I hate our lawnmower!!!!!!!!

I can't get the EDGER to start. I can't get the lawnmower to start. I'm
literally sweating from head to toe right now and a huge sharp pain in my
ribs from pulling on that string to start it for THIRTY MINUTES! I would take a small breather and then try again.

Finally a man walked outside, and I asked him to start the lawnmower. He
COULDN'T!!!! He said his only guess is that I primed it too many times and
it needs to rest.

Is that probably it or do you think it's broken? How can you tell? There's plenty of gas and oil in it.

Oh my gosh, this is so small but I'm so emotional right now. The grass needs to be mowed! Someone come over to start it please!!

You may have flooded it - in fact it probably has. Give it some time and try again.

I hate when that happens! My weed whipper does that, but the mower is good. Surf awhile, do another chore and come back to it. :D
Don't worry...I'll send Izzie over...she loves to eat grass. :D She has never been to Alaska, and is always talking about how she wants to travel more :cheer:
I agree, I think you flooded it.
If the guy is still around see if he can try to start it again for you in a little while.
my theory would be this....if youve tried for over a half hour...and it didnt start...spend the next half hour trying to find a yard man...... :?
Leanne: Please get in touch with a lawn service and have them take care of your lawn. You have to many other things for you to do with lil J and lil bean...save your edger/lawnmower for when Mr J returns.
Some guy momma always told you not to talk to passed by... you know, wearing NKOTB MC HAMMER type pj pants with matching bandana.... so I chased him across the street, and he kept talking to me in what sounded like French. Weirdest experience ever.

I think he was saying I pulled the string too much even though I hadn't told him anything. (just by his motions) He also pointed to the primer and used the #3 to say only 3 times. He then was able to start it. I told him thanks and as I started to mow the grass... 5 minutes later it stopped. :(

I guess I do have to give it a rest for a few hours. The first man said 15 minutes. That guy is at work now.
Mine is a prime 3 times mower too!

I'm not sure why it stopped. Is there build up under the mower deck? The grass outlet plugged up? The grass too long and it bogged down?
Those are my usual problems.
You need a cute little LAWNBOY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
how big is your yard Joahaeyo?

i know the uk peeps will agree with me when i say this..electric mowers =D

plug it in.. turn it on and mow away.. have to be careful not to catch cord but its soooo much easier than a fuel motor.. i swear when we get our own little place im having one shipped over from home if i cant find one here.. atm we live in a huge apartment and yard service is paid for by the complex

=)
It's a small yard. I'm sure I could use the weed whacker thingy to do it all. the problem is the back yard (needs lawnmower).

anyway, i finally went door to door and got a guy who seemed to know what he was doing. he said when i try to start it tomorrow (b/c it's not working now) to knock on his door. he doesn't think it's broken, just flooded or whatever from priming it too much. he said he could tell it wants to start.

As far as the edger, I'm retarded and when he was trying to help me with that, he found the 'women one' my husband had bought for me to use while he was gone (a lot smaller, safer, etc).
It may be the spark plug...very easy to change too. Last summer I tried starting my lawn mower for a half hour, was so sore the next day. Got out the manual, and I realized i had not cleaned the oil filter or changed the spark plug in 3 years. You can buy a new filter, but when I went to the lawn shop they didn't have any in stock and just cleaned it with dish detergent. If you flooded it, it should be okay after 20 minutes......
I agree electric ,I got fed up trying to start the gas one and bought electric, no problems now :D

That's why most cords are bright yellow or orange.......so you see them.....and you mow away from the cord, not into it. That's OK, my father was famous for doing that too.

We had an electric for 7 years at the last house. Loved it! Easy to start. May not have been the best mowed lawn......at least for one studying turf grass science, but it was mown and that's all I cared.
I had a cordless mower that I loved so much. One of
our customers dropped it to have batteries put in and
decided it wasn't worth the price of the batteries - which
really weren't that expensive - and left it at our store. So
we brought it home and I just loved it. We could use it at
any hour, it hardly made any noise, and it ran for just over
an hour per charge. That was plenty long for our yard.

If you are going to replace your mower, my vote is for
a cordless. I wonder if you have some water in the line
somewhere - the face that it ran for a little makes me
wonder.

Shellie
J, NO cutting grass or weed-whacking for you ,,,,,your pregnant .....

But since I know how frustrating it is when you want to get something done and you sure don't want to wait for someone else to do it.....here is a little hint:

Stand behind your mower and put your hand on the bar and bring it down to the ground and hold it for a minute. When my mower floods due to over priming it and I do that it seams to help it drain out of the primer tube.
Next make sure if you have a oil/gas mix mower you mix up some fresh oil/gas mix and re fill your mower.
If all else fails ,go and get yourself a nice size sledge hammer and smash the snot out of it !

I did that to my weed-whacker and my husband went and bought me a new one :D ....
But my neighbors seen me smash it and was afraid to come out of her house 8O ....She said it wasn't the fact I was smashing the weed- whacker but the fact that I was smiling ear to ear. I told her it was something I have wanted to do for the last few years and It just felt soooo good. 8) 8) 8)
If there's a choke, make sure it's open when the engine is hot. In fact it should be partly opened immediately after starting, then opened as soon as possible as the engine warms.

The international symbol for a choke is two lines with a circle with a line going through it, representing a butteryfly valve... I'll find the art...

Here:

Find the manual and read it on engine starting procedures. If you can't find it at home or don't want to look for it, google it or go to the manufgacturer's website with the model numbers.

It really does help!
Dude, you're pregnant. Pay somebody to do that crap!

I was thinking the same thing! Of course trust Jill to get straight to the point!
Hey, I think you all missed it. I think its time for a new mower. You primed it, it didn't start, you primed it again(mine takes ten primes before it started) and it still didn't start, some strange man comes over and gets it started but it quites after five minutes. BINGO. If it was flooded the starting would have taken care of it. To me it sounds like you need to put that baby to rest. As for those darn weed wackers...grrrr. I can never get the string to come out and then I have to take the da&^ thing apart, pull a little string out and put it back together again. The sledge hammer sounds like a really good and fun thing to do.
FWIW, it rained all today (is still raining), but I'm very curious to whether or not the lawnmower will start or is broken.

It costs too much to do a yard as small as ours. I did and have been looking around for the teenagers that would do it, but they only do on post. This includes the volunteer boy scouts. Actually mowing, to me, is more relaxing than work. ...just never had this problem of starting it before. My neighbor and I switch off, so we actually do 2 yards, but it's still not bad. She works and has two young girls.

I won't ever try turning it on by myself again though. My entire right side (back next to spine) is numb. While you're actually doing stupid things (like me pulling the string for so long), you really don't think you're hurting yourself when you don't feel anything at the time.
