If I won the lottery....(what would YOU do?)

Since we all get at least 10 e-mails day informing us we've won lotteries in France, England and various countries in Africa, let's hear what you're going to do with your millions.

I would buy land in Kentucky (I'm talking at least 100 acres) and build a house and horse barns. Then I would open a retirement home for older, unwanted horses. The house would be big enough for me and whatever friends want to live in Kentucky and spend our days on the porch looking at the horses. And of course I would have lots o' dogs!

I would also give a lot to the various charities that are close to my heart.

I'd feel obligated to give my parents and the in-laws at least a million dollars. Then a another nice portion to our church.
Invest.
Buy another sheepie, minivans, a huge RV, new house in Colorado, and then travel the world with my hubby.
Um, you'd buy a MINIVAN with your lottery winnings! 8O
Yep......... how else would we fit our crew in? I would have a third kid, so that makes 3 carseats (since i believe kids should stay in a carseat longer than most instead of a booster seat) ...carseats take up SO much room!!
I definitely wouldn't want to live too abnormal of a life. I'd like to spend our money on our children, grandchildren, our relatives, and traveling!
Great question! Hmmmm, let's see . . . what would I spend the money on . . .

I'd definitely retire on the spot. And I'd laugh at the meager monthly pension check I'd get for retiring early! It would be just pocket change . . .

Then I'd buy a big parcel of land (maybe about 5 acres) and build a ginormous ranch-style home with huge rooms. (We're going through a rough time right now with my in-laws because of their advancing age and ills, living in a 3 story home, with the laundry in the basement and the bedrooms on the 2nd floor.)

Then I'd pay off my son's student loan, and pay for my daughter's upcoming grad school. Plus I'd give each of them a sizeable amount.

Then I'd buy a few vacation homes in my favorite spots.

Then my husband would take flying lessons and we'd get a small plane of our own (a dream he's had since childhood).

Then we'd buy a small yacht. Maybe more than one, depending on where we'd buy our vacation homes. Dale grew up on boats and absolutely loves them and wants one SO badly. Another dream since childhood . . .

Then I'd pay to have all the building maintenance work done on our church, so we wouldn't have to worry about how to do the work and where the money would come from.

And then I'd just sit back and enjoy life!!
So far this month on my email I have won/been left or been given investments totalling 265million pounds!!! (i think that is just over 530 million dollars!!)

Once the cheques come through I will buy whatever anyone wants

Ahh if only.....
pay off my student loans
After building a new home with handicap needs in mind now and setting my DH and I up for future senior needs........retirement home, assisted living, etc, I'd give a large donation towards building a church. Our community is in need of a larger church. It would have to be a hefty lottery winning, though. Anything left over would go to my brother's children who are not attorneys!

I dunno about that... but I suppose ya gotta dream big, kid.

I would renovate my house to the plans that we once had. We'd travel the country or the world while renos happen. I might rent a driver for our motorhome which just might have been replaced by a luxury model.

Instead of buying "vacation homes" I might buy "vacation properties"... places that required no maintenance; like luxury condos inside of hotels.

Now this is just the beginning; I can REALLY dream big. Just how much is this lottery win?

I figure we each get a million per e-mail. I had 15 today, so today's take is $15 million.
FIRST I'd build a bunk room at the Firehouse complete with shower and comfy bed so I don't have to sleep on an air mattress in the middle of the community room and bathe in a 12 inch sink.

THEN I'd build a house with an indoor swimming pool and hot tub, right where I am now (even if I had to tear my current house down to do it).

I just MIGHT quite my job so I could stay home knit, cover the ambulance and spend time with the pups. But I don't know for sure about that.

Ginny, I read it wrong the first time--I thought you said you'd stay home to knit a cover FOR the ambulance...I was getting ready to worry about you... 8)
An Ambulance Cozy!
Well, I'm ALMOST knitting an AMBULANCE COZY. I just purchased 40 skeins of NEON YELLOW YARN to knit winter caps for the ambulance crew (to match our ambulance jackets which are safety yellow)
im a weird one.. depends on how much i won really.. say i won a million.. would pay off bills.. sell the stuff we didnt need and move back to England.. buy Alan a pub and live life again..

if i won several million.. then i would give random checks to people.. set aside like 2 mil in a bank account and every so often write a stranger a nice check..

I hope I accidentally run into you on the street! :D
With only $15MM (about $8MM after taxes) I'd have to be really careful.

If I spent $4MM right away, I'd only generate about $130,000 in after-tax interest income with the remaining $4MM principal.

So my $2MM motorhome looks questionable at best. The driver is gone, and multiple vacation luxury condos is out. I can renovate my home and live very nicely in it of course.

I thought we were talking about a REAL lottery win, you know -- a $300 million dollar mega millions win, or something. :D

So with $8MM I spend a million bucks on paying off my mortgage and renovating the house, or buying a new luxury home and furnishing it. We set up a charitable foundation for another 1.5 million (It only costs us $1MM to do that after taxes). So now we've got $6MM left or about $180,000 in yearly after tax income. Now we can travel nicely, maybe even have a modest second or third home and/or apartment somewhere.

The charitable foundation will give me something to work on when I'm bored. :D
WOOHOO, I WON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :yay:

I can't believe some of you only "might" quit their job. Heck, that's a done deal! I'd go to work for one more day after winning and burn all my bridges. It's not even that I hate my job, but if I had the money, I'd NEVER get up early again!
I'm just afraid if I quit my job I'd do nothing but sit home and get fat (ter)
If I won the lottery I would first pay off any bills that I owe including my mortgage. I would buy me a house at the beach. Invest most of it, give to our church and some charities for children. I would buy a lot of property to start my own dog rescue. Lastly, I would hunt down my 1958 Corvette and buy it!!! :)

I'm with you Butters. Definitely quit the job, and have the hubby quit his. I'd be tempted to buy a new house closer in to town, but not any more extravagant than what I have now. Put money aside into an educational trust to cover college tuition for stepsons, nephews/niece and godson. Then maintain as much of the principal as possible, live on the income, and travel! I don't need to travel first class, but I'd love to have the freedom to go where I want when I want!

I'm right with you in quitting. I'd be out of there soooooo fast. I love to travel so I might buy a smallish RV and travel. My dream is living in CO so I would definately buy out there. My Dh's kids would get a set amount otherwise they would keep coming with their hands out. A few charities...my list is endless. I'm sure I'd end up with nothing and end up begging on a street corner, LOL

Be sure some of those charities help the people who have nothing and are begging on a street corner. ;)
If I won I would share with family and friends, and leave a large donation to Sick Kids in Toronto , don't have to quit my job I'm retired :D
