Chicagoland OES Rescue: Senior sheepie needs immediate help

Chicagoland OES rescue has a 9 year old in need of an immediate home or foster home. His owner is no longer able to care for him (placed in a nursing home and not expected to live) and the family is in need of immediate help. They are consumed with the imminent death of their father and the dog is being let out twice daily be a neighbor. Please call Grace at 847-446-7381 if you can help this gentle guy. Sally Carr

any update on this guy?
Heather, can you give Grace a call and find out more info? I haven't heard anything from out here about him.
im at work so i could only send an email, but hopefully Grace will see it soon. I offered to email all the foster homes my rescue uses, so hopefully we can be of some help if it is still needed.
Very cool!
Has this boy landed anywhere yet?

Charlie is a 9 year young, gentle guy whose owner is terminally ill.The family requested that COESC rescue find Charlie a home immediately as they are dealing with the emminent death of their father. He is in need of a forever home or even a foster home so he can have some breathing room and not be euthanized as the family absolutely cannot take him on. If you can open you heart to Charlie please give Grace a call at 847-446-7381.
Charlie is still looking for a new forever home. We have a club meeting-COESC (all are welcome)- tonight at 8 p.m. at Russells B-B Q Restaurant in Rolling Meadows (Schaumburg) and will be discussing Charlie----his "temporary" walkers are getting impatient as they cannot keep up the vigil on Charlie's ill owner and look after him too. Any help would be appreciated.
Sally
I do hope Charlie finds a home soon.

I'm bummed I can't attend the meeting tonight, Sally. I've had the meeting on my calendar for months as I've wanted to get involved and what better way than to help out with October's gathering. Wouldn't ya know, a friend of Steve's is driving through town and of course the night he's driving through town is...yep, tonight of all nights. I should be here when he and his son come as I haven't seen the friend in a long time and haven't met his now 5 year old son. I better go take a nap!

I hope to attend another meeting.
Is there an email list I can get on for COESC meetings/events?

Also- I left Grace an email with my phone number letting her know that I would gladly send out info to all my foster homes regarding these 2 and if they are social they are welcome to attend our adoption events.
Heather,

Here is the link to the website. I've been told that there isn't anyone to send out email or organize newsletters. So, I check this site.

I am confused. Is this dog with Chicago Rescue or still with the family?
Charlie is still with the "family" of the very ill owner. They absolutely cannot keep him and are just going over and walking him a few times a day (feeding too, of course). I'm sure the dog is very confused and we need to get him into a permanent situation ASAP. Sally
Is the family not willing to surrender him to Chicagoland Rescue or is rescue unable to take him in?

I just called Grace and she says she has emailed Heather (Lil Walty) 3 times and has not heard back and she wonders if there is a problem with your email account. She is anxious to hear from you. Can you call her? Did you send the message out to your foster homes?

They would love to get him into rescue but Grace says she hasn't made any headway. She's says she's been trying for 3 weeks to reach out to someone that can help but is just hitting deadends.

She has placed an ad in the newspaper to find a home for him starting tomorrow but the family is starting to consider euthanizing him if no one steps up.

I wish there was some way I could help. If transport could be arranged, I would be willing to provide foster care. . .
Charlie is still with the extended family as we have several others in rescue right now and to uproot him, at 9, and place him in a "kennel type" environment will not help the situation. The family is willing to surrender him but we are trying to find him a forever home without moving him twice. Sally
I had offered to help pay for boarding costs. A kennel type situation is certainly better than euthanasia, which I was told is being considered. . .

Hmm.. I wrote her back on Thursday with my cell number. I will try her again!
I talked to Grace this week about Charlie. We would have been willing to foster (for a temp time). But it seems, he gets stressed around dogs, and we have two.

I feel so badly for this guy. Let's all say a prayer for him.
Before I call Grace, can someone tell me about Charlie's health, he can walk on a leash and where he is located? I'm considering presenting him to my Mom as a foster; however, before I do that, I need more information. Mom is an experienced OES and Tibetan Terrier owner for over 30 years with a TON of love to hand out.
That would be great :D

It seems it would be best to call Grace directly...
she should have or be able to get the details you need.

I am not sure where he is located. Grace told me that the 70 owner (now ill/dying) had no problems walking him on a leash. I agree that calling Grace is the best thing to do. She can fill you in directly. That would be awesome if your mom could foster him. . .
I don't want to get anyone's hopes up. I just talked to my Mom and she has many valid concerns as I knew she would. She's probably ruminating about it at this very moment...especially since Charlie is in a suburb only about 10 minutes from her house. I'll keep you posted.
Stacy, bless your mom for considering it.

If Chicagoland rescue can't find a home for this guy, maybe someone should reach out to New England Old English Sheepdog Rescue to see if they have any available foster or permanent homes in the area.

Sally -- has Grace been in touch with NEOESR? Has she contacted any other rescue groups?
From what Grace and Jeri said, he's a nice guy.

I sure hope he finds a home.

No one said anything about any physical problems, or behavioral problems.

I think he's a quiet dog, that's lead a quiet life.

Stacy...I hope you Mom will consider him'
Hi All. Unfortunately, Mom declined; she just can't handle an older dog right now after needing to put hers down last year. She gets attached too quickly and is prone to depression. I told her not to feel guilty that it just isn't the right time. I'm sorry :(

I did speak with Grace. Charlie is only about 70 pounds so he is a nice size. He is located in Morton Grove, IL. It is believed that he walks well on a leash and leads a fairly quiet life. He would be a good dog for someone without kids or other pets. It isn't thought that he doesn't like them, he just isn't used to living with them.

I have a friend who does a lot of work for Save a Pet in the area. I will contact her and ask if she knows of any foster homes.

My heart just breaks for him :(
I was just wondering if there had been any Charlie placement updates. I hope the removed Craig's list posting is a good thing.
Charlie still has not been placed. Craig's list removes the ad after a week. We had one reply from that and the caller was supposed to go and look at Charlie but never followed through.
He may be coming into our rescue as the nephew (lives next door to Charlie) has given us an ultimatum. Sally
Thank you for the update, Sally. Breaks my heart that the family won't keep him :( .
You should try posting an ad with his picture and a bit more information- and you can post a new one every day! I have had so much luck with Craigslist I really recommend trying again with it. If you guys want I'd be happy to post another ad for you, just send over his picture.
I've heard Jeri is taking Charlie on a (very) temporary basis.

Thank goodness!!!!!
Charlie is with Jeri Hoppe---hopefully not for long as he needs a permanent home. She just got him yesterday afternoon and is evaluating him now. He does get along with other dogs but an adult home would probably be best as that is what he has always been in. He can do stairs and walks on a leash. He is eating well and accepted a crate. Please contact Grace at 847-446-7381 if you can find a home for him. Sally
There's pictures of Charlie on Petfinder.
He looks like a good sheepie-boy. :D

All About Charlie
Charlie belongs to an older man who has had to enter a nursing home. Charlie now needs a new home, so both he and his owner can be happy. He is well behaved, healthy and would love a furever home. At only 9 years young, he has a long and happy life to look forward to... Can you help?

Oh boy, he sure is a cutie pie! I do hope someone sees him and can give him a home. I feel much better knowing that Jeri had some room at the "inn" :D
Charlie hopefully has found a permanent home. He went with a gal named Mary, locally, yesterday and "no news is good news" so we hope he is fitting into her life. She had recently lost an OES to auto-immune disease.

Yay for Charlie and Mary! :clappurple:

Oh this is so wonderful! I hope they live happily ever after!
Oh my...I'm so happy. I really feel like crying with joy.

Bless Charlie and Mary...and bless Charlie's dad...I wonder how he is.

Go Mary, go Mary, go Mary :go:
Yeah for Charlie and Mary! I hope they can join us at SheepieFest!4 in October. (Deborah, can you believe it will be the 4th get-together????)

Not to hijack the thread...but are we going to have a planning meeting for SheepieFest 4?
What wonderful news!!! :yay:

I can only hope Deborah agrees to spearhead this again. She does have a dynamite committee though! I've already bought a few little items if we decide to have another auction.
I will start a new thread under Sheepdog clubs this afternoon, since we have lost our spot at the Forest Preserve this year...we have big discussing to do

(And...I have been negligent, since I've been spending time with my daughter who just returned from a month in Israel. I know, I know, I better get on the stick!)

More to follow...
We have a OES as a family member and I read posts on the Sheepie Lovers forum. I want to say you rescuers do wonderful work - this network is amazing. It is awesome how you get the word out when a Sheepie/dog is in trouble and somehow things turn out OK with a lot of effort. I was so happy for Charlie (whose master was very ill) and Mary. I now see Charlie's picture is on Petfinders again. He has to be the same Charlie or do they not update the Petfinders site? Sad if things didn't work out for Charlie..
