Barney decided to start BARKING

Background:

Barney is not much of a barker. He'll bark every once in a while, but not all that often. He usually doesn't even bark at the other dogs in the neighborhood and usually when he barks it's just a one or two bark thing.

We just moved earlier this week to a new apartment, temporary until our new home is finished. Our first night there was Tuesday. Last night Barney was barking a little--not much, but it was getting late so we tried to get him to stop and he did. This morning I let him downstairs in the kitchen to eat his breakfast as I went back up to shower (like I usually do--leave him to eat, shower, come back to get him).

This morning he was barking and barking. Then, I left to go to work, but forgot something and came back--and I heard him barking through the door. I came upstairs and he barked some more. Last night it wasn't noisy out as far as I could tell--but this morning there were some gardners out and about...What should I do?

Maybe ignore it for a bit and just see if he settles down once he gets used to the sounds. When I have moved, Maggie is initially very barky but then she gets used to what are normal sounds and what are new and different. She is still freaked out by the sound of the washer in the basement. . .
I just get worried about the noise since we're in an apartment setting, with people on either side of us...I'm assuming he'll quiet down...we have nowhere else to go! 8O
this really isnt going to help....but panda says for bareny to spend a few weeks at her house.....they can bark their silly little heads off....and the only one to answer will be the crazy beagle behind us!!!!

Oh! In that case, maybe try a citronella collar. You might hear objections to it but it works like a charm for Maggie when I really need her to be quiet. Also putting her in her crate tends to settle her down and reduce her impression that she needs to be on guard.
The citronella collar sounds like a good idea. I'm hoping that he'll just get used to it and we'll be gone in about 4 weeks anyways, so it's just a temporary thing...

And Barney says thanks for the offer Panda! Barney's mom says When Can I Send Him!!! Just kidding. Although it's funny--he looks a LOT bigger now that we are in a small apartment!
we found when we moved and my husbands Irish setter - who had been raised basically in the woods, would bark we used "no!"
It worked much better than quiet or anything else. He learned that barking was not acceptable and only does it occassionally now (when we are home don't really know about when we are out)/

When we're home and he barks we'll say 'no' and he'll be quiet (and when we're home he doesn't really bark anyway)...it's exactly the fact that we'll be out and he'll bark that's the problem!
