Scary Chummie incident

I took my two to the nearby playground where dogs play offleash (it is not officially a dogpark and not technically allowed). There were two dogs there playing fetch. I hadn't met them before so I asked the owner if it would be ok for mine to play. He said "Sure!"with a big smile and a welcoming hand gesture.

This all happened really fast -- like 10 seconds -- I let Maggie off first and then Chumley, who was pulling and eager to greet. Well, the big dog lunged and chased away Maggie as Chummie was trotting over with a big smile on her face. Maggie was acting odd and backing away from me and then the dog grabbed Chumley by the neck flipped her to the ground and looked like he was going to rip her apart. All the time, Chum was squealing with fear. The guy grabbed his dog and separated them, then put him on the ground and held him down while I rushed my dogs out. When we were far enough away, he gave me his cellphone in case either of them was injured.

Chum was walking in a weird hunched way at first but she was able to trot quickly home where I checked her over and felt lots of saliva on her but no punctures. I gave her some metacam because I am sure being flipped to the ground would be painful and she has always tolerated metacam really well.

I was so rattled and scared and the scene keeps playing over and over in my head. I am so glad there were no serious injuries and it was a good lesson that even in Boulder, I have to watch dogs carefully before I let mine offleash. . .

oh my gosh that is scary- poor Chum she just can't catch a break!

I wonder if those dogs are usually friendly and this guy didn't expect that to happen?
Oh my gosh!! After everything poor Chummie has been through, it raised my heartrate even more reading what happened. I'm glad BOTH dogs are okay, and this other dog didn't physically hurt her.

Glad this guy gave you his cell.
She's a tough ol' bird, that girl! I'm glad she came through ok. I know it seems like the least of the issues, but at least the guy was concerned. There's nothing worse than an incident like that with some jerk.

That was the impression I got from how friendly the guy was, but I have never seen such ferocity in a dog before, except maybe the pit that attacked Mandy's Carl. This dog was like a mountain lion -- it seemed like he wanted to kill her. Of course, the dog could have punctured her and didn't so that is something I guess. Unlike the pit, this owner seemed to know exactly how to subdue his dog -- which was great -- but it makes me wonder whether he's had practice.
OMG, OMG, OMG, Val! 8O My heart was in my throat when I read this! Poor Chum! The fear and pain she must have felt, I felt right along with her. And the fear and panic that YOU felt, I felt right along with you. Shades of the Philly dog park were ringing in my head the whole time.

I'm so glad there were no puncture wounds, but I hope it didn't do anything to twist or hurt her neck/upper spine. Maybe you should have her checked out, just in case. Agreed, Metacam is great stuff.

Have you called this guy yet? To his credit, he was able to get his dog off Chum and hold him down, but I wonder if he knows his dog has this sort of temperament. You said this was in a playground. I can only hope he doesn't take his dogs there when kids are around. What type of dogs were they?

OMG, OMG, OMG!!! :ghug:
I hope Chum is feeling OK. Poor girl!
I hope she has no punctures or other physical injuries. :(

How scary.
How terrible!
Thankfully she is ok

I haven't yet but I want to for all of those reasons. There are often kids playing there on the swingsets, jungle gym, etc. It is the playground attached to the former elementary school (recently closed due to consolidation in the school system).

One of the dogs looked like a female doberman. The other dog was a large, brown, very strong looking dog, larger and taller than both of mine. I am not sure what the breed was. He looked very tough but then he was playing a game of fetch and his owner seemed friendly . . . so I didn't expect the sudden attack.

In all fairness, I have tons of practice in subduing Bear like this-- not because he's mean, but because he's huge and can be rambunctious to the point where it scares other dogs. He's never vicious but he's heavy and he likes to swat so I can understand a dog not liking being pinned down and slapped in the face by my doofus. I'm not sure how you untrain slapping...
Wow, scary! I'm glad Chum is ok though... poor old girl.
poor chummie! glad she is okay....another thing did come to mind though, and i dont know how accurate it is .... what if the other dog sensed that Chummie wasnt strong?

Its no excuse for that behavior at a playgorund, but it could make sense....

give her a kiss from me!
POOR CHUMMIE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Just goes to show, dogs are animals and you do need to watch. I am glad the owner was responsive. Chances are he didn't even expect that response.
Oh gosh! I'm glad everyone is ok!
Oh God Val.. how AWFUL.... I hope Chum is okay.... that is so scary...
Poor Chum and poor you Val, I hope Chum is fine, give her a :ghug: from Dutch and I :D
How Scary! I hope she's okay. :ghug:
Wow.

I hope all is OK. What a scary thing.
Oh Chummie........ I hope you are OK today and not in pain.

Fortunately dogs get over these emotional traumas faster than we do.
Oh how scary for you and Chummie. I am so glad she is ok. After all you ahve been through with her you certainly dont need this. So so sorry this happened.
Chum is her usual cheerful self today but she does seem a bit more stiff and sore than she had been lately. Thanks for everyone's well wishes. I was really traumatized by it. Much more so than even when she slid down that embankment after sheepiepalooza. Her life flashed before my eyes. . . (well, the part I've shared of it anyway).
OH VAL! What a horrible thing to happen. I read this post earlier today - and since then my thoughts have been with you and Chummie. ( and Maggie too of course) How scared you must have been. Poor - Poor Chummie- the last thing she needed was to be thrown to the ground like that. Bless her heart- I just can't stand to think of our hero hurt or scared. I do hope she is getting around ok. Hugs to all of you :ghug:

Lori
Val, how awful for you and Chummie and Maggie. The element of surprise makes it even worse because except for Maggie starting to back away you had no warning.

I think you should contact that man and see if he has had other incidents. You can usually get a feel when someone is covering up something. But I can't imagine he would give you his cell phone if was unwilling to take responsibility for his dogs actions.

Give Chummie a hug from us. Sweet thing she has been through a lot in her life.
HUGE Cuddles for Chum, gawd how scary, I am so glad she was not seriously injured. Hope her back is OK today and the stiffening up has settled, thank goodness too for a hairy neck that might of helped there from the dogs teeth penetrating her neck.

That was definately a vicious attack and a fairdinkum one too, to go at her like that and flip her by the neck with its jaws I would say this dog has done it before. I would contact the owner of these dogs with lots of questions and if no response, well report the attack. It could be a kid next time.

Maggies senses where kicking in big time there with her backing away

Val hugs I can't imagine how you are feeling today, but I imagine the nightmare happening after all that happened going on in your head. Thank god both girls were not severly mauled by this dog and hopefully it will not change Chummies loving, smiling and trusting nature with what happened to her. :(
Val, I'm beginning to wonder about that black cloud hanging over you, LOLOL First Chum's injury and surgery, your broken leg and then that embankment on the way home from Sheepiepalooza. I'm really glad that Chum seems ok but I agree with taking her to the Vet just to get checked. I also think I would report this just in case its happened before. I can't imagine how scared you were when this happened. I know how nervous I get when a strange dog approaches mine at the dog park, I hold my breath while they check each other out. Hopefully that black cloud will move on soon...Pam
Sorry to hear about this. Hope she's okay.
Poor Chummie. She seems to have the worst luck here lately at parks. Val, I hope she is okay and you are okay as well. I know that had to be very frightening for you to witness.
Holy cow! :cow: My heart was racing and I held my breath while reading your post, as fast as I could read, I might add, hoping to get to the part where Chumley wasn't hurt. Oh my word. Even now I've got tears forming in my eyes. I would have been so stunned by that behavior.

Poor girl. That's the very last thing she needed. Thank God she's acting okay and seems to be feeling okay now. I know you had to have been seriously scared to death, Val. I would have been.

I agree, talking to the guy is a good idea. It seems so strange that he wouldn't have warned you away if he had had any idea something like that would happen. :?

How frightful. 8O Please hug Chumley for me, too. :ghug:
I am so glad to hear that Chummie seems to be fine. Hope all checks out at the vet. Hope that you are doing okay too. That had to be very scary.

Becky & Miley
Wow - tooo scary. I'm so glad she is moving around OK and I hope she bounces back quickly. With everything she's been through this was a very scary experience.
Val how is chummie today?

She seems good. Still a bit stiff but her spine is not overly-reactive / flinching. She was very clear that she wanted some massage today and she even tolerated some stretching of her hips. She doesn't seem fearful or different while on walks, which is good.

I do think I need to exercise more judgment about when I let her go offleash because maybe she is a target for big, strong (mean!!) dogs. It was really odd to see Maggie's reaction to the dog. It was almost like she was backing away from a Bear. But the instant she was doing that, he was already attacking Chumley.

I know I should, but I have not called the guy. I do plan to but I kind of dread it.
