poor doggie didn't die right away & suffered several more days despite the efforts of the best medical care. This poor baby still trusted. He still wagged his tail & licked the rescurers & medical staff.

The older I get, the less I understand
I was sick when I read about the executions of some of those dogs. Why is it that my Rheba can't give enough kisses and canot get enough love from anyone who enters my house.
It is unfortunate that this problem will probably never end. The root of the evil is again evident in this situation...MONEY!
I love the idea about the money from the home going towards animal welfare. I watched a special about dogs fights on tv and it mentioned how complex and huge the fighting world is and how it is almost impossible to stop because the fighting locations are so portable.

I work in an area that is pretty rough. I see dogs that are hurt from fighting all the time. Nobody thinks twice about the stray dogs in the area. It's sad that the area I work in in quite rough and I puchased pepper spray when I started my job because of the strays. The only reason is because there are so many dog fights (gambling fights and "disorderly conduct" fights) in the area and the local dogs are quite aggressive.

I agree. I also think someone who has gone as far as these people torturing, killing, and fighting the dogs cannot be 'cured.' They must be numb and cold-hearted to treat a living thing this way. Reading about it is bad enough - witnessing it would be unbearable for me. All of the animals rescued will undoubtedly be euthenized because of their aggressive behavior. It is all too shocking and disgusting for words.

I think the money is only part of it, it's also about power and dominance. The people who do these terrible things have no concept of right or wrong, a dog is just another "thing" to them. A top fighting dog is a status symbol, these people live in a world we will never understand.
"Vick is scheduled to appear in a Richmond federal court next Thursday, July 26. If convicted of all the charges, the 27-year-old football star could face up to six years in prison."

I was appalled when I read the indictment and heard the stories.

I just cannot understand how people can get a thrill out of cruelty. Vick deserves his day in court but if he's found guilty I hope the legal system uses him to send word that this evil sport won't be tolerated.
Cruelity in general-Horrible. But geez cruelity to poor, defensless animals makes me soo sick. My mom and I were talking about this earlier. Yea I'm just merely venting too...its just like abuse with children. That is soo low. Children are also defenseless little beings....Of course abuse towards nebody is just so horrible and sad.

My mom says I'm trying to save the world though....but maybe there should be more people like me-at least I think. And I will save the world...one day...
Individuals who engage in cruelty to animals as reported in the dog-fighting scandal can't empathize with other living creatures including humans. They are psychopaths or sociopaths and cannot be rehabilitated or treated. They remain dangerous and are likely to reoffend.
"...Michael Vick's lawyer said Monday the NFL star will plead guilty to federal dogfighting conspiracy charges, putting the Atlanta Falcons quarterback's career in jeopardy and leaving him subject to a possible prison term..."

First time that man has ever taken responsibility for his actions. Too bad it's federal prison. He deserves to be the pretty boy at a state facility.
I agree with you all. Nothing is bad enough to put them in jail but should be subject to the same treatmen the poor dogs got.

I have had 2 OES rescues that were mistreated. I know how hard it was to get them to trust us but got them to know we will never hurt them. They have a great life here.
I have been following the Michael Vick issue. I can't believe he is going to get away with possibly less than a year in jail! I read the articles and look at my pups.....I think of Bella who jumps in bed with me every morning and lays her whole body on top of mine, rests her head on my neck and gives me kisses. I think of JoJo, my deaf doggie, who loves to sit in my lap and get brushes and lovins, and i ache for the poor doggies in this situation. He and everyone involved in this horrific activity should have to answer to this travesty. My heart bleeds for those dogs......
I hope his cell mate is 6'8", weighs in at about 350, and thinks Vick is exceptionally cute
It would be nice for the Humane Society to get his house and turn it into a luxury no kill shelter. As part of the punishment, he could fund the project for life. This way some good could come from all this evil.
I just hope he has a special place in hell waiting for him.............Kathy
I heard the tail end of a news clip today that said Michael Vick fans...or should I say former fans...were sending their Vick jerseys to a humane society to use at kennel liners and blankets for the dogs awaiting adoption. I thought that was a great story!
I read another story that he may face state charges. If he plays football agian for any team I would sudjest a boycot of that team.
I would let him play -- I think lots of 350 pound linemen and referees have dogs they love.

I'd love LOVE LOVE to see that happen, but I think you'd end up with a lot of the other players posturing about being "true sportsmen" and not going after him like they "could".

What I want to see is him go to one of the prisons that has the dog training programs for prisoners. http://www.coyotecommunications.com/dog ... ndogs.html

Those guys fall in LOVE with the animals they train....let's let them take care of Vick.

His name is so tainted that he will face discord wherever he goes - he is a broken man and will never outlive his bad reputation. In May during Derby week just before the Kentucky Derby, OJ Simpson came to town and was escorted out of a restaurant by the owner because he (owner) said he would not serve a man who murdered - hopefully this is the kind of life this dog torturer will also face - his bad deeds will not be forgotten.
