speak - a can of worms

Hi all,

Alfie is making good progress to becoming a dog, rather than a pest haha

he learned sit a while ago, and i have also taught him to lie down, which at times he is reluctant to do, as he gives a little bark before doing it, that says "not this crap again"...

he is also learning stay, but will only do it for short periods at a time, which i tolerate as its all part of the learning.

he seems to be getting slightly less bitey now thankfully, because he seems to understand "no biting"... ocassionally though, i must confess despite popular opinion, if he is nasty with the biting i have hit him on the front of the nose, which also seems to work just fine, and he is showing no signs of agression or fear of me... but it is only a very ocassional and last resort thing anyway...

i seem to have opened a can of worms now though because i started to teach him "speak"... he is still a little confused because when i tell him to sit, with a treat behind my back, he does, and then when i say "speak" he lies down...

i repeat the word a few times, and he barks at me, then i reward him with the treat...

since he finally got the hang of it, he hasnt stopped barking, until he got tired of being ignore and lay down to sleep...

any advice to avoid the confusion when training? he seems to be getting the hang of the commands, just a little confused with what is expected of him... is this normal, or am i moving too fast for him?

PS i have posted a new pic of alfie, taken just the other day, on my profile

 No, he doesn't have his commands confused, you do. Since you are the more intelligent one here, consider keeping his confused commands and you change. No, I couldn't do that either  Just work on one command at a time and then add the next. He'll get it worked out if you can remain straight.

Remember, it takes many months before they go from "brat" to very intelligent dog.......be patient.
Oh my gosh Alfie is soooooo cute!!!!

Try one command at a time, when he has got that one perfect, move on to the next.
