hitting

Otis has an issue with hitting us with his paw. It is a daily occurence and it hurts! I know that he wants attention and I give him a lot of it. I don't want him to feel that he can "demand" attention like that. Any suggestions?

my advice stunk.
Any attention - negative or positive - is what they are looking for - don't give him any attention when he does this - you could even get up and walk away.

or

Tell him "Off" or "No Paw" and when he puts it down - say "Good Boy" and reward him with praise and a treat. Rewarding him and giving him attention only then.

Brittney does the same thing - and you are right - it HURTS! I vowed never to teach another one of my dogs to give their paw (or shake) again!
It's also dangerous around children - they are often at face level with their paw and can scratch pretty bad.

Good Luck - I hope you do better at breaking the habit than I did!

We tried "No Paw" for 10 years with Jake, and it never succeeded.

Of course, 75% of the time that he "pawed", Joan rubbed him. I only rubbed him 74% of the time, so I'm less to blame.
My sister taught Mollie how to HI FIVE! The little girl next door got a big five in the face! She OK! :D So, we don't hi five around children anymore.

When a Sheepie wants to please you it's full force (all 80 lbs of her). Also we both can't come down the stairs at the same time :) I'm learning all this as I go.

It didn't work for me either Ron! Once Brittney came to us - it was far too late! This is one of the reasons I didn't teach Presley & Sydney how to give their paws! It's cute when they're little pups - but when they are full grown and wack ya' with that paw - NOT FUN!
You can teach them to be gentle though... let them know it hurts, and say be gentle, I'm not sure if it would work with every dog, but it has worked with a few of mine over the years..... it just lessens the intensity and excitement with which they fling that paw up!
mickey when he wants attention he simply jumps in my lap like he is a 10lb puppy!!!i do however know it is my fault, because when he was younger and smaller(alot smaller)i would hold him on my lap and rub his belly hold him like a baby and cuddle w/ him,and of course i still do,however when people come over and he EXPECTS this treatment from everyone who sits on the couch it gets a bit embarassing  .i know i need to crack down on him w/ disipline but im so soft hearted, hell i have a hard time punishing my 8yr daughter  .

anyone else having any humping issues from your male puppies?mickey humps kids,my friends everyone except me.i am going to get him neutured so hopefully that will stop him.but do any of yours hump alot?
My pup Sky humps a lot too, legs, Dancer, whatever, and she is a girl! And only ten weeks old! I was very surprised by this behaviour, but I know it means she is trying to assert herself as alpha dog, and we're going to try to make sure it goes no further!
Drake has learned to use his paws pretty much like we use our hands. When we leave the door slightly adjar going downstairs Drake will very softly bounce the door back with his nose so he can get his paw inbetween the door and wall to open it. He also uses his paw to grab our ankles to keep us from going were we want to go.. We have a humping issue also that is getting better but Drake is so big that he actually can give you a bear hug while trying to hump and again he uses his paws to grap onto you much like hands. I have found that a very persistant down is helping to control this. He is getting much better and I can see persistance pays off. 8)
My folks dog JulieAnna humps her dog pal Liam just about every time they play. We call her humpty dumpty  But, this is always at the end of a play session, and it's her way of telling him- "Hey, I'm the big wig here". She has never humped a human. If you have an adult dog that's been fixed, and you have issues with them humping humans in the family, you may have some dominance issues... If it's dog to dog, it really more of a communication thing, with spayed and neutered animals :)
Chelsea is a 'hitter', and she hits hard sometimes, often she will 'paw' at one of us and then extend her claws, leaving a mark. I've been 'catching' her paw when I can and gently holding on to it, she wants it back and gets uncomfortable, eventually she licks my hand to let her go, she doesn't 'hit' again after that for a while. It's just unpleasant enough that it makes her think. However, that said, she forgets about it and comes on back soon enough with the paw. I think she will eventually stop this behavior if we are persistent.

Does anyone else's dog 'curl' their paws to grab a hold of something? I saw someone said ankles above, and I've had two Sheepies now that 'cup' their paw like a hand to get a hold of something. Many moons ago someone told me that they had an extra joint or bone or something that made them more able to do this than other dogs- anybody know?

Also- on the humping front- Chelsea does NOT like to be humped at the dog park, she makes a face and pins her ears back. She only humps on occasion, ususally a pillow or a stuffed animal.

At Christmas my mother bought her a little squeaky animal in the shape of a ram, it was black and white, and sort of looked like a little OES puppy, Chelsea was only a puppy herself, she LOVED that present, she ran through the house with Randall ( as we dubbed him) for about twenty minutes, then she brought him into the living room where we were all gathered opening presents, she spit him out on the floor and proceeded to hump him like crazy, then she laid down, grabbed a hold of his horns and ripped his head off. Yep, that was the end of Randall (#1- there were more). I think it's a good thing we are not planning to 'mate' her.

Up.
Henry does the sheepie dance when it is time for breakfast and dinner and then I make him lay on his bed waiting for me to get his food and fresh water. When the dance is done and he has thrown himself on his bed he puts both paws around my ankles "holding" on to me. Through lots of repetition and negative conditioning (ankles scratched raw) I have finally learned either to stand far enough away that he can't reach me or to wear pants and socks. Henry's upright isn't too bright.
LMAO!!!

mickey does a dance of love for food also!!
he also does a dance when he comes out of his kennel, kind of bounces and spins in a circle...of course it is the cutest thing since my 2legged daughter started walking!!hehe!! :D
Our 7 month old Dexter doesnt listen when we tell him to leave his 11 year old poodle brother alone, whom looks alot like a sheep. Was wondering how we can stop dexter from hearding him around the house? any one have any ideas?
I had a few good chuckles reading a few of these posts (and I really needed it today)! Maddie has a habit of "pawing" us - me more so than my husband and I have the bruises to prove it ;) Yesterday, she got me good and managed to paw/scratch my leg while we were playing. I have a bruised scratchmark that stretches from the middle of my thigh to just above my knee. She's one rambunctious big bumble who really doesn't know her own strength. I've been working with her to try and curtail some of this enthusiasm and it's slowly working. All of you have been so incredibly helpful to this sheepie newbie. Hopefully, I will be able to post a picture of Maddie soon ;) Thanks again everyone. Have a nice Labor Day.
LOL It will get better! I hope! LOL Mopsey has developed a new habbit besides hitting and pawing at me. She also does it more to me, then hubby. Hmmm She now sitts on the couch next to me, and puts her paw on my shoulder! Just sitts there hugging me. LOL She is such a little dorkle!
Sheepies are so incredibly entertaining ;) One of Maddie's little funny pawing stunts actually involves her coming into our bedroom in the morning, coming over to my side of the bed and then placing her big old paw on my arm gently. Once she knows I am awake (and begin to pet her), she will do the funniest thing - she'll take her other paw and then hold my arms w/ both of her paws. It's kind of hard to explain but she will literally be sitting beside our bed like a little person. Her bum is on the floor, then she sits upright and then holds both her bumble paws on me (or my husband). It's hillarious but we have yet to get a picture. As soon as one of us moves, she's off to investigate. Sheepies truly are the "clowns of the dog world." :D
