Blood in urine

Hello.

I am new to this site but I am glad I found it.

I have a 11 year old OES. He has had two bouts now of blood in or after he urinates. The vet has prescribed antibiotics. It clears up but then comes back.

Does anyone have any advice?

Is the vet doing cultures or going by what he sees in the microscope?

The first thing that comes to mind is possibly another antibiotic (resistant to the previous ones).
Another thought is that chronic or longterm infections require a much longer course of antibiotics than an acute or sudden infection.

Poor baby. And poor you!
Is your dog neutered? We did not neuter our dog for several years, and he had (sorry to be graphic) enormous testicles. He started bleeding like that when he was about 4 or 5. Now this part is up for debate because my husband and I remember it differently. I recall that the enlarged testicles put a tremendous amount of pressure on his prostate which caused the bleeding, and my husband remembers that he had an abcess on one of the testicles which caused the bleeding. Either way, it was all fixed just by having him neutered.

Hope it's something as simple as that for your guy.
Hi Aimee welcome to the forum, has the vet run any sort of blood test if this problem has re-occured? Being 11 there could be a problem with the Kidneys, liver etc, due to the age factor, they do a simple blood test to screen for any problems there and to rule out any problems there causing blood in the urine.

Also if un-neutered a prostrate problem in an older dog is not uncommon and that needs to be checked too.

Hopefully it is just a UTI problem that just needs a longer course of anti-biotics to fix the problem. :D
Hello.

I took my baby, Einstein, to the vet yesterday. He did extract a clean urine sample for culturing (apparently this will take 10 to 12 days for final results). He did xrays of the bladder and found a large stone (about the size of a quarter) in the bladder itself and a smaller pea sized one at the tip of Einstein's uretha. He put him on Clavamox and Rimadyl.

When we got home last nite (after he was there pretty much all day), Einstein just collapsed at the entrance of our house and kept panting. My husband and I carried him up the stairs but his breathing has been heavy all nite. It lightens up but is never normal. Is it possible the extracting of the urine could be causing this?
I don't know... I just wanted to send you and Einstein hugs. :( :(

They gotta hurt a lot....
Yes, Einstein is neutered.
My parents'/my shih tzu has had bladder stones (or kidney stones-- can't remember which), and it's the same symptoms you're describing.

Yes, she did the weakness/panting thing and had blood in the urine. She was very sick (did nothing but lay around, didn't want to eat) and had to have surgery-- which is what may happen to your dog. I think surgery is required in most cases, but I"m not a vet, so I can't tell you any more than what happened for us. With Molly, she had to be on a special diet afterward (science diet prescription) and NO table food. My dad didn't comply with the no people food, and she ended up having to have a second surgery a couple of years down the road. Since then, though, she's only eaten her own food, and she's done fine for three years.

I hope your dog starts feeling better soon-- it's awful to have to watch them go through pain.
I would call your vet and tell them about the symptoms you had with Einstein when you came home. Could be the pain from the stone, or maybe the stress from the office visit, or if they already had given a dose of Clavamox/Rimadyl it could be a side effect.

Poor guy, hope he feels better soon.
Well, my boy is not doing well. After he spent all Tuesday pretty much in the same general position, we carried him outside (we have wood floors and they can be slippery) and tried to see if he would stand up. He did and walked a little bit but then started to act as if he was going to throw up (heaving) and was very wobbling and collapsed again. We took him to the emergency vet and he is not well. He has pneumonia and they say he has very large cystic mass in his liver. Initially they thought based on the xrays it was in the spleen but the ultrasound shows it is in the liver. Right now, surgery is not an option because of the pneumonia which seems to be getting worse. He is on two antibiotics and getting nebulizer treatments. I just want him to get better.
Positive thoughts and prayers.
It is so hard to have an ill baby.
Best wishes to you both Aimee and Einstein. :ghug:
I'm sorry to hear that Einstein is not doing well. Please know that we're all pulling for him to get through.
Einstein is doing better. The hospital has taken three xrays now ... the first diagnosed the pneumonia and noted the mass, the second on Thursday showed worsening pneumonia but the third on Sat showed the pneumonia was getting better. He is definetely feeling better and much more "chipper" .. getting up on his own but he fatigues easily and gets winded from walking into to see us in the visiting room. We are hopeful he will be well enough for surgery Tuesday or Weds.
I'm so sorry for what Einstein is going through, best wishes to you both
Sending you and Einstein lots of hugs, hope he is well enough for surgery to remove the mass and praying it is Benign when it finally is removed.

:ghug:
Get better soon, Einstein!
I just got back from the vet. Einstein can go to surgery but they are telling me that even with the surgery he likely only has a month or so more with us and with what they know now, there is a greater than 50 percent chance, they'd call us during surgery and ask if we want to put him to sleep because it is so bad. I don't know what to do. He is so perky when I visit and I want to give him every chance but I also don't want him to go by himself. I certainly haven't spent a lot of time thinking about the end until recently but I always thought I'd be able to hold him and he could smell us and have us comforting him right up until the end. I just don't know what to do.
I know this is a very difficult time for you...I will pray for you and Einstein. Please know we are all here for you....I hope Einstein gets better.

Strength,
So sorry to hear that Einstein is not feeling well. The only advice I can give you is to follow what your heart tells you. I know when I had to make that tough decision to let my Roxy go 11 days ago...I did what I felt in my heart. She too had a couple of good days...but I could feel deep down into the core of my heart she wasn't going to get better....no matter what I did. I will keep you and Einstein in my prayers. Please keep us posted.
