Cocoa Shell Mulch

I'm pasting a post from a friend from another board that I thought was important. I searched but didn't see that this has been discussed here:

I've never heard of this product until recently. Unfortunately it killed my best friend's 3 year old chocolate lab on Saturday. Please be aware of this product and keep it away from your pets.

It is called Cocoa Shell Mulch, www.nationalcocoashell.com

The mulch which smells like cocoa is used in regular flower beds, gardens, etc. It is especially used for rose gardens. HOWEVER, the product is not labeled that it is TOXIC to pets - especially dogs who of course as we all know, can't have chocolate.

My girlfriend had just bought a new house, where the previous homeowner had apparently used this mulch in her beds. Shortly after moving in my friend noticed her dog was losing hair, seemed lethargic and had mysetrious bumps pop up on his mouth and ears. They took him to the vet several times and the vet finally did a byopsy on the cyst like bumps. However, before they could even get the results their dog, Moose, suddenly died on them while playing at the lake on Saturday. My friend found him floating in the water.

They demanded an autopsy to find out what suddenly killed thier baby and the autopsy revealed this cocoa mulch in his system; which inevitably shut down his system and killed him.

What is so infuriating is that this product is not labeled to keep it away from pets nor does their website mention anything about it not being safe for pets. Now, I KNOW it's not intended for consumption, but neither is bleach and many other toxic chemicals and they are labeled: do not consume.

Anyway - I wanted to get the word out about this toxic mulch b/c I'm sure many people who use it do not think about the danger it poses to their family pet.

Although I don't use the product, I have contacted the company to ask them to label thier bags. Hopefully this can somehow be prevented from happening again.

I also found an article on the ASPCA website that gave more information:

I had never heard of this danger before, so I thought I'd pass it along for others. Hopefully nobody else has to go through this!

There's been a couple posts on this before:

Seems to be the same sad story every time.
Guess I used the wrong key words to search. Good to know people are informed....now I am too!
The funny thing is, I had no idea that kind of mulch even existed until someone posted it in a dog forum. Except for cedar, the smell of mulch makes me ill so I stay away from it.

Thanks for posting this today though because it made me remember that I had to work on my landscaping!
I used to use it, and thankfully my dogs don't eat stuff like that. It really does smell good - like a piece of chocolate. And if I can smell it, dogs have to really be able to!

I now use regular mulch - no dyes, or anything.
