Helping Henley

I am trying to do some research for my friend. Her 5yr old OES is very sick. He has been vomitting for about 1 month and lost about 20 pounds. The vet in the last week or so has run many tests but still no diagnosis. He says Henley's esophagus is not working right. The musculature is not pushing the food and water all the way to the stomach. Some he is actually aspirating into his lungs, has pneumonia because of it. He has to be fed in an upright position and then stood on his hind legs for 5 minutes after meals to help gravity pull the food down. The only test still out, is one for Myasthenia Gravis. It is very difficult for my friend to give Henley the kind of care he needs since he is one of three dogs and 5 kids. Has anyone heard of anything similar to Henley's condition. If she feels that she can no longer care for Henley, are there people out there willing to take on dogs with special needs?
Thanks for your help.

I'm so sorry to hear about Henley. Here's a link that might help:

http://www.marvistavet.com/html/body_megaesophagus.html

and if you do a search on Google you might find more.

If you tell us where your friend lives, maybe we can find an OES rescue organization in the area that can help out if your friend has to make that hard decision to give Henley up because they can no longer care for him.

Hope this helps a bit,

Suzanne
I have spoken to my friend about finding a home that can care for Henley. She is heartbroken about his illness, but feels her plate is too full to be able to devote the time Henley deserves. She would be interested in seeing if anyone was able to take in this wonderful dog. We live in Las Vegas, NV. Would be willing to drive almost anywhere to find Henley a good home.
Thank you
Pat
Here are a couple of links to get you started:

This one doesn't have a rescue for Nevada but mabye the CA one will do?

These are Las Vegas contacts:
http://www.shelterdog.org/nevada.htm

There's only one that takes OES: Patti & Dean Pickerd. There's a link to a web page but it doesn't work.

I'm also on a mailing list for OES and I will ask them if they know of any organizations in your area. I'll post them here or if you give me your e-mail address via the Private Message (PM) service here, I can send you the information that way. Whatever's more convenient for you.

Suzanne
I've just sent an e-mail to the OES mailing list and I'll post here as soon as I get something!

I feel so bad for your friend -- I can only imagine how difficult it would be to be in that position.

Suzanne
If your friend would like the support of other OES owners, she can join this mailing list that I'm a member of:

http://apple.ease.lsoft.com/scripts/wa-pluto.exe?SUBED1=oes-l&A=1

They are a great group of people, and will welcome a newcomer with open arms!

Here's another link:

The third contact states "California (Southern) & Nevada."
