One of our rescue dogs is missing :(

One of our rescue dogs, Chip, dug under the fence in his foster home this afternoon and took off. He is a beagle/basset hound and he is very very nervous around people (he came from a farm where he was being shot at because the farmer didn't want the dogs anymore....)

We're all just sick to our stomachs worried about Chip. He has tags and he's microchipped, but the place he was lost is a rural suburb and he is scared of people so I'm worried he will hide in the forest preserves.

The worst part is that we have a huge adoption event tomorrow so none of us can go looking for him. His foster parents are out right now searching for him and hopefully some flyering will get done tomorrow.

*sigh* Cross your fingers for Chip

We had one of our rescue's bassets lost outside this winter for WEEKS. It was up in the St Paul/Mpls area. He was a very timid puppy mill stud boy, who was afraid of people d/t very little human contact in his life. :(

He finally was live trapped by a family who's yard he had been visiting. He was in good shape - he had been eating the food put out, then running away.

Best wishes in your efforts to get him back. Being lost is scary!
I hope he turns up soon and okay.
Fingers crossed!
Poor Chip, I hope he turns up!!!
Oh the poor boy! I hope he is found soon....I know what its like to lose a dog....so my heart goes out to his foster mom....pretty scary
The foster parents are actually being a little too nonchalant about it. They quit looking for him at 10 last night because it was "dark". Thankfully one of the women who works for the rescue wasn't afraid to tell them to get their butts back out there with some flashlights. They have absolutely no sense of urgency about this which is pretty scary since we are relying on them today.

Dawn I can't imagine having a dog missing for weeks!! I guess these little guys are tougher than we give them credit for sometimes. We do have lots of coyotes around here though, so I'm hoping he will get hungry sooner than later and wander back by people. :(
That would be terrifying. It would be awful to have any dog go missing, but especially one who is afraid of help. . .
Best of luck in finding him and my parayers are for his safe return
Oh NO! 8O

Any word, Heather? Has he been found?? :(
Poor Chip! I hope you are found soon.

And dare I say that I think I would remove the family from the foster list. Accidents can happen, but their attitude!
He's still missing :(

Apparently some neighbors saw him run away and they chased after him (not knowing how timid he is) and they saw him swim across a marsh into a wooded area. We had people searching there for a few hours with no luck.

Today a wonderful woman who saw our Craigslist ad is bringing her tracker Coonhound to the area to see if he can track Chip down. Apparently he has found dogs before, so we are keeping our fingers crossed!
That would be so cool if the dog found the dog!

Did you guys know he was a digger? Or did the foster parents? I guess I'm just surprised that they'd let a dog that they didn't know very well outside unattended. Regardless of how it happened, I just hope he's found!
Don't give up hope. I just read in our local newspaper that a woman from a neighboring area had found her dog after he had been missing for two years.
According to the paper, she got a call on Memorial Day from a man who lived about four miles from her home. He found the dog in his garage. The dog was still wearing the collar the woman had on him when he went missing with a 2003 dog license and a 2005 rabies tag attached to it. Seems like the dog survived on his own for the whole time. Except for contracting lyme disease, being infested with ticks and some weight loss, the dog was otherwise in somewhat good health.
Good luck with the Coonhound. I hope it works.
Fingers crossed!!!!
Poor little guy I sure hope someone spots him or the coon dog can track him down. That is wonderful that that woman volunteered her services. Fingers Crossed

Incredible story!

I'm hoping for the best. . .
Last night the foster mom took her beagle out and had him bark in the area Chip was seen running to.... and they heard him bark back!! They weren't able to catch him, but the coonhound is going out tonight with some volunteers so we at least know the general area that he's in.

We're all really optimistic that we'll get him tonight- so keep your fingers crossed for us!
Thats great news! Keep us informed.

Seeing as you know where he is the best thing to do would be to set up a trap. You can borrow one for the local Anuimal Control. And use Kentucky Fried Chicken as bait. Guarenteed to lure him in!

Good luck!
I really hadn't thought of a trap... I guess my worry is that there are a lot of coyotes around there, and I really don't want to catch one of those!

Should we give it a try anyway?
What an intriguing story. I hope it has a good ending. Please keep us posted.
That's got to be encouraging that they heard him bark! Good luck tonight, and keep us posted!

I would give it a whirl. Check the trap every few hours during the day, and set it up in the shade.
We did catch a raccoon, once, and it was in there for hours in the heat...It did not survive..

If there are a lot of coyotes out there, they may get your pooch before you do!!! If you catch a coyote you can always let him out....or ask animal control to come out and do it.

Traps are VERY successful, but only if you know where he is hanging out...Which you do...Good luck!
I second the trap idea too. When our cat went missing we caught possums, raccoons, other people's cats, etc. and when I released the trap they just went running, no matter how angry or scared they were.

I hope you find him soon!
No luck with the tracking dog... although he did find what we think is Henry's pawprints, dog poop in the woods, and we did hear him bark we just could not locate him!

We're going back Saturday and we will be setting a trap and hopefully bringing the tracking dog back with us.
We had a cat once that went missing for two weeks - we thought we could hear him but could never find him - when my neighbor went to get his lawnmower out of his shed - he came running out - he was in the locked shed the whole time - maybe since you can hear the dog - he might be in a place that he can't come out of -
just a thought.
Since he's a rescue I'm assuming he's been fixed, BUT if not, do you know anyone with a female in heat that might lure him back home?
I hope he's found soon!
