July 4th deserts

Hi all,

I'm trying to think of something fun to serve for desert for our traditional 4th of July barbeque.

We're having hamburgers, corn on the cob, watermelon, potato salad, and cherry jello. (That's an awful lot for 3.5 people!!!). Doesn't get much more american then that, right???? I'm not sure what fun thing to have for desert though. I don't want to make anything too difficult, or anything that'll heat up the kitchen too bad.

Any ideas???

what about vanilla pudding mixed with some cool whip...layer that with blueberries and strawberries in tall clear glasses......easy , yummy and pretty
Ooohhh!!! that does sound good. It'd have to be raspberries, since I'm allergic to strawberries, but that sounds fabulous!!!
Or you could do a fruit flan... flan cake, then ice cream or whip cream, then make the flag out of blueberries and strawberries...
ps....hehe....kar, remember the desert is dry so only one ''s'', dessert is so good you want 2....''s''
Most of the magazines and on line cooking sites show the flag cake. A white sheet cake decorated like a flag. First cover with Cool Whip or the real stuff, then blueberries for stars and red fruit for red stripes. It's usually strawberries, but I know your allergies.....and then leave the white for the white strip. Easy and eye popping.

I do like Darcy's recipe too.

Now for me I'd do pound cake squares, alternated with blueberries and raspberries or strawberries and all soaked in Grand Marnier, topped with whipped cream. If I was dieting I'd use anglefood cake
flbpt!!!! :P Just 'cause I was an english major doesn't mean I can SPELL!!!!

Stace- isn't flan a type of mexican pudding? I don't think I've heard of a flan cake before! sounds tummy though.. do you have a recipe?
This is curious, kind of a cross between Tres Leches and ??

Flan cake is a creature from the same family as the pudding cakes in which you pour sugar and boiling water over the cake batter and end up with a caky top layer and pudding on the bottom, but further evolved. To make flan cake, you pour caramel in the bottom of a Bundt pan, add cake batter, and top it with an egg-and-milk mixture. After baking, you unmold it, and voilà! Cake with flan on top. Some recipes are for chocolate cake, but Chowhound testers agree that it’s better with vanilla. All the recipes in circulation call for cake mix, but if you’re enterprising, you may be able to finesse a scratch-made version.

Here’s the basic recipe:

1/2 cup prepared caramel sauce
1 box cake mix, plus ingredients to prepare it according to package instructions
1 (12-ounce) can evaporated milk
1 can sweetened condensed milk
4 eggs

Preheat oven to 350°F. Spray Bundt pan with nonstick spray, and pour caramel sauce in the bottom. Prepare cake mix according to instructions, and pour batter into pan. Place evaporated and condensed milks and eggs in a blender and blend to combine, then pour this mixture gently over the cake batter in the pan (the flan mixture will settle to the bottom of the pan). Place the cake pan in a deep roasting pan and bake in a water bath, with water coming 2 inches up the sides of the cake pan, for 1 hour to 1 hour 15 minutes, until cake portion tests done. Remove from water and cool on a rack for 15 minutes, then invert onto a platter. Refrigerate until you plan to serve.

For the fourth, I usually make this banana pudding dish with Nilla wafers which always gets rave reviews. It's kind of like Darcy's recipe but you can use just one bowl :D

Use French vanilla or banana pudding
Nilla wafers
Bananas (sliced)
Cool Whip

Alternate the layers and then put Cool Whip on the top..yummy yummy! Everyone likes it because it's something light after they eat a bunch of junk!

This year I am making pasta salad instead so I'm sure I"ll get complaints.
Isn't apple pie pretty American?
I just buy pre made flans, less complicated the better! I find on their own they are rather dry, not too sweet, but make a great base for a lot of desserts.
It's strawbery rhubarb pie at my house tomorrow. But I guess THAT'S out if you are allergic to strawberries :(
sounds like English Trifle :D

Yep, no pies... pies mean heating up that oven, which I avoid like the plague in the summer... besides which I make my own pie crusts, groan. I do have free rhubarb in the back yard, but I've never tried it  the previous owner planted it. I'm loving the fruit/pudding idea! Can't get much easier then instant pudding and fruit layers covered by whip cream. Plus I have really pretty crystal desert cups screaming to be used in the china cabinet!

What all are you guys serving on the 4th for food?
I make a huge batch of my special sun tea. I still need to pick some sort of food to make. I think it will be BBQ's.

Otherwise, our party is BYOB and a dish to pass. That way, you get an amazing variety of food and drink!
mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm rhubarb sauce over VANILLA ICE CREAM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You MUST try it!!!!!!!
I'm making a banana pudding, too. It's a little different from the traditional one, though. I use instant french vanilla pudding, cool whip, sweetened condensed milk and cream cheese & pepridge farms chessman cookies instead of the traditional nilla wafers -and bananas, of course. It's incredibly yummy and equally incredibly fattening. Thus, it is a rare treat. :D It's really, very light, though, and cool after the hot, grilled stuff you're eating. 8)
