Crate size?

I've read the other posts but there is not much about the actual size to get. I'm thinking we might need to keep a puppy in crate to prevent chewing while we are out, and also would be good for in the car, but what about when he gets older? Surely the crate will be out of use by then? If he has a bed at home and can be harnessed in the car when he's older is there really a need for a massive crate? What size do you guys have?

Thanks
Cassie & Greg

Violet is 4 yrs old and China is 3 yrs old and has not been in a crate for a long time. Once they get past the stages where they can get hurt by eating and distroying the house, they can be left out of the crate. It depends on the dog and the owner.

Good luck with your sheepie
The wire crate I have is my newest one. It is the Life Stages 1636. I am sure you have different brands in UK. The link to this one is: http://www.midwesthomesforpets.com/Prod ... S-1600.asp

The dimensions of mine are: in inches -36L x 24W x 27H or in CM - 91L x 61W x 69H.
This is about the smallest I would go for an adult OES. The nice thing was that this one comes with a divider you can put anywhere in the crate. You can move it as the puppy grows!

It might just depend on your dog. Obviously he will be full grown size wise before he is actually mature. I have a 15 month old who is crated at night because she can't be trusted not to get into things. She still likes to chew. Mine is a rescue that we've only had a short time so it might be different if you've had the dog since he was a puppy but you just never know.

Like "got sheep", I also have the Life Stages wire crate. Though mine is Model 1648 and is 48 L x 30 W x 33 H". I didn't want Lucy to have to duck her head when she sat in her crate. With this size she can sit normally (her head doesn't touch the top but the fur sticks through...she probably has an inch space at the top).
Yes, Chewie has to duck. We got it as a portable crate for shows, so he doesn't use it daily. He uses his bigger plastic crate at home.

Maggie the coonhound uses it at home, and she is a much smaller dog.
LeAnne has the same one as you for Clay, and it is very roomy.
I gor George the 49inch crate which is the biggest indoor one you can buy. He is a bit too big for it now but he doesn't use it anymore so it doesn't matter. We just used it to get him through a norty stage he was having, I think it helped us all stay sane!!
Haha, thanks for the replies.
Will have a think about it. The local pet shop hires them out for £6.00 a week, but says most people decide they then want to keep it anyway.

Cassie.
I no longer use the crate for my dogs but have found it to be extremely useful to have around. I've lent it to people and used it in a couple of rescue and fosters that I or friends have done. I feel like we've gotten our money's worth for sure. Frankly, I love when someone needs it because it gets it out of my house!
