Drake meets the Police!

This morning a trash truck drove by and pulled down my neighbors cable and phone line. The police came as I was taking the Drake out to go to the bathroom. Drake was such a good boy and sat without command while the police office came up to greet and pet Drake. Welllllllllllll, Drake could not contain himself and gave a great big submissive pee. I mean not a little wiggle butt spray that he is pretty much over but a big squirt almost hitting the officers shoes. I am not sure if it was the uniform or if it was because DRake needed to go to the bathroom but it was pretty imbarressing. The officer was so nice and just laughed. Drake was such a good boy he sat the few seconds the police officer pet him and did not try to jump at all. We have taught Drake to sit if he wants to be petted by someone new and if it is a little one he will lay all the way down without being told. We do have a issue with Drake when we come in the house and he likes to jump on us. Funny, just like my kids, they like to act up at home but behave really well when they are away at school or a friends. I sometimes have to ask their teachers if they are talking about my kids because they sure act different at school. Looks like Drake may be the same way 8)

Does anybody know if the peeing on the shoes thing is common for dogs? My neighbor had a boxer mix that was always happy to see me, but ALWAYS peed on my shoes!
Oh, yes and congratulations on your well-behaved pup! Cooper is also a jumper, and I wonder if it has anything to do with the fact that his former owmer was a lot taller than me, and maybe didn't mind it as much. We're working on it...
How did you train him to sit when meeting new people? That is going to be an important step with a new big to be doggie!
jsmarcus I started when we brought Drake home at 8 weeks and it has been a work in progress. I first taught Drake the basic of sitting and laying down, which for Drake came very easy. Drake also took to the leash very well. Then when baseball season arrived I took Drake to most of the practices and games to be well socalized around people. Needless to say OES attract alot of attention and kids and people would always come up to pet Drake. This comes to how I taught Drake to sit for stangers. Before I would let them pet Drake I would make him sit then I would hold Drake pretty much like you are in your picture except off to the side. I would then instruct the person to come to the side and pet Drake on the back. With little kids Drake I found that if I could control Drake better if I had Drake lay down on his side and I would hold and pet his head while the child would pet his belly. We worked on this all summer and now it comes pretty natural to Drake. What I have not mastered is keeping Drake from getting really excited when he sees people he knows really well because he just wants to love them to death. One more tip on practicing sits, when Drake and I go on walks I make Drake sit at every street corner we cross. This does two things, first it is a great way to practice the sit comand and it helps to teach the puppy not to dart across the street. I know other people probably have other methods but this is how I taught Drake. The next test is soccor and football season where there are much larger crowds. I will let you know how it goes 8)

One more thing and I know some people are against it but I use a pinch collar on Drake when really need to be in control of Drake, like on our walks or at the ballpark. After dislocating my finger over the 4th of July because Drake suddenly took off after the kids I realized that I needed to have a little more control over Drake then I already had because he is getting so big and strong. Drake does really well with the pinch collar and rarely pulls with it on. I found with just a collar Drake would pull a little more and end up choking himself with the collar. Drake never does this with the pinch collar. The older Drake gets and the more he is trained the less and less I have to use it.
