Food For Weight Gain

Yesterday, I had Fred shaved and it made me realize that he is on the slender side. (I will post some pictures later) He is going to be a year old on the 16th. He is spritely, constantly on the go and an all around hyper fellow. We also live in a house that is three levels and he races up and down the stairs following me. He gets a tremendous amount of excercise outside and in the house. My husband remarked that he has the physique of a greyhound.

He has been eating Nutro Ultra Large Breed Puppy Food. I switched from Eukenuba about two months ago. He really needs to put on some weight and keep it on. Could anyone recommend ways to bulk him up? What are the foods that are best for putting on weight?

I have tried supplementing meats from the table into his diet but, everytime I do he has an upset stomach. I am concerned that Fred is too thin and to an outsider it looks like I am not feeding my furry baby enough.

When our shaggy dogs are shaved down they all look skinny. You should be able to feel his ribs when you run your hands down his sides.

Dogs, especially large breeds, are best kept a bit on the thin side. Even with our rescue dogs that are emaciated we don't intentionally try to "fatten" them up. They're fed a normal diet of a good quality food on a regular schedule until they fill out slowly.

If you have any doubts about Fred's weight, please consult your vet. He/she may want to also check for for worms 8O (yes, it happens).

He could just be fine the way he is.
This is what our Ollie looked like his whole life. He is about 6 yrs old in this picture. He also was very active and athletic.

My opinion is that I would not TRY to put weight on him unless your vet has said he needs too. A slender dog is a much healthier dog, especially when it comes to hips and joints. At one year he is still a "puppy" and as such likely to be quite active. As he gets older and starts to slow down he will most likely fill out and you won't want him to have extra weight.

I would discuss it with your Vet. You should be able to feel ribs but not see them. As stated above, he may have worms (take a fecal to be checked) and all the food in the world won't help if he does.

Putting on weight is a matter of using a nutrient dense food, again I'd go with your Vet's recommendation.
Want me to have Clyde give him a call and give him some tips? He seems to have no problem packing it on.
Thin is great for a dog!

He should have a nice tuck, up behind the ribs!
