Defender of their realms or not?

I was having a huge laugh with some tradesman next door, working on the neighbours roof.

Put both the girls outside to potty and hear all this barking. It was twilight and poor old Kelseys eyes are not the best in this type of light. Went back outside to see what all the fuss was about!!

Well here the two are, standing side by side, Kelsey in the opposite direction barking her head off and brie facing the neighbours roof looking at the tradesman up there wiggling her butt at top speed.

Kelsey knew someone was around but could not work out where 8O So she just barked as she usually does with this dumb look on her face as a warning to any intruder. Brie, well no hope there as a watch dog or protector of the realm, her butt did not stop wiggling at the tradie. Talk about"Dumb and Dumber"

The tradesman nearly fell off the roof laughing at my two. :?

So my question is, would your sheepie be a protector of their realm or just lick to death an intruder?

My sister and I were laughing about that the other day. Hannah would definitly lick them to death and then show them where the cookie box is.
A couple of years after we married, my husband was work on oil rigs when we didn't have enough crews. This meant he would be gone for days and return at wierd hours.
When he was gone, Maude notched up her protection mode. She would bark at any unusual noise - that beautiful deep bark. When he would come home in the middle of the night, she would bark enough to wake the dead. No way he could come into the bedroom until she realized it was him - and I said it was okay.

Ben, Bailey and Riley bark like crazy at anyone outside - and lick them to death when they get inside, even strangers. 8O
Very cute story.

Chumley would definitely love to snuggle with any intruder. She is completely oblivious to any sense of stranger danger and just loves to be loved by anyone and everyone.

Maggie puts on a good show. She is always on alert for suspicious sounds and has a whole set of responses from low growl to loud barking. When someone comes to the door, she will run and launch herself like spiderman onto the door with her face centered in the glass pane and her legs splayed out to the sides, barking like crazy. It is pretty funny to see this from the outside and probably a bit scary for any strangers.

Despite this brave effort, when someone comes into the house, Maggie's barking is more fearful and she tends to bark and back away and will sometimes submissive pee. When she sees the person being greeted by me and by Chumley, she relaxes and wants in on the fun. But if I wasn't home, I think she would be terrified. In fact, the first time our current dog walker came to get her, Maggie was not in her crate and the dog walker said Maggie barked like crazy until she opened the door and then she ran and hid under a table in the corner of the room. Poor brave scared Maggie.
About the only damage to an intruder is he is knocked off of his feet by sheepies trying to get his attention in our house. Oh of course there is the ear cleaning that London will proceed to do, the neck cleaning that Zack will do, and the dermabrasion technique that Sam uses on their face. I guess if someone was allergic to dog slobber then they might be in trouble but otherwise - good grief!
One time, several years ago, the city was working on a water line in front of our house. All these big trucks and big men were working outside the house and Winston would bark at them in his big deep voice, so for the first time I thought, HUH, he actually might care about telling me about strangers....good boy! Well late that night, the crew accidentally cut the natural gas line to our house. Now it was very late and we were upstairs asleep, but the gas crew had to get to our meter in the basement, so they had to knock on the door and wake us up. Winston came along behind me down the stairs toward this man barking his terrible, fierce sounding bark, and the man thought he was going to be eaten alive. Right when he had his hand up and was trying to back away, Winston ran right up to him and wiggled and licked and wiggled and licked.

The man had to take a minute to catch his breath before he could go check the meter. He was scared to death. Later he told us he thought Cujo was coming at him.

So no. I have NO faith that Winston would protect us from anybody! He might make them run, but then he'd just try to catch up and help them realize their need to pet him. And, if they just come in and don't knock first, well then apparently he figures they're supposed to be in, so all's good just scratch me, thankyouverymuch.
Dutch barks but soon settles for a good pat or rub. My OES Dudley would let anyone into the house without a murmur but just try to leave and he would bark his head off nonstop :D
All my dogs will bark if someone comes to the door, some more enthusiastically than others

Out in the yard, only Tucker and Bree do not bark at neighbors etc...
Dancer will bark at the neighbors, then run and play, then run back and give them a stern bark just in case they forgot
Sky gives a few loud barks and then runs off to play... Tucker will give one VERY loud ferocious sounding bark if someone comes to the door, and then wiggle his butt
Panda barks inside or out for seemingly no reason at all, almost like she just thinks she should LOL

I think that if someone broke in, Dancer, Sky and Tucker might give them a scare at first, Panda would wiggle, kiss, and help them carry stuff out, and Bree would bounce up and down all over the furniture to prevent them from taking her couch.
Since we live in the middle of nowhere now the doorbell rarely rings ( yeah I love it....no sales people) but when we have people over the dogs are in the yard and we bring them in one at a time.
The other day we brought friends into the yard to see the dogs. Merlin barks like he is going to bite someone. But as soon as I open the gate....he is all friendly. It is very odd, he will bark fiercely when there is a fence between him and someone who is not family but as soon as the gate or door is open, he's like...oh they opened the gate, they must be ok. (yeah he's not that smart ok!)

Avalon barks and then tries to nip people into playing with her. Faith barks at anything and everything...its the terrier in her. Scarlet barks at us coming in the yard...its an excited "OH MY PEOPLE ARE HERE, THEY ARE MINE MINE MINE" bark.

All four bark and howl when hubby leaves in the morning and again when he returns at night...... thank goodness I have no near neighbors.
When the doorbell rings, Mulligan barks and runs to the door, then when we get to the door he goes into his crate on his own -- most of the time. Sometime we have to remind him.

Very much like here. All loud barks, running around, etc until we unlock and open the gate. Then the noise level drops, but several times I've been concerned about MO going up to the car door of visitors with a very determined look and bark. She has kept servicemen pinned in their truck. However, repeat servicemen know her and start talking to her which stops the barking. Still the dogs must sniff everyone and their vehicle and pee on their tires  . If the upright makes a sudden move, the barking resumes. Friends who know the dog start calling the dogs by name before getting to the gate so their greeting is less and once inside the gate, a giant love fest ensues.

DH travels with his job and I always like to have loud and big dogs around. However I don't know if they'd protect me if necessary. I always figured the Pyrs would, but these sheepies, I don't know.
We have a beware of dog sign on the door. I don't advertise that you have to beware of dogs loving you to death.
I'm pretty sure no one would make it in with our guys keeping guard. Bear especially keeps our territory free to undesirables. If for some reason someone came in under some other pretense, I'm pretty sure that they wouldn't make it out alive if they tried to touch me. However, this time, it would be Clyde. I think he'd kill someone who tried to hurt me.
Chewie is growing up, and his protective side is definitely showing. LeAnne and I walk at night near her house - many times after dark. It is a very safe neighborhood and tons of people are out walking late - especially since it has been so hot out.

Chewie has done the low growl to men approaching us. He also growled and barked at my friend's husband one day. Jim runs marathons and was out running. They live 2 blocks from LeAnne. We were walking as Jim came back. He tried to pet Chewie, but he would have no part of it. Then we realized he had no shirt on, was all shiny with sweat and had a sweatband on. He looked very different from normal. Last night we walked by as they were unloading their car, and all was fine!

All of ours are protective of our home. Lucy the foster baby basset is not - she just wiggles and wants to be petted.

That is soooo funny! Poor Kelsey!

I am not sure what Harry would do. He does not bark when the doorbell rings, just runs to the door to see who it is. I think he would bark cautiously and then pee in fear that he might actually have to do something.

A friend opened our unlocked front door once thinking we were home and told us that Mopsy, who knew him and he was calling by name, growled at him and he said she was pretty scary. He just closed the door and left. When he told me about it I was pretty impressed! Surprised but impressed!
well, i can tell you this from experience

panda will bark then run and hide...or if the policemen are in the yard, she will attempt to play ball with them....guns or no guns.....
Walter sits by the door watching all day long. He barks/goes nuts any time a car, person, rabbit, butterfly go by... he's a great guard dog! We used to discourage it, but I really think he thinks it's his job and he definitely loves it so now I let my little guard dog protect the house.
