What did you do with your dog when you moved?

How were your dogs when you moved to a new house? Did they adjust pretty quickly on their own, did they need some encouragement, did they notice they weren't at the old place?

We're moving soon and it's Barney's first move, so I'm a little worried.

As long as our animals were WITH us, they seemed to adjust just fine. My cat stresses over EVERYTHING, not to mention she had to travel 8hrs a day for more than a WEEK in a car without her favorite person in the world (me) ....but she also did fine. We moved into a bigger place, so how could they not be happy there was more room to run and play :D

Are you posting pics of the new house?????
For us, it was no big deal at all. Lucy seemed to enjoy the excitement. :)
Most dogs are fine with moving, they are attached to their people not their home so much. Cats on the other hand are attached to their homes and don't take change very well a lot of the time.
Well, we have to move into an apartment temporarily, which is MUCH smaller and has MANY more stairs AND no backyard so we'll have to walk Barns to do his business, so it'll be interesting.

I'll post pics of the new house when it is more than just concrete and some wooden posts :D
Our first big move, when we moved to a different state, was with Pearl the cat and she did just fine. The second move we had adopted both Violet and China and still have Pearl and they all did real well moving into the new house.
We have moved twice with dogs....both times it was a non issue. They didn't care as long as they had their crates.

So, you're building then?? :excited: How exciting! I vote for progress pics as it goes up! :D
I'm with Willowsprite. Dogs do much better than cats during a move.

We moved last summer, and Oscar handled everything well. For the first couple of days at the new house, when I would take him for a walk, he would stop and sit next to my car door, as if to say, "Hey, when are we going back home?". He got over that quickly, and we settled into a routine, no problem.

The only issue was the pre-move chaos, with packed boxes stacked up everywhere. Oscar does not like things moved around, or things where they do not belong.......just like me! 8) Gee, do you think he was picking up on my vibe???? :lmt: I HATE MOVING!!!!!!!

Laurie and Oscar
No big deal as long as mom and dad are there, they don't care and settle in well. Barney will be fine :D
Norman was the only one that we had when we moved and he walked in the door and just kicked back like he had been here all along.

Also, while we were moving, everybody kept calling him Tiger because we moved into a place that looks like the Brady Bunch house!
How exciting, Steph! So you guys are staying put in the area for a while then. I can't wait to see progress pictures!

Annie didn't show any signs of the anxiety that I felt when we moved :D We showed her the bowls, the yard, where the car was parked...
Well, we took Barns and the cats over to the apartment yesterday afternoon while our current house had its inspection. The ride over was hilarious. I had Barney in the back of the car and the 3 cats in their cases in the middle row of the car. And they meowed the entire time. All in different pitches. It cracked me up--people must have thought I was crazy just laughing away...

So we get there and besides not initially wanting to get out of the car (he likes to be lifted gently to the ground (his dad can do that, me, not so much). So I stood there in 90 degree heat for like 10 minutes and said Come on Barney a million times and pulled and he just clamped down. Finally daddy came to lift him out

And he seems to like the new place. Just roamed around and explored and basically just made himself at him. One bad thing is the kitchen is much smaller and that's where he'll stay when we're not home...but I guess that's not too bad.

I'll post pics of our new house during various staging of construction. Yesterday they had part of the roof framed and sitting on the ground waiting to go up! :D
You will be supriased at how quickly he will adjust. I moved here three years ago after spending almost 8 years with Tasker in the same house. I was afraid he would have adjustment issue but he did find. I think having the same furniture provided the "smell of home". He wandered a bit the first couple days but soom found his favorite spot and made himself at home.
We moved many times when our kids were young - in fact my daughter told all of the neighbors we were moving when she was four - ugggh, not that time. I guess she was ready for a new place.

I love to move because they've always been for good reasons. I guess the kids and pets pick up on the vibes because it has always worked out well.

And it is a great time to toss out stuff you don't need - and find things you thought were lost. We are hoping to sell our home next year and build. We built our first house and it was fun. My job this summer is to get things don around here so the house will be ready to sell next spring - and we will be ready to move. One of the attics is done - the big one is left to do. And I am dog sitting my son's rescue during the day, which slows down the things I can do.
we have just moved right across the atlantic from england to florida with einy and hes settled in like hes always lived here so don't worry all will be well

Yes.

We're moving about 6 miles away from our current house. Since we'll be out here for a few years, we figured we should get a bigger house so we can be a little more competitive in the CA market when we get to move home.
I know you're disappointed, but I hope building a new house will help cheer you up. :D

I think it's a good idea to move into a bigger place, too. The difference in the housing market is unreal between southern CA and VA. 8O
I watch those shows on HGTV about the comparative values between different areas of the country, it's always amazing to me how different it can be.
