Snape--good or bad????

I'm not at all excited about Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix movie but I am totally gacked about Book 7--HP and the Deathly Hallows.

My burning question: Is Snape good or bad? I want him to be bad, but I just know he'll turn out to be good. I don't like Snape at all (even though I adore Alan Rickman but I'm talking the books, not the movies). He's mean, bitter, and uses the past to justify his hatred of Harry. I do think he killed Dumbledore under Dumbledore's orders, which tells me he will turn out to be good.

Discuss amongst yourselves.

I want him to be bad, too. I will somehow be disappointed if he turns out good.

I'm looking forward to the book and the movie. I think the movies are pretty darn good adaptations compared to many other book to movie travesties that happen! They're fun and don't sway too far off the original story (although I did miss the house elf bit from the last one).
Yes, the movies don't stray much from the books but I like imagining instead of seeing. And I hatehatehate Dobby the House Elf. Creepy. I'm also weird in that I don't like the endings of the HP books--big showdowns that drag on too long and I know the wand fight at the Ministry of Magic in OotP will be the high point of the movie and take about half an hour to play out!

If Snape is evil, then he managed to trick Dumbledore which is just about impossible. But I think Snape will die a hero's death in Book 7. I really want Malfoy to snuff it. And I will cry if Neville dies.
I am so anxious for the book. Didn't I read in one of
the interviews that two of the main characters die in
this book? That alone is bothering me, but I think one
of them will be Snape.

As far as Snape being good or bad, I think it's the
ultimate cover. I think he has been good all along, while
seeming evil. I want to believe Dumbledore was all-
knowing and rightly placed his faith in Snape.

I do like the movies. I love that they have often been close to
how I imagine the books. Of course some things have to be
left out, there just isn't enough time in a single movie to
cover an entire book.

I am hoping Snape turns out to be good, I almost expect it.
Things shouldn't always be the way they seem.

Shellie
I agree. I want Snape to be bad because its been so fun disliking him but I think he acted on Dumbledore's orders and he's been on the good side all along. I also agree with what Shellie said--I don't want to believe that Dumbledore could have been wrong in trusting him.

It's funny- I was soooo recluctant to read the first book. We had bought it for my nephew when it came out (before it was insanely popular). When the mania started and adults started reading it I was like "Really, a kids book?". It's not the type of thing I would normally read so I held off for a long time. I finally broke down and of course was hooked!

Lol. I love that creepy elf. It's funny, I imagined him different when reading the book but I found that I liked the movie version better of Dobby than my imagined one. Mine was less creepy!
I guess I'm the odd one out here....I LOVE Snape! I want him to turn out to be good, to justify my liking him (and defending him in disscussions  ) all this time!
It's Christine posting under my moms name... I have a bad habit of finding things online that I shouldn't, and it seems I have stumbled across a spoiler for the last book. Of course there is no way to know if what it says is actually what it is the book... but if it is it should be quite the page turner! On of these days I'll have the restraint not to read the spoilers I find...
Dont forget to order it to be delivered to your home on release date... (benefitting oes.org! What could be better? :) )

Please see Harry Potter DELIVERED to your home on release date
I really want Snape to turn out to be bad - I hate to see such a great evil character ruined! And I love Alan Rickman as an actor. He was so fabulous in Dogma too.

I'm rereading Order of the Phoenix now to be ready for the movie! And will reread HBP before the new book comes out.
I already have my tickets for the movie tomorrow... get to see it in IMAX 3D. Saw the last one that way too, wow is it a trip! They do such an amazing job with the 3D, and with all the wands waving in this one I can't wait!
Hey Paula,...Are we having "coffee talk" talking amongst ourselves???

I for one have been told soooo many times to read the books by friends, family, and some people on the forum. I have three books and haven't picked any of them up to read.

I've watched all movies obsessively though.....lol (have all on dvd)
I think the movies are brilliantly made, and it brings me back to childhood with mystical, magical themes and antics. Love the actors too....lol

No, there are eavesdroppers.
the thing about Snape is this.. if you remember.. Dumbledore told Harry that Harry couldnt help him unless he agreed to do exactly what Dumbledore told him to do no matter what it was or what happened. whatever Dumbledore said had to be followed to the letter..

Dumbledore trusted Snape completly and uses him as a mole into Voldemorts organization.. "never blow your cover" always what moles supposed to do isnt it.. so no matter what happened.. Snape was to never blow his cover nor dis-obey Dumbledore.. hated it when it was him that.. well you know.. but i feel as tho he was still following the orders given to him as laid down by dumbledore.. and tbh.. i want him to have the heros status..

seen as evil.. vilified yet really.. the good guy risking more than anyone in order to stop the evil..

its Alan Rickmans fault.. after seeing him as Snape i grew a soft spot for the Snape character.. that man is just fabu.. =)
Yea, Alan Rickman made snape cuddly haha. I'm so excited about the film and the book. Greg thinks Harry will die in the last book, I'm not so sure. We agree the final ending will be a bitter sweet one.

Here is something that will make you sick.. we're going to buy the book & take turns reading it to eachother, one chapter each :hearts: Awwww I'm so in love hahaha.

Awwwwwww!  That IS sweet, actually! :D
I don't think Harry will die. He better not!

I plan on picking up the book as soon as the bookstore opens and reading it all day Saturday with a short break to see the Wonder Pony TM and pick up a pizza. This sounds weird, but I'm kinda sorry I quit smoking. I always enjoyed smoking while reading. But I won't start again just for this.
Oh, I can't wait! I kind of like Snape...and feel sorry for him, too....That whole thing about Dumbledore, though, has me wondering.

I hope not! Your potential furry roomate in Detroit would not appreciate it...
Okay, now, people--when the new book comes out, please don't spoil it! I'm scared that I'll be coming to look at this thread to see the 'continued debate' and then someone will say I just finished the book and it turns out that Snape is...

So, none of that!
We'll have to start a spoiler thread so that people who haven't finished the book can be forewarned.

I ordered my book through OES/Amazon, so it will be delivered on Saturday. BUT - I'm going to Chicago for the weekend to see my friends and go to a Cubs game! I was lamenting the fact that I would be in Chicago and my book would be here, unread for the whole weekend. When my stepson Ian heard that, he volunteered to stay here and dogsit for Bailey - as long as I leave him pizza money and the mailbox key LOL! So, Ian gets to spend the weekend reading in peace, Bailey gets to stay home with his big brother, and I just have to avoid the spoilers until Monday 8)
I don't have the Internet at home so I cannot start a spoiler thread over the weekend. Can someone else do it? And we need to promise to post only in the spoiler thread. Although I will be too verklempt to post!

Sue, your stepson is a good man.

Pizza fingers on the book??????
I'm a little late, but work is slow today and I've got to kill three more days before the book is released, so here's my two cents.

DISCLAIMER: What you are about to read is a PURELY SPECULATIVE ranting from my idle thoughts, but it could be a spoiler that but may ruin the book for some, or give more fun ideas to discuss, so... you've been warned.

My idea about Severus Snape (My hero!, Vote for Snape!! )is that he has an agenda of his own. He's neither good nor bad, but whatever seems convenient at the time for himself. His loyalty to Dumbledore is true and he spies on the dead eaters because having information from both sides serves his purposes very well, but his final motivation is totally hidden from us, and I think will be until the end of the last book.

To me, he's acting on a personal revenge to close a pending business with Voldemort (Remember he felt deeply regretful after rattling on the prophecy and having Lily killed?). Being himself the best occlumens in the world, it's easy for him to work on both sides and allow him to get closer to Voldemort and strike the final blow. I revisited the books and movies searching for clues to what will happen, and I'm getting the idea that he may have had feelings from Lily. When the Potter family was killed, he realized that he made a mistake... He may have wanted to harm James/Harry, but Liliy was killed and gave her life for Harry. If he honors the life debt he had with James, then he's also repented that he could not protect him when he needed Snape to fulfill his debt.

That gives Snape a perfect reason for the Love/Hate relationship he has with Harry. If Snape had feelings for Lily, then he hates him because she died because of him, as he's the living image of his most hated classmate and husband of his love. On the other hand, Snape protects him, because he is the son of Lily and James, people he was supposed to protect, and according to the prophecy, he will be the instrument of Voldemort's destruction, so he must protect him at all costs to get his own revenge.

If Harry lives at the end, the Snape will cleanse his sins by performing the ultimate sacrifice and giving his life in order for Harry to vanquish Voldemort, and then letting Snape have the final word and destroy Voldemort by Harry's hands.

If Harry dies, it will because Harry's death was key in the destruction of Voldemort, and he will be the one destroying the dark lord and getting his revenge, making sure that Harry's death is not in vane.

So, to me, the question is not wether Snape is good or bad, but if he lives or not and if he will sacrifice himself and pay his life debt to James and Lily by protecting Harry in the end.

..... Sorry for the long rant.... What do you think??
Saul, I never thought that Snape has a life debt to James! But is he obliged, now that James is dead? And I definitely think Peter Pettigrew will have to fulfill his obligation to Harry and that will play an important part in the final book. I have heard many speculations that Snape was in love with Lily but I don't buy that.

Harry will live, but Snape will die a hero's death. (But I still want him to be bad).
Remember that James saved Snape for a certain death when Sirius sent him to the shack when Lupin was transformed into a werewolf? That made Sirius be in debt to James. Abot the feelings for Lily, I feel there's truth there, but I'm not sure if Lily even knew. Snape is very introvert and seems that he regards feelings as a weakness, so he probably will never reveal if he felt something to her.

I don't know what will Peter's role will be, but I believe he will be a traitor in the end. No matter what side Snape turns out to be, it's going to be an explosive final. I think in the end he will be on Dumbledore's side, but could be because he regrets his evil actions in the final moment I really don't think he's good, more that it's convenient for him to be on that side; After all, he's a true Slitherin, right?. But if he turns our to be truly evil, he will show us how powerful he really was... Managed to fool Dumbledore!!! Anyhow, it's going to be an explosive final, and he will die a hero, regardless of which side he is at.
