Do they really herd sheep?

Question for everyone. My wife and I have a 7 month old OES, Dexter. WE also have a less fortunate mixed breed dog who happens to be all white like a sheep and gets chased and herded about the house by Dexter. A friend of my wife and I has about 50 sheep he will let Dexter perform his instinct of herding to. This should be a Kodak moment for sure. But has anyone every let their OES herd before? Thanks 8O

LOL.... sure, my two girls tag team and herd me to the door, and to the couch, and around the yard....lol...
Yes, mine are the same way. They will herd the kids, the cats, and us. I would only guess sheep would be just as lucky. LOL OR, they would run in the opposite direction from fear of what the unknown sheep would do to them. I have heard that a lot of them will bite when they herd, mine only bump. It is only a matter of time before I have full knee replacement because of it. Just kidding, I hope.
I would love to see the pictures of Dexter herding the sheep. You are right a kodak moment for sure.
Welcome to the forum, please stick around and tell us more about Dexter and his furry sibling. Stormi and co.
Sounds like you may have a natural herder. Yes, sheepdogs do herd and often take part in herding competitions. Of course up against Border Collies they most often place down the line, but who cares? They are still doing what they were bred to do. Wouldn't it be wonderful to get your little one into training and herding competitions!!!??

As for bumping, that's they way the do their work. Yes, nipping sometimes, but more often "Move it Sheepface!" You must train them not to bump........but it takes time.
Alot of owners actively do "herding" with their OES! If you look on the front page of www.oldenglishsheepdogclubofamerica.org you can see one of the pictures.
Can't wait to see pictures of Dexter. I'm sure he'll love going out there and herding. When my husband's sister was taking care of his 2 other sheepies, she took them to a farm in IL where the woman let people practice herding. They had a blast. They were very proud of Buddy, he was the only dog that day that got the Ram to move...he bit him in the butt!! His sister was mortified that he hurt the Ram (who's name was Joe Cool) but the woman said no, that's exactly what they're supposed to do.

Maybe this explains why Lola will not only bump me, but also try to bite my butt :)
my girl loves to herd, it's all she wants to do at the dog park! she walks around the outside of the park slowly moving the other dogs together and when she gets them where she wants she goes and sits on the highest spot and watches them. once they move get scattered again she'll go back and do it all over. and she loves to do it to people, too.
I love going to the dog park when the german shepards and australian shepards are there. One day there were 6 herding dogs, all good sized, all trying to herd each other. Talk about funny. The uprights just stood back and laughed and laughed. What would we do without our best friends?
