Weewee pad this!

OK. Here's the scoop on Pooh Bear--he likes to go outside (infact in the 6 days he's been with us, only 2 accidents and both were our fault) so of course in getting him prepared for alone time while we are at work, we are hoping that if he does have to go, he'll use the pads.

Our mistake. Take a look here. Any suggestions? Obviously, we like that he goes outside, but in case he has to go inside, we'd rather he use them instead of the floor! I'm going to test him and leave him alone today for a few hours...should I lock him in the crate or leave him in his "space"? We've taped them down but he picks them up...and shreds them. Even when we are not in the room.

LOL, oh boy you've got a fun time ahead. When he does wet--wherever--keep a small section and put it on the new peewee pad. Having a placed aready marked helpd identifiy "this is the place." Of course all bets are off if he shreds the pads first, LOL. Within a crate, he shouldn't pee if it is small enough. Larger area within the play pen can have a spot.
If he has good habits now I wouldn't mess with that.... will he have to be alone very long? If it is only 6 hours or so, I would crate him, eventually he will hold it all day. I am preparing to go back to work on Monday after being off all summer, and so I have been crating Dancer and Sky more through the day, so it's not a big surprise to them Monday. It's going well, they hold it all day, after going out at least 2 times in the morning to make sure all business is taken care of, then I took them out at 4pm yesterday, and no accidents. They have free roam all evening, and now since our new bedroom is so huge, I gate off a small section next to our bed so they can still sleep with us but not have enough room to find somewhere to pee. For the first week or so however I'm going to try t ocome home at lunch, so they will only have to hold it for 3 hours at a time, which Dancer is certainly capable of, and Sky should be at almost 3 months old. Sky is like your pup, she has had clean habits right from day one, Dancer is a clean dog, but I had a hard time getting to this point with her, as she learned to prefer linoleum to pee on for the longest time.
Josh,

I would crate him - not only for housebreaking purposes - but so he doesn't get into trouble. I would forego the weewee pads - I find they confuse the dogs and cause more problems with housebreaking.

Good Luck. Pooh Bear is quite a cutie!

I have trained St. Bernards to go on wee wee pads and it usually helps to buy the holder. It holds the pad in place and unless he uses his nails ...he can't really shred them.

With that said, there's also the option of getting a litter box. Some dogs go in doggie litter boxes (w/o the lid) found at any major pet chain store and stick little doggie litter inside (looks like small logs). I don't know how big your dog is, but if he's still relatively small ...this could work.

Oh course you can just monitor him and make sure he doesn't tear up the pad. When a dog already knows how to go outside, most don't want to go inside anymore or ever. .....so, you should stop taking him outside as much (2-3 days). This way you can actually see some results inside (restrict his area - no exceptions and look for circling ----sign they must go). They won't forget how to go outside. With a zillion other doggie scents outside, that's the last thing I've ever had happen when training.

This sounds gross, but after he pees outside, you could rub a little on the pad. CRATE HIM for "X" amount of time and leave him with only one option and that's to go on this wee wee pad. Whether you must keep him gated in the laundry room or bathroom ....training is a crucial time (no giving in.... and tons of patience). You can even try to get him to go on the wee wee pad OUTSIDE. Then slowly move the pad inside.

Just some suggestions!

May not be worth the effort since I'd only recommend this during the "puppy stage" as you said. :)
Luckily we are (knock on wood here) past this stage and he knows that his business it to be done outside. Still in training of course, but we solved the pad shredding by buying very cheap towels. For a while there, he was going only on the towels, but I can't remember the last peeing accident he had during the day.
